Before we finish, let's talk about the big news of the Weekend England 2-3 Spain. Speaking of the game, there was a very special player, that we enjoyed very much. We enjoyed him enough to make him our EA Sports FC 27 star of the week, Kai. Who is it? Yes, it is Anthony Gordon. He is the man. He's the possessor of some lovely hair and also some lovely feet and his feet have been doing a lot of good stuff. This season, but there were some questions about him going into this season. So he got a big move to Barcelona over the summer. And I think a lot of people looked at that maybe from the outside and questioned why Barcelona were going for him. I thought it was weird. Yeah, particularly when there was a seemingly easy deal to do with Marcus Rashford, potentially joining. But he had a difficult season in the Premier League last season went sort of quite a few long periods without scoring goals. But where he was really good was the Champions League. And the difference obviously between the Premier League last season and the Champions League is there's a lot more space for a player like Anthony Gordon to run into and be a lot more devastating and big spaces. And I think when you see La Liga and you see the way Barcelona have played and how devastating they are in the counter attack, it's actually kind of a marriage made in heaven in a way. Because Anthony Gordon suits that style down to the ground. And he started off really, really well. So he's already got five assists in his opening six games with Barcelona. He's linking it really well with Raffinia. He's a nice sort of alternative threat to Luminium Marl as well. But for England, he was superb as well. He scored a really nice goal on the counter attack. Again, in those big spaces, linked up really well with Harry Kane. So yeah, he's having a really good time of things at the minute. Well, I'm picking him as my star of the week. How about this? Now, reading from Tom Harris' matchpiece, which was shared as a byline with other people. But I won't mention them to bring you up on the table. I do have my own separate matchpiece. That was just right on me. Really? Yes. I didn't like that one that much. I prefer the one with other people. I've included stuff. Fine. Both were very good. Here it goes. Now, you'll tell me afterwards if you actually wrote this bit or no. Spain beat England 3-2 and a highly entertaining, and no, you didn't like that. I knew what they knew you didn't. Spain, but who do you think wrote this? I think probably the editor who's on the game. Right. They don't get byline today. Good old Duncan. Spain beat England 3-2 and a highly entertaining and open nation's league game. At Wembley. I read that really weird. With the World Cup winners extending their record, unbeaten run to 39 games. Thomas Tuckle's side had the visitors rattled for the middle period of the game. I like the middle period. And could have gone 3-1 up. Had Harry Kane not missed a second half penalty. Tom, you were there. I was. At Wembley. You were at Wembley. Tell us what it was like at Wembley. Tell us about the game. It was good. It was a really entertaining game. And as we've just spoken about a nice break from the kind of thing that I've been going on in my kind of football experience in that couple of days. Yeah, it was good. I thought England were, they were quite aggressive against Spain. They pressed really high, which I thought was quite encouraging to see. Yeah. It did mean that they were caught flat-footed and with space in behind relatively often. I mean, they could have been 2-3 now down in the opening kind of 10 minutes. Right. But I think when we're talking about England, you know, there's been a lot of kind of narrative about how they should play. The Anthony Gordon's come out and said that England should play, you know, with physicality and counter-attacking and not try and replicate Spain, for example. Yeah. And I think, I agree with that. And I think what we have to do as kind of English football fans is accept that when you play like that, you're just prone to more variance, right? Yeah. You're going to press high, you're going to take your chances, you're going to go man-for-man, try and win your jewels, you're going to give Bellingham and Gordon and all of those players the kind of facility, you know, the ability to counter-attack. You're going to leave yourself open the other way. And I think you almost have to forget about results, which is quite difficult, especially in international football, where it is so results-driven. And I think this was, yeah, a disappointing result because they lost. They were ahead. But the kind of process, I think, was right about how England should be approached in kind of games, if that makes sense. Well, I was going to ask you also, I mean Thomas Tookle's reputation took a big hit based on the way the manner in which England fell out of the World Cup. Yeah. Sounds like this is maybe, you know, some steps towards rebooting that somehow. I think so. Yeah, I think so. And again, the Argentina game, because it was so kind of jarring the change of style, then that's why I think it gained the reaction that it did. Kind of shaking his head with disappointment. Still angry. Still angry? Yeah, I'm somewhat over it. Tooki tooki. Tooki tooki. Yeah. But no, I think this was, yeah, it was better. But I think ultimately, at the top of this, you know, the international game, you're going to come up against teams who can just come up with moments of magic and have a very, very strong playing identity like Spain do. Okay. So I don't think it was a disaster. It was frustrating. But, you know, you have to take your hats off to Spain again, because, I mean, it's unbelievable. They've not lost a game in 90 minutes. Right. For like nearly three years, I think, which is ridiculous. Incredible. And yeah, the subs changed the game in a second half. The Spain, I think, Luis Delafuente was very clever in how he did it. I think in the first half, it's a bit of a narrative in Spain, at the moment, where, you know, when they won Euro 2024, they played with Nico Williams in Lemniumal, and they were a little bit more kind of transitional and looking for pace and moments of individual kind of magic. But then when the World Cup woke up, this summer came around, it was more about the collective. And you see, for example, Williams was no longer playing. It was Alex Baiano would come in. And he was a winger, but he would basically drop into midfield, and then they'd start playing. Yeah. And that's what happened in the second half. They took Williams off. Baiano came on. They brought Pedri on. That's when the game changed, because then they... Incredible. I know you like Luis Delafuente, but saying, well, he brought Pedri on, and therefore it was success. No, of course. I feel like that's cheating somewhat. I think it shows the two sides, that's, well, one side that Spain did have. You know, Euro 2024 version. And now this, where it is just so good, you can't get the ball off at times. And someone like Baiano... Well, you wrote your match piece about him. Yeah. I don't really know who he wants to be honest with, but you could just tell listeners. Yeah, so he came through VRL. Right. He was very good three seasons ago. I think he got 14 or 15 assists in La Liga for VRL. Right. He went to Atlético Madrid. It didn't quite take off for him, because he didn't quite fit into the kind of system. But he is a very kind of aggressive, scrappy, out-of-possession player, which I think also helps with Spain to control the game. Right. Because he's another player. When the ball is lost, he's just going to try and win it straight back again. That's one of the reasons why Spain is so good, right? Because they can just... They control possession. And then the second they lose it, they win it back and they continue to control the possession. Yeah. Baiano is another player who I think helps with that more so than someone like Nico Williams, who is out-wide and kind of hanging-wide. So I think we'll see a lot more of him at Atlético Madrid this season, Kangin Lee, who they bought as well. There kind of seems to be playing them as two strikers at the moment, without Julian Elvarez. Hmm. Maybe we'll see more of him. But yeah, I think he and his profile... Not only changed the game, but kind of changed the way Spain had been playing. Right. That's kind of two years. Is Julian Elvarez injured or is he not playing? He's... Yeah, he's not really playing. Really is he like on a strike or something, or is it? Yeah. Well, I was in San Sebastian, actually, a couple of weeks ago, and I watched what we put you in. Real sausage adverse to Atlético Madrid, and he was nowhere to be seen. Can I ask you a question? Did you fall asleep on the beach and get sunburned? Yeah. A little bit. Did you? Oh my god, I'm so tired. Now, can I say it? I don't know if you know this. Maybe you'll recall that during the World Cup, Kaya was very badly sunburned, performing the sleep on the beach in San Sebastian, to the extent where his doctor exclaimed about it. Yeah. Kaya then months later, just very recently, you went on holiday again. I did. You again, fell asleep on a sunny beach. Yeah. It happened. I was actually livid about it when he told me that. I had a nice time and I fell asleep. I was relaxed. I'm livid about it. This Tifa work takes it out of here. You need to relax on the beach sometimes. Yeah. It's 180 words script. Yeah. It's hard work. It's hard work. It's so hard. It's tough. Oh, he's slacking me again, asking me if I've done it yet. Anyway, you were telling me before the show started, you're on a new diet. Yeah. What the hell, man? Yeah. Well, you don't understand you don't need to diet. I'm running a marathon in a couple of months. Right. And I was running it last year and I got injured. But I think one of the lessons I took out of it is that I need to prepare a bit of further in advance. Right. I'm on this diet. My girlfriend's got me on it. What did you injured? Was it your stomach? No. It was nothing to do with my diet. Right. But I also do think that I wasn't as prepared as I probably should have been. For a marathon. For a marathon. Okay. So, yeah. My girlfriend's got me on it. It's called Whole 30. Whole 30. Yeah. Is it related to your age? No. It's 30 days. Oh, you just do it for 30 days. It's like an elimination diet. Is it just where you eat whole nuts? You're not allowed to eat things which could be kind of essential allergens or things that you could be intolerant to. Oh. So, like, dairy. You can't eat dairy. You can't eat dairy. You can't eat dairy. You can't eat sugar. Sugar? No. So, okay. Well, peanuts aren't. Okay. But the rest of the nuts, because if you have a peanut allergy, you'll kind of know that you have a peanut allergy. Yeah. I think you would know. Yeah. And you kind of go for 30 days and then after 30 days, you eventually reintroduce these things back. And you see if you feel bad. And you can see kind of what things are making you feel bad. But you consider taking an allergen test. They're only going to look good. Really? Really? Apparently, this is the thing to do. Wow, I'm learning. But I hate it. But can this not be like a placebo effect? You know, you think because you're not having something you feel lighter. Right, totally. The issue is when people start to reintroduce. So, one of the things is legumes. Like beans. Like beans like that. And the issue is that when you start to introduce, you go over top. And you eat too many beans. And then you feel bad because you've had too many beans. Well, I was going to say, I mean, part of, you know, the upkeep of someone, hardcore lifestyle like mine. For example, part of it is just feeling ill. Like, if you want to do it, you have to accept that, you know, part of that is just going to be feeling ill, shortening your lifespan and those sorts of things. It's just what comes with the game. It just comes with the game, boys. But I've had some nuts. I've had some water. Yeah. And I've had a calamari tea. Not some water. Well, good luck with the marathon. I'm sure that's going to go absolutely fine. You can eat meat. But I've just not got around to it yet. Sure, sure. Just before we finish up, Colin. I noted that Anthony Gordon noted the difference in play style between England and Spain to me. Now that he is Spanish, he lives in Spain. He plays football in Spain. That's what that's the equivalent. It was a very fair comment that he made. Yeah, it's really interesting. I think this goes back to the kind of biases of, like, the spin of dominated world football for a sort of second cycle in like a 20-year period, right? Yeah. It's a very consistent style of play, or a basis for a style of play. And I think when you contract with him, and I think when you contract with England, then obviously Anthony Gordon's entire career has always been in English football. There's no shortage of very talented players. And when you look at the sort of academies and the type of players they bring, they're all capable of keeping the ball and playing nice football. But there's a difference here. And I think it goes to the sort of difference between what the Premier League currently is and what LaLiga currently is, whereas LaLiga is all about producing groups of players through a certain system. And a lot of those players will go into the first team together and they'll sort of stay at the same club for years and years or in similar environments. Whereas in the Premier League, obviously, there's a lot more money to spend, so there's a lot of external players coming in and sort of stopping those pathways. But also, there's a lot more pragmatism in the Premier League, right? So there's a lot less definition in how clubs play. And another factor here, and there's been pieces in the athletic recently about this, is the academy wars between all these Premier League clubs. Well, you've got all these England, who've been to the National is really highly weighted and a lot of them are expected to go on to become England and the Nationals. But who are constantly switching between Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool Arsenal, et cetera. There's this constant battle and constant movement that there's no continuity and kind of thought. So it's kind of like there's so much, there's a lot of resources, there's a lot of quality but that continuity doesn't exist. And I think that's sort of driven by the economics of what the Premier League is, whereas in LaLiga, there's a lot more stability. And this is actually it. It's a good contrast between Barcelona and Real Madrid, whereas Real Madrid produce a lot more players who are capable of sort of playing anywhere across the top five leagues. But Barcelona are capable of producing that particular type of player. So Real Madrid have much less of a defined identity, a less defined sort of string that goes through the kind of different areas, whereas Barcelona is is. So that, I think, is really interesting. And also you've got the basket nature as well of what they bring, but Spain has a continuity that has such a clear defined playing culture. And on Saturday night, in that match, you could see it, right, even though you introduced slightly different profiles of player coming on as substitutes. The style is pretty much exactly the same thing, whereas each England substitute is kind of like, well, now we're having to rejig things and players are having to shift over a position or do a different role in the team. And I just think that's the difference. And I don't really, I don't think there's an answer for, at like an international level, I think it's just like an institutional cultural issue, where you kind of do it everything right, but there's just no consistency and continuity and there's a lot of short-termism. And these guys won the Euro's and the World Cup. You know what I'm saying, right? They cannot be countenanced. What a lovely country. Don't fall asleep in it, though. I'm lost.
