World Cup 2026 — Group A
Mexico's home World Cup moment: El Tri host the opening group games in front of 100,000+ at Estadio Azteca. For South Africa and Korea Republic, reaching the knockout rounds starts here.
Group A Teams
| Team | Confederation | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 🇲🇽 Mexico | Host Nation (CONCACAF) | Co-Host Nation 🌮 |
| 🇿🇦 South Africa | CAF | Qualifier |
| 🇰🇷 Korea Republic | AFC | Qualifier |
| ⚽ UEFA Playoff D | Europe | Qualifier |
Key Storylines
Azteca Roars Again
Estadio Azteca hosted the 1970 and 1986 finals. Mexico plays their group games at home — 105,000 fans of pure CONCACAF passion. No team wants to be in Mexico's group.
South Africa Returns
The 2010 hosts qualified through AFCON for only their fourth World Cup. A new generation of South African football — Percy Tau, Ronwen Williams — ready to show African football's progress.
Korea's Golden Generation
Son Heung-min leads a Korean squad with pace and technical quality. Having reached the semis in 2002, Korea know what World Cup magic looks like — they want to recreate it in 2026.
Lozano's Swan Song?
Hirving "Chucky" Lozano is El Tri's all-time leading scorer. For him and veteran midfielder Andres Guardado's generation, this home World Cup is the culmination of their careers.
European Wildcard
UEFA Playoff D (Wales, Finland, Greece, or Kazakhstan) completes Group A. Any European qualifier could upset Mexico's path and make this the tournament's most unpredictable group.
Beyond the Round of 16
Mexico have gone out in the Round of 16 in seven consecutive World Cups (the "quinto partido" curse). 2026 on home soil is their best chance to finally break the hex.
