This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Thanks for joining us. Saturday night football came from North London this week as Spurs played new castle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This is how we saw things at full time. A first Premier League win for Mattias Yeisler's new castle united and an impressive start by the new manager who's gone his first three games unbeaten. Last weekend it was Ilanga and Willek that earned him a point against Liverpool. This weekend it is Ilanga and Whissa who have done the business for Newcastle. There's been a bit of a bad tempered finish because for Spurs this is another poor result that extends their bad record here at home which they failed to make their fortress last season and they've started off on the wrong foot here as well. Two matches in which they've been beaten, two matches in which they failed to score in the Premier League and Newcastle rammed home their advantage with those goals from Ilanga and Whissa with a brilliant bit of improvisation in the second half. An impressive start by Newcastle, Jamie. Yeah, absolutely fantastic. As I said, decimated in the summit a real negative feeling about the place but winning football matches makes you feel completely different. Those supporters cannot believe what they've seen in the last couple of games and they've lost stars. They've always been back for a long time considering what he did in terms of winning actual football maybe. There's some new stars emerging at the club. So Spurs in it for the long haul and have to pick themselves up but all the smiles are on Newcastle faces Tottenham Nile, Newcastle 2. What a result for Spurs for Newcastle I should say, what a second half performance from them, spearheaded by that pace and directness from Anthony Ilanga and Spurs just couldn't handle that attacking threat. Newcastle so impressive, Spurs worrying. Two games in, two defeats, none scored, five conceded but for Newcastle. That is a dream away day, Jamie. Yeah, absolutely fantastic to that. I think the way they set up for minute one, that guy there was a constant threat. They kept playing the ball in behind him, the manager deserves a lot of credit for that because he obviously had a game plan and they exploited Tottenham's weaknesses down that side with Elanga and dead it's they were absolutely brilliant. And I'm so pleased for VISA and I'm so pleased for players that have had a really tough time like Elanga because last year it must have been so difficult for them to have on many times. I made the right move here but today these are the days that makes you think yeah it was worth it. You pay for a huge football club like Newcastle even though they've lost players this club will always survive. And I think today was one of those days when I look back and go what a moment for the bus because there's been a lot of pressure surrounding that club. They're all dancing. They're all dancing and I wonder what Eddie Hound must be thinking watching this. Two of the players that we were told he pushed the boat out to bring two's in James's club last season and just didn't perform for him as soon as he leaves. Nice time to see him. Yeah they obviously had some injuries last season that probably affected that. But I think it just goes to show the type of manager Eddie Alhiz that he's left that club in in a good place. There's some good characters in that change in room and they've looked like they've made some good signings and managers getting more out of other players as well. So positive start for them. I thought they deserved the win today. They're third away with it of 2026. All three have been in London and two have come at the Tottenham Hot Spurs stadium. Another big step back. Jamie for Spurs today. Yeah but I said it last week and I said the same thing again. This is going to take time. There's a lot of new players all coming in and the manager's got a jigsaw puzzle and he's got to figure out how do I fit these players in. What's going to be the best system? What's my best free in midfield? I've got the right wide men. It was going to be my number 10. So there are going to be a few team and problems. I will also say that I look at the senior players there and I think Mickey Van der Ven is an example leading. I don't know if he did enough in that respect to that if he was certainly in the goals. So there's even some of the players that have been a long while they can do better. That's not good enough today even though they can give that excuse but for Lucas's point of view, fantastic. It certainly was and another key player for Matthias Jacek today was JLM Vincent who looks like a player reborn, doesn't he? Here he is right now with Patrick Davison. You know Johan, I don't know if people at home saw it but you've just been in the new class of fans who you've been to see. Yeah, I've been to some of my family. I work on my son because they drop it all the way to from Caso to be here. So yeah, I'm very happy, you know, part of the team, part of the club and now I'm part of the club. I'm just looking at that away end. It's a special part when it has momentum. Of course. You know, I know, I know this fans, they are so lovely, they love the club, they love the player and what they want is just us to give them what we have in the body. So we try, it's been difficult today but they never can ever stop thinking, shouting. So yeah, today's for them, today's for them. So you know there is negativity around preseason, you lost the manager, you lost the lot of top top players. Why has this season started so well for the team first? For the team because, you know, of course, we lost so many players but I think the club worked well and it's good because this is challenging. So we need to play to step up, you know, I mean, so like me, if I instate, I didn't play. Yeah, you know, I mean, like I didn't play last year and so now I have the chance to play so I just need to enjoy this thing a moment and there's so many players, you know, new players, even Amar, today's been unbelievable, you know, I mean, so, so yeah, so even Anthony now, so yeah, so many players have to step up and I think we enjoy to be challenging and with the fans behind us, no one can stop us. So why is the start of this season been so different for you personally, I guess. Injuries part of it, the confidence as well. I mean, how tough did last season get? At its lowest moment. First, because I'm not injured, that's the first thing, and secondly, because I feel confident now, you know, I trust myself, I trust the manager, I trust the club, I trust the player around because, you know, even I didn't play last year, they had like so many training with them, so I know all of them, you know, you've been training a lot, a lot. So now I know, they know, actually they know me, you know, they know my movement and for sure for myself here, I need to enjoy it because last year's been it's been tough, but I enjoy it every single moment now, but it's just the beginning. And I'm not saying anyhow, it wasn't, but we've seen a real top top manager at work here, and Matthias, guys, though, we look at the, not your goal, but the first goal. You tried it about 40 seconds into the game as a team, and then eventually it got you your first goal. That looked like something you'd worked on again and again on the training pitch. Yeah, for sure, for sure, as you said, it had done a top job at the club, we need to respect that. So now the new manager came with the new identity, and yes, that's something we'll be working, but it's everything we've been working because today we've gone on that one, set pieces, okay? So yeah, everything, every part of the game we are really precise, and of course, it's a really dynamic manager, so we need to give everything. But yes, I think it's the best signing of the new customer, so far. Well done. What a great win, what a big smile, and I'm sure that Newcastle fans will be sharing that tonight, because he is a player reborn, Anthony Alango is as well, and Newcastle United have come flying out the traps with a very encouraging performance against Liverpool. Couldn't quite hang on for the victory, but they have their first win of the season at Spurs tonight. Big stories elsewhere today. Hull City's incredible start continues. Two wins on the bounce for them. The first promoted team to do it since Huddersfield, nine years ago. He was the match winner, came off the bench with the only goal of the game, disappointment from Frank Lampard and a late equaliser for David Moise's Everton side. After Alex Scott had put Bournemouth in front, Marcarosa, hoping for his first win that James Tarkovsky had other ideas equalising in the 91st minute. Liverpool held earlier today, two-two by Nottingham Forest. That was the other game that took place on Saturday. Last night we saw Manchester City make it two wins out of two. Palace two defeats out of two. And as you can see, there was a lot more to come still on this Premier League weekend, and you can watch it with us as well. It's time to get more analysis of today's match and head back to the studio. What a great evening. This has been for Newcastle United tonight, a reminder of the opposition of one of those players that they've lost this summer, but they have a manager who seems to hit the ground running in Matias, the Iceland, not just in terms of his Newcastle career, but his Premier League career as well and he is bringing the best out of these players and great to see, you know, and this is the reaction at the end there. It's all smiles for these Newcastle players right now. Did we get, though, Jamie, a glimpse? 30 seconds into this game with their new signing, Nika Gonzalez, who I used to told us before the game would brought in to bring quality to this team. What they're going to be about moving forward. Yeah, absolutely. I think if we can see the goal here, if we just stop it there, sec, this is an indication of how brave they were going to be. You can see the top line there of just players going forward. 30 seconds into the game. This is your right back, Derek. This is Antonio Langer. Now, one thing I will say about Nika Gonzalez is playing for Matias a city. I didn't know. I mean, I always thought, yeah, nice player technical could break the play up, put nice five-yard passes. I didn't really know he had this in his locker, but today he actually proved he has. You know, the manager is already telling you there, there's your pass, there's your pass. Can you deliver it? Because not many can these days. I think how many players are actually ping-a-ball and give this delivery into here? Anyway, so I just let it roll on now. You can see that Derek makes a good run. Now, Antonio Langer has run, Anthony Robertson into a bad position. He doesn't want to get into. Now, you can see a Langer. Very unlucky. All the sudden, that goes in. It's 1-0. Andy Robertson has got nose right there. He's got a problem. And you can see there's been other examples as well of it. You know, we're Tanali. He doesn't really want to run in these areas. It's a great pass, great pick out. And there is an energy and a desire about this new castle site for a minute one. And as a Tottenham hot square player, you're straight way you're thinking, we've got it on here today. We're meant to be the homes here. We're meant to be attacking like this, get the crowd going. But that set up, set the standard. Didn't it very early into the game, Ryan? It did from new castle. And I mean, we said it half-time. They probably didn't play that ball enough or look to go forward quick enough with the front line that they had in the first half. The person who was watching it half-time, right? Yeah, shows what you identified. It was a problem for Spurs. Well, I think it's more the principles and the idea of how the manager wanted to go about the game. So if we stop it here, so we said it's man for man. So Tanali has followed a Langer. Mickey van der Venz has gone into the striker visa, which is fine. I think if you're aggressive with it, and you go on a backwards pass, you go, you'll be aggressive, you try and get the crowd up beyond the front foot, as we play it through. I think this is where the problem was for me and this. It's a bit too passive for my like and so stop it there. So Mickey van der Venz here. If you're going to go and be aggressive, you've got to go. So Marmouche go, Robinson go, go and be aggressive and end the attack there. Is that what we would see from a Brighton team? Well, I think yeah, maybe it's releasing the fear because you've got to be brave to do this. You've got to be brave, you've got to be aggressive. The distance for me is just far too big, far too big and as the play goes on, the center back, so we play it through. The center back is able to step inside, which opens up this area of vulnerability. So as a midfielder, Tanali doesn't want to be there. So I could say, if you're going to go man for man fine, that's what you're doing, that's your idea, your game plan, go and be aggressive. In that moment, if he comes inside, you foul him, you take your medicine, you get back in the shape, and you set up again because that position there for Tanali is a midfielder. It's not a natural one, is it Jamie? It's not something you want to do. Because if Malik Chal, as you say, plays that ball, you can see he's saying to him, play it into the space, you can see the manager, he wants that ball played into the space. It's a mismatch from a physicality point of view. If you think of Mickey van der Ven there, that's a good race. It's a good race, it's perfect. But as a midfielder, having to track that from a top-line player where you can't see off into the cover of your shoulder, it's very difficult to manage. Let's roll it on again, because you see the manager's frustration as well, and it doesn't quite come up. And do you think he would have been saying at halftime, right, let's try this again, let's try and keep this working? Well, they had success from it early on in the game. So there was on the front foot, they had a chance from Alanga, they had a couple of set plays where their front line players were running forward, and they played a few four passes, that's an opportunity, but as the halftwin on, they stopped it, whereas in the second half, they come out and one of the first things they did, they played Alanga in and almost got a penalty, and it was dangerous to top them. And let's see the goal as well, because again, I mean, we almost take it for granted, because of the quality that comes from Nicola Gonzalez here. Yeah, again, if you're talking about going, just stop it there. If you're thinking about being aggressive on the front foot, I think he's got to get closer for Nandes. He's got to stop that. He's already had a warning sign earlier on that he's got that pass in the bag. There's your right back. There's obviously Ancien Langa, Willux, one of the highest midfield players, and I think that there's obviously Nicky van Deven. You've got Harvey Barnes here and Vissa. So they're doing it same what they did in the first half, but I feel that from Tottenham's point of view, they don't really ever get sorted. This time, Tonali doesn't really get with him, and I think that's something that a problem with all game, Ryan. Yeah, I think from Newcastle's point of view, it's a magnificent goal. Obviously worked on it. I think the run to be aggressive with a header, the time in the swivel from the Langa, it's top draw, but from Tottenham's point of view, I hate it. I've got to be honest, I hate it. Normally, in this situation, it's fine. You're in a 4-4-2. Normally, the priority is to protect inside, to stay as compact as possible and protect inside. It's not a normal situation, for me, to have a man-for-man reference in this moment of the game. When you're being passive, to ask Tonali to have this is his reference, like I said, a player that's behind him. Normally, if you think of man-for-man teams that are really aggressive, it's on a backwards pass, and they go, they have a reference that they can see, they go, they're aggressive, and they're on the front foot. For the midfielder to do that, it's nearly impossible for him to manage, if Mickey van Devent doesn't slide, and it goes back to principles. Normally, you'll see this will happen a lot, a lot in the Premier League, in the Championship League one. The duel goes up, the instinct, or what you're taught as a defender, bull goes over your head, you run back, you're on back, you slide, you're going, you protect your mate, but we didn't see that, and I think that comes down to the principles, and the idea of how they were trying to defend, Mickey's focus was on him, and hit focus on him. Tonali's responsibility is a langer, and in that moment, there's only one winner to get that. How good is that finish as well, Ryan? I think it's top draw. Honestly, this finish is top draw, it's with his weaker foot, his run-up pace, I think probably under rest of the quality of the touch, to slow down and set himself. Like I say, the finish, the move, the timing of everything, it's excellent from the past. And that run again, we could just see him there. Obviously, he's got that space, and they've got that 2v1, Andy Robinson knows, he's got a problem, he's been pointing at Tonali, he wants his captain to do more, but as that ball goes, and you can see, you're right back, he's on the mark, because he knows, he's got that delivery. If he can't play that 50-yard pass, he doesn't even bother running. So as he hits it, you can see then that he comes alive, a langer knows, he's onto that second ball, he's going to win that race, gets a good first touch. Now, can you stop yourself? Can you calm yourself down? Because last year, and that was, I know what you're going to say, that was the criticism, he couldn't slow down. No, but last year, he wouldn't have had the confidence and the belief, and you know, this has said it, and it feels to probably people at home listening, go, is it really that simple? Sometimes it is, it's confidence, it's a belief, it's got a manager that's putting his arm around the shoulder, he started another game, and that was an absolute wonderful piece, absolutely wonderful piece of play from him. And I love to see it, because we're so quick to doubt players, and to say, you know, I'm sure, I heard Newcastle fans last year, and I'm sure he'd be going into the games, and I thought, it's so hard for him, because the crowd was second guessing everything he did, he was probably second guessing himself, but now, he looks like a real player, he looks like a real player, so does Johann Vista, because Johann Vista wasn't a bad player at Brentford, he just looked a bad player last year, for whatever reason, he started the season poorly, he was trying to get full some move, he didn't have a preseason, went to a big club like Newcastle, couldn't handle that expectation, now he's had a full preseason, the manager's putting his arm around him, only looks like a player, and this is how simple it is sometimes, you need a bit of time, and you need to be calm and patient with players, but that was a brilliant team goal from Newcastle's point of view, exposing exactly what Ryan said, where a team are playing man for man, too aggressive, but not quite, got it right yet, because they're two weeks into the season, that will change. Did it look like that was a move, and a series of moves that had been constructed on the training ground by Matthias Yisler? I think so, I think so, because it happened early, and I probably didn't see or touch upon it, but as it goes on, the players sort of look at the manager as if to say like perfect, and Jamie referenced it early on when it happened 30, 35, 40 seconds into the game, the manager was there pointing, he was there, and it can be attacked, it sometimes you feel there's a mismatch on the pitch, whether that be from a direct ball, 1v1 situations, it's incredible play from the right back being aggressive, and I can't speak highly enough for that finish, that is a top-top finish, and I think probably what we're seeing now with the right back going up, it's bringing a langer inside the pitch, when you're inside the pitch and you've got that pace, you're closer to goal, you're closer to the goal, and I think he's probably a player that doesn't need thinking time, and that's an instinctive finish, and it was a draw. You said you hated it from Tottenham's point of view, and I think we were both in agreement on this, and we could just see that one last angle there, please, Kelsey, on the first goal, because this for me is a problem, and the captain is, this is why I mentioned him and I reference what he does, so Mickey van de Vem, you're the captain, you're the leader, and you can see everything, that's why you're a centre-back, I think his body shape, his body position is all wrong here, and we could just let it run on just a little bit, please, as that ball gets into Nico, like there's a cutler thing, as I say, I think Fernandez is like, what's he doing? Don't close him, get him under pressure, get his head down, now I look at Mickey van de Vem, he's walking, he's walking, is he really in a position, he's crossing his feet over, I want to see him ready, because now this is starting to revolve, Andy Robertson's got a problem, he's already pointed to him, now if I'm the centre-back, I'm thinking to myself, I can help my mate here, because that ball is going to go over my head, if I shift over with my electric pace, because he's not even in the same line as his defence, he then can get that second ball, and save him, this man, who doesn't want to run back 50 yards to have that problem, so as we let it run again, just watch Mickey van de Vem, look, he starts to jog, instead of sprinting now, you sprint Mickey, because if you sprint, you stop this, but he doesn't, and he keeps jogging now, and then he keeps jogging, and then he decides to think, oh, I'll cap it and go and press him now, and he's one yard away, if he'd have sprinted at the start, absolutely no doubt in my mind, and it's not about being, well, the manager can tell you instruction, give you instructions about going mad for mad, but there's sometimes, in football, you have to figure out for yourself, you're the captain, he could have stopped that as source, that's really poor play from Mickey van de Vem, and he needs to lead with his team, because he is the captain now. Second goal, set piece, now experts, they have a problem, last season, perhaps the season before, in terms of their goalkeeper constantly being crowded at set pieces, is a different kind of play, but it felt easy from a new castle perspective, what did you spot here, Ryan? Obviously that just made subs, so responsibility is, can get a bit lost, but Valtemarder is a big boy, and this is his first touch of the game, by the way, Valtemarder. I think we spoke about before the game, and I think the way Roberto, once his team to look, is going to be a lot more technical, so then if you stop it here, we can just stop it, which is fine, we need more responsibility from, you're Mickey van de Vem, you're Van Heck, and Rodrigo Bentancore is the other zonal player in this month, so they're the free big headers, but do you think that's a personal issue to start with, is it only there that really wants to head the ball? I don't think so, I think it's just understanding your roles and responsibilities, normally in those moments, you're free big headers, you want them free, so if the ball comes in their zone, they go, they'll be aggressive, they head the ball. I think where the goals come from is Bentancore is in the back post zone, he's thinking, this is my zone, I'm going to go ahead the ball, so he takes a couple of steps back and vacates his zone, but he doesn't affect the ball, doesn't affect the ball, so when the knockdown happens, it goes right into his zone, so I think they'll probably analyse that, listen everyone has different ideas of how they want it to look if we stop it there, so Mickey van de Vem van Heck in their zones, they couldn't affect the ball, they slide, they stay compact in their zones, here I think Rodrigo Bentancore, the second he realises and can judge the flight of the ball, I'm not affecting this, I need to stay here, because then my responsibility changes, I'm not a header of the ball, I'm someone that needs to defend their zone and to protect inside the goal, it's really poor from from Spurs this point of view, quite easy from Newcastle's point of view, but again, great The end of the improvisation for the finish as well. The finish is unbelievable, it's really instinctive, really good. So here's a question for you as a coach and as a manager, so you've had two games now and you've conceded two goals from set pieces, last week I thought they defended it poor with Sangari, the ball came into the back post with Collins, not to back to Sangari, it gets you shot and they win the second ball again, that's two goals when they've lost that second ball, dual if you like, how do you go about changing that, obviously I know they made two substitutions because it ends up with Kudish and Doggy as the two men that are trying to do the blocks. It just depends, I think sometimes the time in the run the ball is perfect, I think in the goals they've conceded is probably structural things, it's early on in the season and I don't need two negative towards Tottenham and I don't want to take anything away from Newcastle because I thought they fully deserved the win and thought it was excellent, but the goals they've conceded are I think they was avoidable and probably more importantly understanding the importance of those moments, they're so big, the first half was KG, set plays are so important. Nico Gonzalez comes into the team, you see the impact he's had in terms of the goals and you wonder actually how many training sessions that he's been part of since he joined from Manchester City and then able straight away to impact the match. Yeah, I mean good players, they shouldn't need too much time, let's be honest, he's a player that's come from a fellow Premier League club, a club that's been very well run, been successful as well, so he's a top player, he's a top player, I don't think there's any doubt in that and he's come ready and I think credit to him, he's obviously had a preseason where it was a bit of uncertainty but he's come into the game from a physical point of view and mentally, he was ready to compete for a minute one and that's what you are, that's the mentality you need, that's the mentality you need for top players. What'd you like about him today, Jamie? Everything, I mean it looks a really good sign, it doesn't he? And you know, they've lost Gimmerist, Sanali, two of the most important players arguing in Newcastle's recent history, you know, they were the engine room with Joe Linton in there and he came in and it was seamless for me, his passing was good, his ranger passing was good and I think he's actually got probably a lot more to his game than what he showed, it was difficult, when he came first, went to Manchester City, he was probably almost in a no-win situation, you were taken over from Rodry who was so formidable at his job and he didn't quite obviously, he didn't go to plan because Manchester lost so many games, they were almost just talking about Rodry all the time, now he's going to go here, he's got an opportunity to be the main man, play well, you know, look at that, line breaking passes, you know, things like that, the confidence that he's going to have, and he'll know, he probably didn't realise how big a club Newcastle is, he does now, this is a huge club, but a huge opportunity for him, I bet you can't wait for his home debut now. They were brewing the absence of Tanali and Bruno Gimmeration, they might well have a new hero here for Newcastle fans and they haven't had too long to wait, have they either. First victory in the Premier League for Matthias Yisler as the Newcastle boss and we can get his reaction with Patrick Davison. Matthias, I think a good start just became a great start. I used to get really happy with what you've seen for me players today. Yeah, incredible. I'm really proud. We are really proud as a club, as the coaching staff to see a team on the pitch delivering already on a high level, the match plan, but also seeing players fully committed to what we're doing. And this is a good start. Really, really proud. So also a moment to enjoy. Did this feel performance wise and in terms of understanding your match plan? Did this feel like actually quite a big step forward, even from last week? We did well also last week. Therefore, it was a step in the right direction, again, against a strong opponent with huge signings during the winter, the window now. So this is something we were aware of, but how we handled a challenge was so amazing. And it looks like it's been a hard week of work on the training ground because the first goal, you tried that move 40 seconds into the game, nearly got a goal, and then it did work, obviously, for Alanga opening the scoring. So just tell us in your preparation what you'd seen in terms of where the space wasn't how hard you worked on that. It's always the same. As a coach, you tried to emphasize where you could potentially stress the opponent. You find gaps, you analyze that. And this is what matters today, but in general, we try to keep our principles under pitch independent of the opponent today. It happened two or three times, and we're happy to see that. Are you surprised in any way with how quickly this team looks I mean, it doesn't look like you only had three weeks in preseason, it doesn't look like a new team. It's also not a complete new team and the DNA of Newcastle United is a good fit to the playing style. I like to see, so therefore we saw already in the past similarities and now we used the time in the best efficient way, and I'm again proud to see that already. I asked you before the game about Nico Gonzalez, what does he add? And you just gave one word, quality. You were right. So you see, I'm even longer out of this time now. Then I'm happy that you somehow think that I'm smart, because I think it's just obviously when he has the ball, he has a good timing, went to deliver in the last line, but also went to slow a little bit down the game and finding time to regenerate our batteries. So it's a really good debut. So Weser and Alanga are, you know, by their own admission, delivering far more than they did at any point last season. How much of that is down to you? I don't take the compliments yet, so I try just to encourage them, to motivate them, to support them, not only the two of them, the whole squad together with my stuff. We're here to deliver these tasks. That's our workshop, but again, I'm really happy to see the improvement. And on a personal level, you were a few seconds away last week from your first Premier League win, but this week you've done it. What does it mean? If you don't know, you've probably not done it yet, that you look back at the journey, get into this point. It's only one step, but it must mean a lot. Yeah, it means a lot. I just said that to the lights in the locker room that we can count now, also on our defensive stability. The clean sheet was today a big, big goal, and we deliver it, so I'm pretty proud. And just a couple of days left until the transfer window closes. For what you've seen today, no more business needed, or it's important actually not to think like that. You still need a bit of help. Yeah, we are realistic. We don't see the high too high, no. Don't expect me now to think already too big. We have high ambitions, and we know what it's needed. The squad is strong. That's also something we saw today, but there's still a couple of days left, and then we can talk again. Can you be specific in terms of any positions, in terms of what must happen for you to be right up until January, at least? I'm here now for three weeks, you know me already a bit, so I expected a one-word answer to be honest. So no, thank you well done today. Thanks. I've seen his bigger press conferences. He gives absolutely nothing away on that front, but he has certainly made an impact already, hasn't he? Ryan, from young manager, yourself, to young manager Yisler, what's impressed you about the way that he's handled himself, the way he's gone about things every first three or four weeks? I think ultimately he's got results, which is always the most important thing, to come in at the stage in which he did into preseason, brings its challenges, but he's obviously, he's got something about him, which I think is when you manage in a big club, how you manage the media, the messaging that you get across to the fans, to the players, they'll be able to feel that, and like I say, he's following a top, top manager, we've done an incredible job, they've lost some big players, but they've also, they've also got some players that are stepping up. Let me drill into that a little bit, is that then in terms of he's got a bit about him, is that perception, is that aura, is that personality, are those things that you need to be a top manager? I think everything, and ultimately you're being judged by the players every single day, so on the training pitch in the meeting rooms, that's something, but then also to the fans and to the outside world, you see him, you hear him, and I think he speaks very well, he's got a good personality, and like I say, you need that when you're managing a big club. It's a bit of that, I remember when we first saw Jürgen Club, I'm not trying to compare Jürgen Club to your shit, but Jürgen Club having cuddles of his players, we were supposed to talk about it, I cool my one of those cuddles, because it was such, there was that kind of relationship with the players, and we don't see that very often, but already you see Anthony Elanga, they're embracing, and there's obviously a bit of mutual respects and love for each other already, that's hard to find. Now, I think what has helped him, and some people thought, well, how can that help? We could have lost two good players, is getting the likes of Gimma Rez out and Tanali out while they, when they did, because I think if they would have stayed at the club, in and around the dressing room, every single press conference, every single talk, every single thing in the dressing room would have been around, circling around those two players. The fact that they've got them out, the fact that Kets Hall, Lewis Hall was a really big thing as well, he'll stay, he's not going anywhere, there's no chance he leaves, not now, maybe in the future windows he might, but no way they sell him now. I think has really helped him, because he can just get his arms around the players that he wants that are here, and they want to do something, and I think the fact that they're playing so well is a lot to do with that, because sometimes it's not what you get out, it's who you keep in, but you want players that are going to play for you. It wasn't just those two Jamie as well, it was Anthony Gordon, so there were three big players, three big personalities, three big characters, three players of huge experience in that new castle dressing room, and actually when he took over, it did feel a little bit like, he was, well, Q and Trip is experienced as well, it felt like he was almost walking into a crisis club, that was the perception at the time. Of course, and you've taken over from, as we were writing, I was saying, taken over from Eddie Halls, and I commented a club, I thought this is a really difficult one, if you don't start well, you're going to get under pressure in about 10 games, that's how it felt, but he's obviously got a confidence and an aura about him, as you mentioned, and now it looks almost quite healthy, if you looked at Tanali and Gonzalez, that feels like it's a reasonable replacement for him, Gimmeres is amazing player, they're going to miss that energy, and he was talismanic for that club, you know, Anthony Gordon, the pace that he's got, but they've got a Langer now, and hopefully they can still get a couple of players in for him. We can speak live now, too, the match in it, Anthony Alanga, hugely impressive last week, he gets Liverpool hugely impressive tonight, at Spurs and Here He Is, waiting to speak to us, Anthony, thank you so much, we're just talking about your new manager, tell us your impression of what he's like. Since day one, I feel like we've clicked, he spoke to me and he spoke to all the lads of us, well, and we know what he expects from us, he's very positive every single day, and I feel like you can see in a performance as we really want to keep a clean sheet, and then we know going forward, we've got the speed and the quality to hurt teams, it's a lot of noise, extra, external, but we've got to focus on what we can do in the team, we believe in ourselves, we believe in our qualities, and all we can do now is just let our football do what we're talking really. Now Anthony, you are certainly doing that, here is a step for you, the last new castle player to score the first two Premier League games of the season, Alan Shearer, 23 years ago, I got a celebration. So what do you think of that? No, it's obviously, I just want to keep on pushing really, I feel like since the managers come in, it's given me that freedom, that confidence to just keep pushing on, and obviously since the World Cup coming back, I feel really good, and the lads as well are helping me on and off the ball, the way we want to play. It's just about keeping when we've still got 36 games left in the Premier League, we can't just dwell on these two, we've got to keep on pushing on and find ways to improve, and that's the type of player I am, I'm not a finished article, I know I can always improve, and it starts again, I've got to go back to the training ground and see what I can do about it, and learn from that. But you'll be aware, you've referenced the outside noise, Anthony, already. You'll be aware that people are saying that you are a player reborn. Your first season new castle, big price tag, no goals, now two in two. What is the difference? It's going in the Champions League, but I know, in the Premier League, I didn't score, but all I can focus on is what I do at the training ground, and I know last season wasn't my best, but I feel like as long as I keep on improving, and keep on learning from the guys at the training ground, eventually we'll click, and right now it's going well, but I just want to keep on improving, keep on helping the team winning games, because at the end of the day, that's what matters the most, and yeah, one today, looking forward to the game against one next week. Anthony, Jamie Redknack, congratulations mate, wonderful performance, great goal as well. Just talk us through it, because I want to take you back to about 30 seconds into the game, and there was a clear plan of what you were trying to achieve with yourself and dead it, you made a running behind Andy Robertson. I hopefully you can see it there. This was something that the manager has spoken to you about very early. Yeah, for sure. We know the first 15 minutes, they're going to come all gone blazing, so it's important to hurt them in behind, and I've got a really good relationship, me and Emma, and we've been working on things that is in training, and I feel like that was the start of it. I was a bit annoyed at the first start, because I felt like I was making runs for once, but no one could find me, but at the end of the day, you can make 10 runs and only get one ball, but I just need to keep on doing it, keep on doing it, and I feel like that was the warning sign, and in a second off, we've got it right. And they felt like there was a little battle between you and Tanali, where he was having to mark you at times, and I can see you smiling, because you know you had him for pace, and that's that ball comes in for your goal, and it was obviously a brilliant goal. That seemed to be something as well that you worked on. Nico Gunsale is with that pass from left to right, and then obviously your pace running off the back of Tanali. Yeah, again, something we've been working on in training, and when you get in that situation, this is instantly, you know what a goal is, and when you're feeling the way I'm feeling right now, just about getting it on target, and something I've been working a lot during the summer, with my coach, so I just want to keep on keeping improving. I've never seen a replay, that's a really nice finish. It's a really nice finish. Talk about your coach, I think I know who you're talking about. I saw a lot of stuff on social media working one-to-one with him on your touch, your skills. How important has that been for you this summer? I think Harry King, is that right? Yeah, there's a few coaches I've been working with, and Harry is one of them, but the main thing is when I get in them situations to be calm, because at the end of the day, I'm working so hard to get in them positions, and now it's just well-finding that product right, and that's something I've been working on, and I just want to keep on working on it, because again, I'm not a finished article, and that's just credit to the guys I've been working with at the club as well, and yeah, it's just why I keep on going really. And you obviously have got such great pace. How important, then, is it at times, because you have that pace, just slow yourself down and compose yourself to get that finish away like you did? Yes, it's really important, because I could get in them like last season, I got in a few of them opportunities, but it's just the final bits, and it's important to slow down, because you could find the pass, or again, you could find the finish, so I just need to, there's times where I can speed up, and there's times where I can slow down, but I find that balance, and like I said, two games in, two goals, it's a decent start, but I want more, I just want to keep going. The celebration looked familiar as well to us, Anthony, so we just, I'm going to show you this in the monitor as well. We've seen this somewhere before against Spurs. I've always said, do I use my favourite player, so I knew the score today, that celebration's going to come up. Well, he's got his statue, of course, so maybe you can have one next to Alan Shearers now, because you've matched this start to this season. No, I've still got a long way to go to to match Alan's legends, so use that inspiration to keep pushing. We've enjoyed talking to you. Keep it going. Thanks very much. Congratulations. Thank you guys. What are you thinking of that, Ryan? There is a man who had this impression talking to him before, he's very serious about his football. He seems humble, hardworking, and that's what you want, that's what you expect, and he started really well, but you can't get carried away with yourself, his two games, he started well, and he spoke about the confidence and instinct in that area of the pitch when he arrived, and I guess the challenge for him now is to keep arriving in there as much as possible, because when you start scoring goals and you get that feeling, you can go in a run. So the challenge for him is keep arriving, keep practicing on the training pitch, like he said, build in those relationships, and try and affect as many games as possible. He was not in an approval, Jamie, your question about that slowing down, because when you're a player so fast, why is that so important? We all love to have had that pace, you know, and it is, Tiere, we've got Tiere on Monday night football, Tiere is a great exponent of that, and somehow he managed the beautiful speed with the balance and the poise, and be able to compose himself when you have opportunities to finish, and I always think about Tiere as you can't inside, and just sort of, as he's falling, just bending it into the corner, and that's something that Anthony does possess. I genuinely, I saw it in Nottingham Forest, there were times and I thought there's a real player there, and then last year, like all of us, and I'm sure he would have moments at home thinking, what's happened to me? Scored in the Champions League. Yeah, but what's happened to my game? Why can't I, I don't, the ball doesn't feel like it's my friend anymore, you know, and then the crowd starts to get on you, and that relationship goes between the body and the ball, and it's hard, and once you're in that place, sometimes you know if you're going to get out of it, and then you work hard at pre-season, a good World Cup, and he comes back to pre-season, and then a couple of doors have opened for him, like, Anthony Gordon going, okay, my chance now, I'm going to start. The first weekend that season manager picks the team, he sees his name on that team sheet, and that's all it takes sometimes. You need that little bit of love, and that belief, and he's taken it now, and now the newcastle fans are probably giving him plenty of grief, I started to think, actually, well, I've got this wrong, we got a player here. And that finish last week when he did have time to think about it. Could that be the difference, the springboard for an entire season, because, as you all well know, it's just that intangible confidence? Yeah, I mean, the finish last week was equally as good, because I'm pretty sure when a transition happened, and he had the foot race from inside of his own off, his eyes were probably lightened up, because you see the space, and you see the opportunity, and sometimes they're difficult. When you run, you probably had an 80-yard sprint, so then compose yourself, and I think when you're running that fast, the tendency is to hit the ball higher, and I think he's balanced, and that one was excellent, it stayed over the ball, we got over it, hit across the keeper, today's one was a lot different, now he had to slow himself down, he had to adjust, and he almost swiveled on the fall, and I mean, the finish today is, as good a finish as you're going to see all weekend. Yeah, very impressive. What about Newcastle's business then, with just a few days left of this transfer window? Yeah, I said, wouldn't answer the question from Patrick on that, but this is what they've done so far, and I think what's striking Jamie about a lot of these is the age, and that second-last column there on the right-hand side, because they've obviously targeted potential and youth, what do they need if anything to really arm him for another cracker at European football? I think sometimes just thickening up the squad, just getting the players in the round, I mean, the amazing thing is they've got two signings here in Torre and Bamber, we haven't even seen really play yet, we've seen obviously glimpses, then it looks like a really good right back, at 24, like sometimes the coming to the Premier League has adjusted really well, you know, Hornet Check as well, and Stather Midfield player, I like, so it looks like that business has been smart, you know, Tottenham have gone with tried and trusted players, but a lot of those, obviously, apart from Nicarth, I'm right in saying they've all come from, you know, different countries, but they've adjusted well, and I think there was no expectations, which has probably helped the manager a little bit, because there's no real pressure, but he'll just look at it and think, I may be another striker, if he could get one in, just to give, just to help, take that pressure off them, obviously Dan Burns going to be fit as a club captain, need him back for what he brings as well, but I don't know, what else would you think they need in that squad, Ryan? No, I'll probably agree, they seem quite a stable squad, as a whole, I think they've recruited really well, the one stands out for me is all a zero there, so you've got players coming into the league that are hungry to impress, but then also go back to the responsibility of the ones that know the Premier League, and when you start getting to November, December and the intensity is still super high, they need to add up and take more responsibility and help these players, but they've started really well, the new signings, there's some relationships that have also been geling from last season, so yeah, I'm sure if you're a new Castle fan, it's been quite an exciting start for you. I think as well, Ryan, if they would have lost these first two games, this is how it can change so quickly and football, their window would have looked so much different, because they're the gone, we need players, the manager, we need players, but now they're probably thinking, no, we're all right, we don't need to do anything, and they might live to regret that, so if there are a couple of opportunities and they can, I don't know what their PSR is going to be like now, but obviously they must have some money available, they probably do need to, if anything, I would my advice would be just to make sure that you give him the opportunity and the players that he needs. Wait a minute, now is he. So no one from Sky Sports can do this really what? Yeah, but have you seen how many matches they've got this season? They're all just too busy. Fine, I'll do it myself. Sky Sports have got 1,500 live matches this season, search Get Sky Sports to find out more. That's not bad, you know. So I can I could get on the telly? Hmm, don't push it. Well, there goes that dream. You're listening to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game. What a good night for Newcastle United. They're first win of the season, they're first away win, and they're first win of any kind under their new manager, Matthias Yisler. And that would explain why they have done so well on the finalists ratings. This evening, Anthony Alanga, the top pick, you have been rating the players at home. On the app, Anthony Alanga, Deditch, Visor and Hall, the top players for Newcastle, and a bit of a sorry story for Spurs and Matthias Fernandez. Spurs fans say there's the best of them at 60. The Langer actually, the top rated player across the Premier League today in the finalists. 86. Back down to earth with a bump for Roberto Deservio, it was hoping that the game against Charlton, the Carabai, a couple of sign of things to come, but it's been the same old story in the Premier League. It's actually his first home defeat of Spurs manager, Inneley, and he's giving his reaction to Patrick Davison. Well, Roberto, you've had the players in the dressing room there for quite a while. I know you can't share everything, some of it's private, but can you give us an idea? What you've said to them, what you've asked of them. No, I said what I'm telling you now. I think for 60, 65 minutes, we play better than Newcastle. We had a chance to score. We didn't score, and then after the goal, we lost the distances, we created another chance, but if you analyze the numbers of the game, we had more chance, we shoot more in goal. We are not team yet. We have to improve in a lot of things, but it's normal for a new team. Forget the result, because the result is more important than the other things, but I'm not angry. I think we are working well. We were unlucky today for the result, especially for the result, yeah. So the problems you saw today, like you said, the distances, is a lot of that down in your view, to being a lot of new players, some players came back today, you had five changes from the bent of the game. So it is a lot of the problems explained by that, do you think? Yes, but anyway, we had more control of the ball. Yes, we can improve in defense's face in the distances. Sometimes we again, the ball, especially in the first half, and we had a chance to score. I think also, with the ball, we can improve. We can keep the order better, much better. But it is part of work when you change many players and when you start the new project, the new team is like this football. The first goal they scored, it felt like they've been trying to do that all match since the very first minute. What more can you do to prevent a goal like that? Is that about the initial press, the pressure on the ball being better? No, Tonelli lost the duels with Elanga, in that moment was Tonelli with Elanga. But yes, one part of the game, one problem of the game was the defense's face, the order, the distances in the defense's face. But I think we had more chance to score and we didn't. There were some booze at full time from the supporters, which I guess may be less about just today, but the fact that they've seen two seasons, not with you, but of very poor home performances, very poor league performances, is the key now, not to panic, to be patient if they can be. You have not panic. I know very well where I going, what was the plan, what could be the difficult problem we could find in our way. I'm sorry for the fans for the result. I'm sorry for the players for the result, but we have to improve and to change two seasons like the last two is impossible in 10 days or is impossible with the paper in transfer market. We have to work hard on the pitch, we have to find the connection between the players because last season, before the end of the season, we were in championship and we stay up. I think together, not just the player, but with the fans with the club. So now we have to be calm. That is increasingly hard for the Spurs. Fans stayed up on the final day of last season, 17th in the last two seasons. Big transfer spend, they're expecting more. Do they have the patience to go on this journey? How good was Spurs today and did they deserve more than they go? I think goals change games. I agree with them, I thought it's the second half of the first half, I thought they were a bit of a team. They played between the Lions a lot more and it felt a lot more like his team. The problem was it was arriving with the wingers and nothing really materialised. Obviously, Pedro Polaro played as a right-winger now, going forward in three or four weeks time. That's not going to be the case. I trust the manager, I really like him. He's proven he's a top coach. I thought the job he'd done at the end of the last season was really good because he found a way to win when the confidence was low and I just think in this probably initial period now where players are still building relationships, getting fitter, you still need to find a way to get a result or two, just to keep the scoreball ticking and build a bit of momentum. But I like the manager, he's honest, I think he's a good coach and I think Tottenham are going to look completely different in three or four weeks time. It's tough for Spurs fans, isn't it, though, Jamie? Because here we go again. So poor at home last season, they've started off in the worst possible fashion here. But can you see green shoots with the way they particularly today they've tried to play? It was a lot better than last week, well, it couldn't be any worse. They were awful last week. But what I will say is that I'm not trying to repeat, but this is, there are team that's going to look totally different in four or five weeks. Now they still should be doing better than what they are. And I still have a couple of worries. I looked at that balance in midfield. I think with Fernandez, Tanali and Benton Core, I don't think three of them, one of them is necessarily a ten. Tell one that left-hand side doesn't do enough for me. I want more product, I want more productive, I want a bit more energy, pace, goals going through it. I feel they need to get someone at left-hand side. So extremely lopsided on the other side, if they get Kool-Ajeski back, they've got Savio, they've got who this as well who's going to now going to be fit. My emotions are lanky, they've got those from an attacking point of view. And I still feel, I don't know if you agree with this one, there might still be a bit of movement because that's the hard thing for him. And they've got obviously players to come back in from fitness, Madison is out, I could do with him at the moment because I think he gives them a little bit of an extra dimension at midfield. So I'm going to compare that cute and clever pass. Now as you do arts are going forward, they want to become a top four top five team. But one thing they have to get over, forget about, it's a relevant of all the players, they have to get over this fear about playing at home. Because there's no doubt, it can't be a coincidence that their home record is so poor, they have to change that, they have to want to go, when are you going, well you can't wait to get home, can you, you want to go home this week, brilliant, it's going to crowd behind us, they have a fear about playing at home, Ryan. Yeah and the results probably dictate that, the energy inside the place, you can probably feel that, but one result can change a lot, and you get a win and the feeling can be completely different. You need the personality to play at home, you need to look at the stadium, it's incredible, it's beautiful, the fans are amazing, when they're with you, it's, it's an incredible and it's an intimidate in place to play up, and they need to, they need to tap into that. I think you referenced it at half time, Ryan, you need to be brave on the ball, but brave off the ball as well in terms of that really aggressive press. Can it be just a question of adding more to this group? Would you, would you advocate them doing that before Tuesday? It wouldn't surprise me, Jamie mentioned it on the left side, there was a couple of situations, I think of Mithoma at Bryant and under deserving, he was electric, he was such a threat and the way they play with the box in the middle of the park, the responsibility of the wingers to be goal scorers is huge in his teams, and we've seen the last two weekends, the front three last weekend, and having Pedro Poros arguably won the better right backs in the league, just won the, won the World Cup with Spain playing as a right winger, it probably suggests at the moment these players aren't quite fitting off on not quite ready, so it wouldn't surprise me, but he mentioned there about staying calm, he knows they need to work on a training pitch, but he also knows they need to pick up results. We'll know in 48 hours what we Jamie, one thing that was talked about for Spurs last season in terms of a weakness was their ability to progress the ball up the pitch from those central defensive areas, I think the best number of line-breaking passes last year was 18, Van Hecker has done better that, 22 on his home debut, is this a real positive would you say in terms of Spurs building moves moving forward? Yeah, I think this one here was a really nice piece of play, the ball goes up, that wasn't that one, but it was another one in a minute, but that's what you're looking to do, just play in the ball forward, so you give people more time on the ball, and there was a few times with him, especially Van Hecker, that he gave him that little bit more quality there from Poro, which we normally expect him to do. This pass here looks like he's under pressure, we just cut across one here and all of a sudden you're out the other side, that's the difference of what he can bring, and that's why I'm not worried about Tottenham in three or four weeks, once they start to get that confidence in belief and you start to get your best players to gnarly up to speed, Fernandez, it will take a different shape. I think people are enjoying the fact now that Tottenham spent all this money in not playing well, they should their wasted this money, he will prove to be a really good sign, and as well a lot of them, I've got no doubt whatsoever. So who finishes higher, do you think this season on, we like to make snap judgments, don't we, after two weekends? I think Tottenham has still finished higher than Newcastle, and then to some Newcastle fans, they should enjoy this moment, but I think that the squad that they have, and given six or seven weeks were getting the players up to speed, I think they will, but Newcastle is surprising, because I think a lot of Newcastle fans will have started a year, they're probably just thinking we're a bottom half team now, we're going to really struggle, we just want to make sure we don't get in a relegation fight, they should be thinking going the other way now, but I think Tottenham will finish above them. Where do you think Spurs should be aiming for? I don't think they should set a limit, I think when you're caught this size and you're spending the money they have, I think they should just try and set the highest possible standard and create the best possible culture, so I think for them it needs to be higher, they need to aim higher, they're not what you're up in football this year, which the last two seasons, the squad, it's not been able to cope with the demands of free games a week, whereas this year with a top coach and new signings, that enthusiasm, I think now comes strong. Spurs fans will have enjoyed listening to you Ryan, I'm sure. Thank you very much for being with us tonight, Jamie, thank you very much as well, we're just getting started this weekend.
