1. Executive Overview: Core Theses & Key Revelations

The latest installment of the Total Soccer Show weekend review provided a masterclass in dissecting the strategic realities of elite European football. At the center of the dialogue sat the 240th Derby della Madonnina, where AC Milan secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Inter Milan at San Siro. Beyond the immediate scoreline—settled by a superb strike from Pervis Estupiñán—the match exposed a widening divergence between statistical dominance and game-state mastery. Analyst Graham Ruthven noted that Inter effectively got "Allegri'd" for the second time this season, yielding the result despite controlling possession, recording higher expected goals (xG), and accumulating superior shot volume. Milan's ability to grab an early lead and immediately collapse into a hyper-disciplined, compact 4-4-2 defensive block paralyzed Inter's offensive mechanics, highlighting how possession without central penetration can become a trap against elite low blocks.

This tactical reality forms the primary thesis of the panel's review: modern football is increasingly defined by game-state manipulation rather than cosmetic territorial dominance. Inter's inability to break down Milan's defensive perimeter, even when playing against a Rossoneri side stripped of foundational talent in recent transfer windows, reveals systemic vulnerabilities in Simone Inzaghi's setup. Taylor Rockwell pointedly highlighted the macro-economic context surrounding Milan's triumph: the club has navigated the high-profile departures of Tijjani Reijnders to Manchester City, Malick Thiaw to Newcastle United, and Theo Hernández to Al-Hilal. Despite this talent drain, tactical clarity enabled Stefano Pioli's side to out-think their cross-town rivals, forcing Inter into sterile wide circulation and low-probability crossing patterns.

A second central revelation emerged regarding individual player trajectories across the continent. Ruthven posited a compelling critique of Inter midfielder Nicolò Barella, suggesting that the Italian international has entered a multi-season performance regression. Once considered the unquestioned engine of Inter's midfield dynamism, Barella was largely isolated and neutralised in the derby, symbolic of a broader stagnation within Inter's central build-up. Conversely, the panel highlighted remarkable individual resurgence elsewhere in Europe: Antoine Griezmann's evergreen playmaking for Atletico Madrid, Nico González's extraordinary Messi-esque transformation off the bench against Real Sociedad, and Alexander Sørloth's execution of an Erling Haaland-style penalty-box profile under Diego Simeone.

Finally, the episode established vital markers for upcoming European fixtures. Barcelona's 1-0 victory over Athletic Club, secured via another breathtaking strike from adolescent prodigy Lamine Yamal, masked deep-seated physical lethargy within Hansi Flick's squad. Ruthven sounded an urgent warning ahead of Barcelona's Champions League journey to St James' Park, emphasizing that any repetition of such sluggishness will see them overwhelmed by Newcastle United's physical intensity and intimidating home atmosphere. Coupled with a candid evaluation of domestic cup storytelling—where lower-league drama, Chelsea's narrow survival against Wrexham, and the global commercial branding of "America's Team" intersected—the conversation offered a comprehensive audit of football's tactical, economic, and narrative landscape.

2. Context & Background: The Landscape Leading to This Conversation

To fully appreciate the weight of the analysis presented on Total Soccer Show, one must contextualize the broader macroeconomic and tactical environment governing European football in early 2026. Serie A has undergone a complex evolution over the past five seasons. The league, long romanticized for defensive pragmatism, experienced a modern tactical renaissance characterized by aggressive pressing and fluid positional rotations. However, as Simone Inzaghi's Inter Milan established domestic supremacy—building an empire on sophisticated 3-5-2 rotations and wing-back progression—rival managers have responded by resurrecting refined, modern variants of low-block game-state management. AC Milan's derby strategy represented the pinnacle of this defensive counter-revolution: conceding the perimeter to protect the penalty area, thereby exposing the limits of Inzaghi's possession-heavy structures when deprived of central spatial freedom.

This tactical dynamic is further complicated by the ongoing financial restructuring of European football. Italian clubs continue to operate under severe capital asymmetry relative to the English Premier League and the Saudi Pro League. The departures of Reijnders to Manchester City, Thiaw to Newcastle United, and Theo Hernández to Al-Hilal illustrate how Serie A powerhouses are routinely forced to sell key pillars to sustain financial solvency. Milan's ability to maintain competitive parity despite losing world-class personnel in midfield and defense underscores a shifting managerial imperative: tactical structure must now compensate for squad attrition. When clubs cannot out-spend their rivals, they must out-organize them.

Simultaneously, La Liga is experiencing its own structural realignments. Real Madrid's relentless ability to grind out results—exemplified by Federico Valverde's deflected 95th-minute winner against Celta Vigo—has maintained tremendous domestic pressure on Barcelona. Yet Barcelona's internal workload management is beginning to fray. Under Hansi Flick, the Blaugrana have deployed a demanding high-line, high-intensity pressing system that delivered early-season dominance but has visibly drained squad energy reserves. As the Champions League knockout phases loom, Barcelona's margin for error has evaporated, placing enormous scrutiny on their physical conditioning ahead of trips to hostile English venues.

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid's identity is undergoing one of the most fascinating transformations in modern sports. Diego Simeone, historically the world's foremost architect of rigid defensive low blocks, has overseen a transition toward high-variance, multi-goal spectacles. Recent matchlines featuring 3-3 draws with Brugge, 4-2 victories over Espanyol, and a 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona demonstrate an Atleti side embracing attacking spontaneity. Supported by a deep bench featuring Griezmann, Nico González, Sørloth, Julián Álvarez, and Ademola Lookman, Simeone has evolved from a defensive purist into a manager managing an embarrassed wealth of attacking options.

Lastly, the modern media landscape has reshaped how domestic football is consumed globally. The FA Cup, traditionally celebrated for its romantic grassroots mythology, is now embedded within international entertainment economics. Wrexham's rise as a global docuseries phenomenon has transformed third-tier English cup matches into high-stakes commercial broadcasts. As host Ryan Bailey and analyst Taylor Rockwell noted, the packaging of football narratives—whether framing Wrexham as "America's Team" or tracking international superstars across continental leagues—now directly influences fan engagement, broadcast priorities, and editorial discourse.

3. Deep-Dive Thematic Breakdown

3.1 The Milan Derby: Asymmetrical Rotations, Structural Compression, and the Illusion of Control

The tactical mechanics of AC Milan's 1-0 victory over Inter Milan warrant granular examination. The decisive moment arrived via a meticulously constructed sequence in the first half. Midfielders Youssouf Fofana and Luka Modrić executed an intricate positional rotation through the central axis, drawing Inter's midfield line out of alignment. Fofana then spotted the deep perimeter run of Pervis Estupiñán, delivering an incisive pass that allowed the Ecuadorian lateral back to finish past Yann Sommer at the near post. This sequence highlighted Milan's early-game offensive fluidity: rather than relying on static positional width, they utilized dynamic central rotations to unleash late runners from deep positions.

Equally intriguing was the out-of-possession deployment of Fikayo Tomori. Listed on team sheets as a standard right center-back, Tomori operated with complete tactical freedom, functioning as an asymmetrical hybrid back. During build-up phases, Tomori pushed aggressively into the right half-space, linking play with Milan's wide attackers and generating localized numerical overloads that Inter's defensive block failed to track. Out of possession, he seamlessly dropped back into a four-man defensive line, demonstrating exceptional mobility and spatial awareness. Ruthven compared this hybrid role to the flexible usage of Rico Lewis or Myles Lewis-Skelly at Manchester City, emphasizing how modern central defenders are tasked with spatial overload creation.

Once Milan secured their 1-0 lead, the match transitioned into a classic study of structural compression. Milan abandoned their aggressive high press and established a rigid 4-4-2 low block. Central defenders Strahinja Pavlović and Koni De Winter produced standout defensive performances, successfully repelling the physical threat of Sebastiano Esposito. With Inter missing both Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram due to squad rotation and fitness management, Esposito was left isolated against Milan's physical center-back duo. Even the 60th-minute introduction of Denzel Dumfries failed to unlock Milan's defensive vault, as Pavlović and De Winter repeatedly cleared wide deliveries and dominated defensive aerial duels inside the eighteen-yard box.

The post-match statistical ledger presented a classic optical illusion: Inter held higher possession percentage, generated more total shots, and recorded superior expected goals. Yet as Ruthven forcefully argued, Inter never truly threatened to equalize. Their possession was sterile and horizontal, shuttling harmlessly from flank to flank before culminating in desperate, low-probability crosses into a densely populated penalty box. Christian Pulisic's 84-minute shift exemplified Milan's structural commitment; while his offensive output was modest (three chances created, nine touches in the opening half-hour), his tireless defensive tracking along the right touchline preserved Milan's spatial compactness, cementing a textbook execution of "getting Allegri'd."

3.2 Midfield Stagnation and Individual Decay: The Nicolò Barella Problem

A central talking point of Graham Ruthven's tactical critique centered on the ongoing performance trajectory of Nicolò Barella. Over the past three seasons, Barella has been widely acclaimed as one of Europe's premier box-to-box midfielders, celebrated for his high-octane pressing, ball-carrying dynamism, and clutch playmaking in tight spaces. However, Ruthven asserted that Barella has experienced a noticeable, multi-season regression that was starkly exposed by Milan's defensive setup.

Against Milan's compact low block, Barella's traditional strengths were rendered ineffective. Deprived of open grass to drive into, the Italian midfielder struggled to find creative passing lanes, often settling for safe lateral redistribution or delayed decisions on the ball. His inability to dictate tempo or execute line-breaking passes through Milan's central midfield pair severely constrained Inter's offensive fluidity. Rather than acting as the catalytic engine of Inzaghi's system, Barella appeared lethargic and structurally predictable, contributing to Inter's inability to break down settled defensive shapes.

This regression highlights a broader structural challenge facing Inter Milan. When opposing sides refuse to engage Inzaghi's team in high-pressing duels and instead concede territorial dominance, Inter's reliance on midfield movement to break down low blocks becomes paramount. If Barella cannot reclaim his elite form as a dynamic half-space driver, Inter risk becoming overly reliant on wide wing-back volume crossing. Against disciplined central defenders like Pavlović and De Winter, that tactical reliance quickly degrades into low-efficiency football, explaining why Inter have dropped maximum points in both Milan derbies this season despite commanding statistical leads.

3.3 Tactical Metamorphosis in Madrid: Simeone’s High-Variance Renaissance

In contrast to the pragmatic low-block display in Milan, Atletico Madrid's 3-2 victory over Real Sociedad provided compelling evidence of Diego Simeone's ongoing tactical transformation. Historically synonymous with defensive conservatism, low possession shares, and masterclasses in 1-0 gamesmanship, Simeone's modern Atletico team has morphed into one of Spain's most explosive, high-variance attacking outfits. The panel analyzed this shift, pointing to recent results—including a 3-3 draw with Brugge, a 4-2 win against Espanyol, and a 4-0 dismantling of Barcelona—as proof that Atleti have fully embraced offensive spontaneity.

At the center of this metamorphosis sits Antoine Griezmann. Introduced off the bench, the French maestro demonstrated why he remains one of global football's most intelligent spatial architects. Griezmann took complete control of the match, dictating tempo and bending the opposition's defensive structure to his will. The defining moment of the contest arrived when Griezmann received a pass in the penalty area and, with supreme composure and disguise, executed an exquisite backheel assist into the path of Nico González. Rockwell praised Griezmann's unshakeable swagger, noting that his ability to act as an instant game-changer off the bench provides Atletico with an elite psychological edge.

Nico González's performance was equally electrifying. The winger scored twice, including a bullet header and the match-winner, embarking on mesmerizing dribbling runs that Ruthven hyperbolically likened to "prime Lionel Messi." Furthermore, the panel highlighted the functional evolution of striker Alexander Sørloth. Simeone has successfully streamlined Sørloth's responsibilities, deploying him in a role mirroring Erling Haaland: minimizing his link-up touches while maximizing his aerial dominance and penalty-box finishing. Coupled with Johnny Cardoso's regular entry in the 61st minute as a specialized defensive "closer," Atletico now possess an ideal operational balance between wild attacking variance and tactical game-state management.

3.4 European Vulnerabilities: Barcelona’s Energy Deficit Ahead of St James’ Park

Barcelona's 1-0 victory over Athletic Club maintained their four-point advantage atop La Liga, but the performance raised significant alarm bells across the Total Soccer Show panel. The match was decided by another piece of individual magic from teenage phenom Lamine Yamal, who cut inside from the right flank to unleash a signature curler into the top corner. However, Athletic Club recorded higher expected goals, generated superior high-value scoring chances, and repeatedly sliced through Barcelona's high defensive line, only to be denied by exceptional goaltending from Wojciech Szczęsny.

Ruthven offered a sharp diagnostic assessment of Hansi Flick's side, identifying clear indicators of physical and mental exhaustion. Barcelona's high-pressing intensity—the hallmark of Flick's early-season success—dropped off sharply in the second half. The defensive line retreated deeper, gaps between the midfield and defensive blocks widened, and Athletic Club easily bypassed Barcelona's initial counter-press. While individual quality continues to paper over these structural cracks in domestic competition, Ruthven warned that such lethargy will prove fatal in European play.

With a monumental Champions League clash against Newcastle United at St James' Park looming, Barcelona face a severe physical test. St James' Park represents one of Europe's most intense, intimidating acoustic environments, where Eddie Howe's Newcastle thrive on physical duels, high-octane transition play, and relentless pressing. If Barcelona display the same sluggishness in Tyneside that plagued them against Athletic Club, Newcastle's athletic midfield and aggressive crowd will simply overrun them. The panel concluded that Barcelona have reached a defining crossroads in their season: to transform domestic league leaders into genuine Champions League contenders, Flick must engineer a second wind of physical conditioning.

3.5 Bundesliga Oscillations and the Narrative Packaging of Modern Cup Football

The panel concluded their tactical sweep with an analysis of Bundesliga action and domestic cup storytelling. In Germany, Bayern Munich demonstrated ruthless offensive depth, storming to a 4-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach despite the absence of talismanic striker Harry Kane. The result underscored Bayern's tactical flexibility under Vincent Kompany, proving they can generate high-volume scoring outcomes through collective midfield pressing and wide rotations even when their primary goalscorer is rested.

Simultaneously, Bayer Leverkusen engaged in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Freiburg, showcased by Alejandro Grimaldo's extraordinary dead-ball mastery. Rockwell delivered a glowing evaluation of Grimaldo, declaring him the premier free-kick taker in world football today. Analyzing Grimaldo's technique, Rockwell marveled at how the Spanish full-back generates unnatural whip, dip, and velocity, bypassing defensive walls and draft excluders with mathematical precision. In addition, RB Leipzig's dramatic clash with Augsburg highlighted the fine margins of top-flight football, featuring Kevin Schlotterbeck's penalty miss and Jean-Philippe Krasso's physical goal sequence following defensive errors from youthful talent like Nnamdi Collins.

Intertwined with these tactical assessments was a lively debate on the media economics of modern cup competitions. The FA Cup weekend saw Chelsea narrowly escape an embarrassing exit against Wrexham—a club dubbed "America's Team" due to its Hollywood ownership and widely watched docuseries. Ryan Bailey and Taylor Rockwell explored how entertainment narratives now intersect with competitive football. While traditional purists may scoff at Wrexham's global branding, the commercial reality is undeniable: media docuseries, Hollywood star power, and international storytelling have elevated third-tier English fixtures into global broadcast events, forever altering how football media publications analyze domestic cup weekends.

4. Speaker Perspectives & Analytical Contrast

The dynamic between host Ryan Bailey, tactical analyst Graham Ruthven, and sports culture specialist Taylor Rockwell created a rich multidimensional discourse throughout the episode. Each panelist approached the weekend's slate from a distinct methodological viewpoint, providing a thorough synthesis of tactical mechanics, roster construction, and media narrative. The contrasting analytical frameworks enriched the discussion, transforming match recaps into an authoritative audit of global football trends.

Graham Ruthven functioned as the tactical pragmatist and structural auditor. His analytical methodology relies heavily on game-state dynamics, expected metrics versus empirical realities, and spatial mechanics. Ruthven was the architect of the "getting Allegri'd" thesis regarding the Milan derby, correctly identifying that Inter's superior xG and shot count were deceptive indicators that masked a complete lack of central penetration. Furthermore, Ruthven demonstrated a keen eye for individual performance trajectories, offering unvarnished critiques such as Barella's multi-season regression while issuing stern tactical warnings regarding Barcelona's impending European trip to Newcastle United. His analysis consistently prioritizes structural organization over superficial highlights.

Taylor Rockwell provided the macro-economic and roster-assembly counterweight. Rockwell excels at evaluating match outcomes through the lens of transfer dynamics, squad depth, and emotional momentum. In analyzing AC Milan's victory, Rockwell immediately highlighted the underlying financial context, questioning how Inter failed to dominate a Rossoneri side that had sold foundational pillars like Reijnders, Thiaw, and Theo Hernández. Rockwell also brought meticulous detail to individual player breakdowns—such as dissecting Alejandro Grimaldo's free-kick physics or evaluating Christian Pulisic's unheralded defensive work rate. His perspective bridges the gap between on-field tactics and executive suite decision-making.

Ryan Bailey served as the master anchor and media orchestrator, expertly framing tactical discussions within broader industry narratives. Bailey ensured the conversation addressed not only tactical schemes but also the commercial and cultural impact of the sport. His management of the FA Cup segment—framing Wrexham's near-upset of Chelsea through the lens of Hollywood docuseries storytelling and global broadcast appeal—highlighted the media mechanics governing modern sports consumption. Bailey's sharp framing allowed the panel to navigate seamlessly between granular pitch analysis and macro-level industry discourse.

Panelist Primary Analytical Lens Core Thesis / Focus Key Tactical or Editorial Observation
Graham Ruthven Tactical Structure & Game-State Mechanics Spatial compression and defensive organization dictate outcomes over sterile possession. Inter got "Allegri'd" by Milan; Barella is in multi-season regression; Barcelona will be overrun at Newcastle if sluggish.
Taylor Rockwell Roster Economics & Individual Technique Squad attrition must be offset by structural clarity; elite individual execution alters game states. Milan won despite losing Reijnders, Thiaw, and Theo; Grimaldo is world-class at dead-balls; Griezmann's swagger elevates Atleti.
Ryan Bailey Media Economics & Storytelling Architecture Football narratives and commercial branding drive global audience engagement alongside tactics. Wrexham ("America's Team") illustrates the power of docuseries storytelling in reshaping traditional cup coverage.

5. Strategic & Industry Implications

The analytical threads woven throughout this episode of Total Soccer Show point to three major macro-trends currently shaping the global football industry. Understanding these structural shifts provides essential context for executives, tactical analysts, and longform journalists evaluating the future trajectory of the sport.

1. The Resurgence of Game-State Realism Over Positional Dogma: For over a decade, elite European football was dominated by positional play principles—high possession, aggressive counter-pressing, and territorial siege tactics. However, the performance of AC Milan against Inter demonstrates the rising efficacy of game-state realism. Managers are increasingly recognizing that conceding sterile possession to possession-heavy teams, while protecting central zones via compact 4-4-2 or 5-3-2 low blocks, represents a highly sustainable counter-strategy. As expected goals models become more sophisticated, analysts recognize that 1.5 xG accumulated over twenty low-probability perimeter shots is far less dangerous than a single high-probability transition sequence. The ability to manipulate game states after taking an early lead will remain a primary tactical weapon against dogmatic possession systems.

2. Economic Asymmetry and Asset Extraction in Serie A: The transfer context raised by Taylor Rockwell underscores a permanent structural reality in European football: Serie A has become a feeder league for Premier League wealth and Saudi state-backed capital. When AC Milan lose Reijnders to Manchester City, Thiaw to Newcastle United, and Theo Hernández to Al-Hilal in rapid succession, it reflects a broader economic reality where Italian clubs cannot match international wage structures. Consequently, Serie A clubs must develop superior tactical recruitment frameworks and coaching structures to remain competitive. Italian football's survival as an elite spectacle relies on tactical innovation compensating for financial extraction.

3. Content Packaging and the Globalization of Fan Identity: The discussion surrounding Wrexham and the FA Cup highlights the evolving economics of sports media. In the modern era, fan acquisition is no longer strictly geographic; it is driven by narrative storytelling, docuseries access, and digital content distribution. Wrexham's branding as "America's Team" demonstrates how non-traditional clubs can leverage media narratives to construct global fanbases that rival established top-flight brands. For legacy institutions, the lesson is clear: tactical excellence on the pitch must be paired with sophisticated narrative packaging off it to capture global market share in an increasingly saturated media ecosystem.

6. Looking Ahead: Unresolved Questions & Next Milestones

As the European football season enters its decisive spring sprint, the tactical revelations established during this podcast episode set up several critical storylines that will define the coming months. Analysts and journalists must monitor key performance indicators across multiple leagues to determine whether the trends identified by the panel persist or pivot.

In Serie A, the central question revolves around Inter Milan's adaptability. Can Simone Inzaghi introduce greater central dynamism into his midfield build-up to prevent opposing managers from repeating Milan's low-block blueprint? Specifically, tracking Nicolò Barella's central progression metrics, key passes, and successful dribbles over the next six matchdays will provide definitive empirical evidence regarding his suspected regression. Meanwhile, AC Milan must prove whether their tactical pragmatism can bridge the seven-point gap at the summit of Serie A, or if squad depth limitations following major summer departures will eventually catch up to them in the domestic run-in.

In La Liga and Europe, eyes turn immediately to Barcelona's physical conditioning and tactical line ahead of their Champions League voyage to St James' Park. If Hansi Flick fails to restore his squad's high-pressing energy, Newcastle United's athletic midfield could deliver a devastating reality check to Spain's league leaders. Concurrently, Diego Simeone's high-variance experiment at Atletico Madrid faces its ultimate trial: can Atleti maintain their thrilling offensive output while stabilizing their defensive transitions, or will their newly discovered attacking spontaneity prove too volatile in high-stakes knockout football?

Finally, the continued convergence of media storytelling and elite performance will remain a central theme for global analytics publications like Football Moments. As clubs navigate financial pressures, tactical counter-revolutions, and shifting fan dynamics, the ability to synthesize deep tactical breakdown with macro-industry context will remain the hallmark of authoritative sports journalism.

Welcome to the Total Soccer Show weekend review! The gap at the top of Serie A is now slightly leaner. The AC Milan were victorious in the Dada Bidela Madonina, a stupid Yan was the man who was the hero at San Ciro, but the rosinaries chances of winning the title might be somewhere around zero. In the FA Cup, we so nearly had the dream of Chelsea being knocked out by America's team. Arsenal squeaked past the league one side while Port Vale delivered Sunderland a blow to their pride, and in Spain and Germany the usual suspects at the top won, while in France PSG were devoured by a following baller gum. My name's Ryan Bailey, joining me today, hello Taylor Rockwell, how are you? Uh, I was doing splendidly, then the America's team came out and now I'm just doing well. How about yourself, Ryan? Doing great. Big fan of America's team over here. We love the Disney doc. I pulled me in, man, that game pulled me in, I had like a begrudging nod of respect for when it seemed like they had equalized late and when they didn't I thought, is that the perfect ending to this game in a weird dramatic, like narrative twist sort of way? I feel like it was, you can, you can dislike America's team all you like, Taylor, but you can't doubt those script writers. I like the US women. I'm fine with them. Okay. Very good. America's team. They can not well on the team. Well, this isn't the highlander, they can be more than one Taylor. Greg Rothen, hello, how are you? Hello, Ryan Bailey, I'm good. That's it. Yeah. Think so. So, sign a, sign a British person that everyone thinks is American, so Hugh Laurie as well. He's playing for Sterling Albion. Yeah, Christian Bell. Get him in there too. Yeah. Not that. You should have Sydney Sweeney by the team is the answer, Greg. Okay. Okay. Okay. Just for, just for the algorithm or just some popular American buyers team makes it popular. That's the formula. Okay. I don't hate it. Yeah. There you go. There you go. Solutions. I'm here. I'm here. I'm not, I'm not a problem guy. I'm a solutions guy. Let's start our journey today at San Siro. Shall we wear Milan? Got a 1-0 win over Inter in the Derby Dilemma Donina. The gap at the top close to just seven points. Oh, you can taste that title race right now, can't you? A stupid young with the great near post goal to settle this one. Graham, what do we make of this one? Another win for Milan in this Derby, despite not having the balance of power in Milan at the moment. Yeah, Inter will be second Milan, because they also lost the first Madanina of the season 1-0 in a very similar manner when they also got allegrared. And that's what happened here. Inter had more of the ball, certainly in the second half. They had more shots, more big chances, and higher expected goals. A lot of that was through kind of like accumulation, right, because it, for me anyway, I'll speak for myself. I never felt like Inter were going to find an equalizer in this game, never really felt like they were battering down the door. And so I went to back to my notes from that first Derby of the season. And it was a lot of the same stuff that Milan were able to do against Inter in this game as well. And in this game, and the last one I thought Milan were clearer than in their game plan, they got the lead in the game. That gave them the game state advantage, and that allowed them to lean even more into that plan, into that plan. I do wonder what might have happened had Inter had equalized. Would Milan have been able to change that game state again? Would they have been able to snap into a different approach with some of the changes that they made, but they never needed to and they got over the line at 1-0 in this title race. It's still alive. I mean, speaking for the neutral, I don't really know how much faith I put in Milan to close the gap further than what was at seven points after this game, but it does keep it a little bit more interesting because had it gone to what like 10 points, that would have effectively have been over. So we can keep talking about this cadetto race for a little while longer. Yeah, it's a strange one. I agree with everything Graham has said. Like I do think Inter is still in the title, but if they play like this, I think that less so. And then you realize that they were on the run that they were on. They've been in exceptional form in the league at least until they play another team for Milan that apparently it's a problem. So I don't really think this ends up derailing anything for Inter, but they were just really not fun. And this was the type of game that we, for a while, expected from Syria when you'd get those big top of the table clashes. It felt like there was so much at stake plus the Darby aspect of it meant that you'd get more of a standoff as a fair. And I thought Milan were less state office. I thought they were pretty aggressive in their press to start the game. I thought they really disrupted Inter and made them uncomfortable. Then they get the goal and it sort of felt like they, especially the second half kind of relaxed into a 4-4-2, a very disciplined defensive 4-4-2 and invited Inter forward and invited them to find a way through. And only in the final, maybe five minutes of regulation, if that plus extra time did Inter really start to feel like they were throwing things, like throwing the kitchen sink, loving the ball in the box, trying to make something happen. But even then, it was really slow movement from one side to the other and then back and then sort of putting your foot on the ball and looking again and then maybe playing a sort of half crossing that gets cleared and it just wasn't that sort of all hands-on deck defensive performance from Milan because it wasn't really necessary for Inter. Yeah, they did a really good job, AC Milan in the second half of, as you say Taylor, forcing Inter to go sideways and out wide and then they defended the penalty box really well. I thought Pavlovich had one of his best games for Milan that I've seen had obviously was up against Esposito. We should mention that Inter were without both Lataro Martinez and Marcus Turam and then Denzel Dumfries is only fitting off to come off the bench for the final 30 minutes. So across the board there, there was a weaker Inter Milan team than otherwise might have been the case. But nonetheless, Esposito is a handful, certainly from a physical point of view. Inter were putting a lot of crosses into the box, certainly in the final phase of this match and Pavlovich. As it is, Connie Deventer as well, the Belgian defender alongside him, I thought also did a really good job of kind of repelling everything that came at them in that second half. But the first half, I thought was a really good mix of Milan being really compact defensively, but then also they had a lot of nice rotations through the middle, like for the goal when there's a nice rotation between Fafana and I think it's Maudrich who in this game is just absolute class, as you would expect. They have a really nice rotation, Fafana then picks out the past Estpunan who was making a really good run from deep. And that was the other thing, Milan were getting players forwards in that first half. They were running past Inter from the back. There was one attack on 42 minutes, I took it down to my notes. When there's like a cross field pass into the box and it's Tomori who's up from the back and he can accussions the ball into I think it's Fafana who's then making a run from midfield. So it just felt the best moments in this game from Milan were when they were getting those runners forward and they had a nice balance in that first half. So I think even a lot of the numbers favor Inter in terms of the game plan and how they executed. I think Milan were clearly ahead of what Inter were able to do in this match. Great. If you had to, what position would you say Tomori was playing because I've seen it listed as right center back. I've seen it listed as right back, but to your point, especially in the second half, he is so advanced at times in the half space normally on the right, but like really high up there, really getting involved in possession. That is not a thing I usually expect from him and I kept having to check my notes to make sure that I hadn't missed something or that he wasn't a differently named player. Yeah, I think out of possession, he was clearly part of that back line as the, the, the flex back, I guess on the right side of that defensive line, but kind of had the freedom we see. I'm trying to make a comparison of my head here quickly like I guess sort of freedom that man said he will often give Nico rightly or we've seen like previously with Miles Lewis Skelly, he maybe didn't have the sort of ball carrying that those two players have, but in terms of the positions he would get into, yeah, he's definitely had the freedom to get forward and that then created overloads that enter were never really able to deal with in that first half. The game state sort of shifted in the second half, but in that first half, I thought my line were really quick. Good. Taylor, Christian, policy, vibe check had some involvement in this game. I think he had a few chances, created three chances, created on a shot off target says what did we feel about our captain fine, I think I mean, given the performance and, and I think the game state and the way they were able to see out this results Milan, I think he has a somewhat unremarkable, but good enough 84 minutes he's in there for quite some time. I think he's doing a good bit of work off the ball to kind of make sure the defensive structure is sound on the ball, I mean, he's, he has a few dribbles that I think people have quite well, he gets a good number of touches, creates some chances, I don't think it's like a huge XG game for anything like that or expected assist or anything along those lines. So I think overall, fine, if unremarkable, would have liked to see some sort of like goal sheet contribution such as life. Yeah, certainly not as most involved game from Milan, I checked after 30 minutes because there was a sequence where he came really deep and I went, oh, Christian Pilsich, I haven't seen him for basically any of the match up until that moment, and he'd had nine touches of the ball up until that point. So that wasn't ideal, but I felt like the second half sort of suited him on the break and actually a couple of Milan's best moments on the counter came through Pilsich. There was one in particular where Pilsich got running against Mikitarian and he was in real trouble and Pilsich's execution in the pass out to Leaou was just maybe slightly behind Leaou, he could have used a runner on the right side to maybe spread out that inner defence even further, but yeah, he was fine without being outstanding, I thought. Go on off. Graham, this Derby three seasons ago was a Champions League semi-final. What's the state of play with the Derby Dilemina in terms of sort of quality? Where's it gone since that point, do we think, is it still a top, top, top, top European game? It's certainly in terms of like the culture and the societal significance and I think the Derby Dilemina, excuse me, is always like in the UK, it's on TNT sports, one and they put the other games on behind us. I think that says something, it still has that importance. I know that's the true measure. In terms of the quality, I think both of these teams are going through a phase right now. I'm not entirely sure what were Milan are, it's a little bit difficult to gauge them without European football, without Champions League football because obviously the last season was so bad that I heard Allegri saying that merely finishing the top four and getting back into the Champions League is a success for them this season, I would broadly agree with that. And then the two Bodo defeats does raise a question about where Inter are at the moment as well and even though they look pretty much nailed on even after this result for the Skireto. Still feels like a team that is sort of coasting on the Enzagi era, Kev has done a better job of kind of continuing that than I might have anticipated ahead of this year, but still feels like they're going to have to transition into something else and you look at that midfield with, you know, McIntyre and then a couple other players that are getting on a little bit as well. Barela as a player, I put this in my notes, I feel like Barela has regressed the last couple seasons and I thought this game sort of exposed that where the engine is still there in Nicola Barela and he's obviously still involved with, he was often the one dropping deep into the back three to pick up the ball and move it forward, he's still very good at that. But Inter needed a little bit more, they needed to be more nimble in breaking down Milan and I feel like a couple of scenes ago, Barela might have had that in the locker and we haven't really seen that player for a little while. So it does feel like that's a team that is in need of like reinvigoration, whether it happens between now and the end of the season or for the start next season. Yeah, Graham, that was really telling to me when Barela comes off and Frateza comes on and the commentators were talking about how Frateza is just more capable of providing the like energetic spark that Inter might need than Barela. And that is a thing that I used to think of as of Barela as like being a sort of just like tireless runner and worker who was also very good on the ball and could kind of thread the needle, find those options that maybe other players couldn't with that midfield three with him and McIntyre and Jellyn Oluv that felt like just so difficult to press, so difficult to win the ball off of less so these days. And I think from Milan after last season, the outgoing is especially when you lose Rinders to Man City, Malik Tial to Newcastle, Teo Hernandez even to Al Halal just feels like there are big names that were in that team that you could sort of look to in these type of big games to have an elevated performance or to kind of have been there before and push the team on to new levels. And I agree with Graham. I think it's just sort of a rebuilding, figuring things out season for Milan. Successful as it has been so far and for Inter, it feels kind of the same. So this match in the end feels kind of representative of where both clubs are. Yeah. We do have a 40 year old central midfielder from Milan who's still quite good by Taila to be fair. Yeah. Unless unless you foul him and he doesn't get the call in which case he reverts to 22 year old moderate who gets very, very feisty and very, very angry, very, very quickly that happened at least twice in this game. What did the end run? He gets the card. I cannot get enough of moderate, she's outside of the boot passes. Oh, yeah. I was the Kylo Ren meme watching this game. More, more, another one, no, one, another one. It's just just one of the most enjoyable things to watch and you mean soccer. Were you led to believe when you were younger Graham that the Adidas Predator boot would allow you to do that better when it had those sort of bits on that? Yeah, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, reading of this performance was that they were able to go to San Mamas, which is traditionally one of the most difficult away venues in La Liga, they were able to play well below par, and well below their normal energy levels, and still control the majority of the game. Juangar Sia did have to come up with a few good saves, there was one from Inyaki Williams, and another one from Sanset, which was a good, close range save, and Athletic Club, they did get the higher HG in this match, but the flow of the game was controlled by Barcelona, and then as you can reference Ryan Lemony-Mal pops up with another outrageous goal, as is customary now to decide the game, and that was that, but yeah, Barcelona, they have Newcastle, as I mentioned in the previous segment, from the Newcastle side of things, they're with St. James's part this week in the Champions League, and they cannot afford to be this lethargic in that game otherwise Newcastle, and that atmosphere will just run over it, and I think we are reaching a real kind of crossroads in Barcelona season of I think they're going to win the league relatively comfortably, but if we're looking at a special season, they're going to have to find a second win, because there are signs that are starting to tire a little bit. I saw a video this morning of Barcelona players arriving at Newcastle, and I think it's a recommendation grab, and it's like quite a quite old building and they're saying, well, it's the effect of it, is this like where Harry Potter lives? I do love how everyone foreign who visits a British building that was built before like the 1900s compares it to Hogwarts, but we'll take what we can get. We can indeed. We can indeed. Very good. Barcelona are four points clear of Ramadrid at the top of the league, a Ramadrid with the two-unwin at Celtivego on Friday, Federico Verdes heavily deflected. We're not making the difference in the 95th minutes squeezing out the win for Ramadrid there. Let me get on this weekend, Graham. So they beat Real Sostad 3-2 at home, of course, Pellegrino Matarazos, Real Sostad, and I'd let he have become quite an entertaining team these past few weeks, because there has been the three-three draw against Bruges, the four-two game against Espanol, then the four-one win and the second leg against Bruges, the four-no-win over Barcelona, and then the subsequent hanging on for dear life in the second leg. So they're any good, because they're definitely isn't the classic sort of Diego Simeone control and defensive strength that you would expect from an athletic team. But on the other side of the pitch, they've got some seriously good attacking options right now, and two of them made the difference in this game, Griezmann, who still, as we're talking about him, potentially making the move to central four or the summer, still at this age, and at this point of his career, gives athletic players who can take a grip of a game and bend it to his will in the way that Griezmann can, and that's what he did coming off the bench in this game. And then the other one was Niko Gonzalez, who scored twice, including the winner, and all of a sudden turned into prime Messi with some of his dribbling, and he's largely been a bit of a disappointment Niko Gonzalez for athletic. But there's quality there, and we saw that in the final phase of this match. This definitely doesn't happen every time Niko Gonzalez comes off the bench, to offer along with Lookman and Soloth and Alvarez and Griezmann, and they're looking really good as an attacking force right now. It's not quite blasphemous, but Graham, how are you going to praise Antoine Griezmann and not talk about what he did for the assist for the Niko Gonzalez goal game? Yeah, the back here, are you kidding me? That's probably the thing that it's so good. It's so cheeky and just full of confidence, and it encapsulates your point so well, that at a time when Adleti needed that difference maker, but just also needed somebody who was like, I got this, no big deal. In comes Griezmann for a great little combination. It's a great dribble, solo dribble by Niko to kind of start the move he finds Griezmann. Griezmann was just a perfectly weighted, perfectly disguised back heel to set up the finish. That goal was immense. The header from Niko as well, the winner, the way he powers it home, how high up he gets, but the direction he gets on it plus the velocity. This is just a really fun game. Another sort of inspiring win from Adleti, Graham is totally correct that it's not the kind of controlled performance. It's not them just being resolute in their defense. Obviously they can see too, and they do so in fairly quick fashion both times, but I think that they end up getting the win. They're able to see it out. They bring in some of the plays they do off the bench. It's just another reminder that there is plenty of talent to this Adleti team, plenty of grit, which makes me then ask Graham, did we once again see the Johnny roll, Graham with Johnny Cardosta coming in in like the 61st minute, he gets about a half, but it felt like him kind of coming in, especially once they take the lead, just sort of get stuck in, make sure nothing happens, be smart against the ball, and I feel like he did find enough where he gets the assist to the assist as well. Yeah, I mean, he's the shut down the game option for Adleti, and that's why I still hold some stock because I feel like the US might need a player like that at the World Cup, so yeah, it feels like semi-only. Maybe a month ago it felt like semi-only it was a bit of a crossroads. People were saying, including myself, it felt like the beginning of the end for him. I might have been a bit hasty in that because he's figuring out some players and it's squad. Who at the moment is playing like, and this is a sentence that would have sounded ridiculous a few weeks ago, is playing like Erling Howland with the role that he has, that he's taken up for Adleti. It's so unfair that Norway, not only did they have one, they've now got two of these gold robots. But semi-only has figured out you don't really want Sorloth to have lots of touches of the ball, you want him in the box, get on the end of crosses, and finishing opportunities. And that's what Sorloth is doing at the moment. It's about watching to a team at the moment. I'm making a, it's like appointment viewing to watch them right now. Graham, who's been on the hot tea about to be fired more? Eddie Howell or Diego Simeone? I mean, so they're able to have like an actual flame, that's too dark actually. They actually heat the seat up. Oh boy. I think it's Eddie Howell right anyway. Regardless of the methodology. Okay. The third with 54 points after this weekend. Let's finally, Taylor. Last but not least, have a look at the Bundesliga show. We buy Munich with a 4-1 win against 10 members you're much and glad back. Without Harry Kane, they're still doing the goals of that Harry Kane. And then it can't be stopped. That's like, by under so good and win these games so comfortably, on the table in terms of scoring. But yeah, another very comfortable weekend for Bayern. Less comfortable for Gladbach, who continue their very poor run of form. They are not in a great position and that's putting it mildly. But this was a really fun weekend in the Bundesliga. You had Freiburg and Levy Kusen playing to a three-all draw. Alex Gremaldo might be the best free kick-taker on the planet. I think, at least presently, there is a David Beckham level of like, he is going to put this on frame or put it in the back of the net one of the other. I don't know how he gets this free kick up and down the way he does. There is a wall. There is a draft excluder. There is a Freiburg player running to the back post to cover the back post. Then running back forward. They tried everything. And he still was able to put this in perfectly. A great performance from him. A great performance from Koffani in the scouting network. If I had scouting reports ready, it would have been a good point for Levy Kusen though they would have preferred more to move further up the table. Leipzig and Alex Berg had an interesting game themselves. Kevin Schlotterbeck takes his first ever Bundesliga penalty and misses. And then Jim Monday with another great goal. He basically rides Schlotterbeck's physicality. And then ends up using that against him. Kind of knocks him off the ball to score to get the win. Banks, I should note, Nokai Banks plays in this game. Makes a pretty bad error that gets him a yellow card. He has a few more sort of moments when he dives in and then has to concede a foul or like basically dives in and fouls somebody. And then also in the lead up to this goal over pursues a kind of loose aerial duel and doesn't win it. But he leaves Dio Monday open to launch this kind of quick attack. There is cover there as I mentioned in the previous video. I'm not sure if that's the case. I'm not sure if that's the case. I'm not sure if that's the case. I'm not sure if that's the case.
