The Special One is Back and the Bernabeu is Burning

Pull up a bar stool, crack open a cold lager, and let’s talk about the absolute circus that has become the European transfer market. Just when you thought the summer of 2026 couldn’t get any weirder, Jose Mourinho walked back into Real Madrid like he owns the place. With Xabi Alonso packing his bags in January, Florentino Perez decided what this team really needed was more drama, more touchline tantrums, and a tactical plan that belongs in a history museum.

And boy, is the Portuguese mastermind delivering on the drama. The ink isn’t even dry on his new contract, and Mourinho is already trying to run the club’s crown jewel, Vinicius Junior, out of town.

Vinicius is under contract until June 2027, but contract negotiations have stalled because his camp feels Real Madrid is lowballing him. Instead of fixing the issue, Mourinho has reportedly given Perez the green light to sell the Brazilian winger to fund a move for Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland.

The €250m Question

Selling Vinicius to finance a move for Haaland is like trading your perfectly tuned sports car for a massive monster truck that only goes in a straight line. Sure, the monster truck crushes everything in its path, but good luck steering it through a tight corner.

Mourinho’s grand design is to have Haaland as a pure number nine and give Kylian Mbappe complete freedom to roam on the wings. Meanwhile, the rest of the team will be expected to defend like rabid dogs to cover for them. It is absolute tactical madness that will probably end in tears, media rants, and a dressing room mutiny by November.

But that hasn’t stopped the rumors from heating up. Real Madrid’s hierarchy is apparently salivating over recent comments from Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge Haaland, who gave a heavy hint about his son’s future. Speaking to DAZN ES, Haaland Senior said:

"Real Madrid move? He’s very happy at Manchester City and has a long contract. We’re waiting for the new season… but anyone would want to play for Madrid. You never know what can happen in football."

City’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, is desperate to keep the Norwegian goal machine, especially since Haaland is tied down to a colossal contract that runs until June 2034. To get a deal done, Real Madrid would have to cough up a world-record fee of €250m.

Even for a club as wealthy as Madrid, that is serious cash. As Football365 reported, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has already poured cold water on a move happening immediately. Romano stated:

"I am telling you Haaland to Real Madrid this summer – no. But Haaland to Real Madrid one day, who knows? Because Haaland is not excluding the possibility one day, again, not in December 2026 to go to Real Madrid. So, it’s something that in the mind of Erling Haaland is considered as a possibility for the future."

Michael Carrick’s Midfield Rebuild at Old Trafford

If you think Madrid is the only place experiencing a shake-up, let’s take a look at Manchester United. Michael Carrick is quietly building something interesting at Old Trafford, and he has zero time for passengers.

Casemiro has finally departed the club this summer after making 160 appearances, and Carrick is wastefully letting the deadwood clear out. To replace the Brazilian veteran, United is closing in on a £35million deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

Replacing Casemiro

But Carrick isn’t stopping there. He wants Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni to partner Ederson in what could be the most physical midfield in the Premier League.

United officials are reportedly preparing to fly to Spain to discuss a potential deal. Mourinho has apparently made up his mind on the 26-year-old French midfielder, and he is willing to sell if the price is right.

Former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly has already given the transfer his seal of approval. Desaility pointed to Raphael Varane’s successful 2021 move to Old Trafford as a reason why Tchouameni should take the plunge. Speaking to sportscasting.com, the ex-France international said:

"He had a difficult season, but at least he shows leadership. That's why when you talk about Konaté or Tchouaméni, I'll always choose Tchouaméni because of his desire... And he also wears my number 8 on his back, so I love him for this! I believe that he has that little bit of leadership and the desire to bring the team all together. So it could be a good move for him. So why not? I would encourage him to go for it and try the Premier League."

As The Mirror reported, Tchouameni could draw inspiration from Varane and Casemiro, both of whom left Real Madrid for Manchester. Carrick wants this deal done quickly, but Madrid will want to squeeze every penny out of United to fund their Haaland obsession. If Carrick pulls this off, United’s midfield will finally have some steel after years of looking softer than wet cardboard.

Florentino Perez’s Shadow Funding Syndicate

You have to admire Florentino Perez’s ability to generate cash out of thin air. He is like a financial wizard who secretly taxes the rest of Europe.

Take Liverpool’s summer transfer business, for example. New Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola triggered a €40million release clause to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna. Because Madrid had inserted a 50% sell-on clause when they sold Munoz to Osasuna, Perez walked away with a cool €20m for doing absolutely nothing.

Real Madrid’s Sell-on Clause Trap

And the hustle doesn’t stop there. Liverpool, who are looking to replace Mohamed Salah and reinforce their midfield, have now turned their attention to Almeria’s Sergio Arribas.

The 24-year-old former Real Madrid youth product was spectacular last season, racking up 26 goals and seven assists in 47 matches. Almeria ended up third in the Segunda Division and lost the playoff final to Malaga, which has forced them to sell their star player to ease their financial fair play struggles.

Almeria has slapped a €25m price tag on Arribas, but guess who is waiting in the wings to collect? Real Madrid has another 50% sell-on clause in Arribas’s contract.

If Liverpool beats Sporting Lisbon and Benfica to his signature, Perez will pocket another €12.5m. It is a brilliant bit of business by Madrid, and a slightly embarrassing situation for Liverpool, who are effectively funding their rivals' transfer budget while trying to build Iraola’s new-look team around Florian Wirtz.

The Goalie Carousel and Scottish Bargains

While the heavyweights are fighting over hundreds of millions, Arsenal is quietly doing some tidy business of their own. Mikel Arteta is on the verge of signing free-agent goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The 26-year-old French goalkeeper had a bizarre final year at Leeds. After spending six seasons at Elland Road and making 215 appearances, he was completely frozen out by Daniel Farke last term, failing to make a single first-team appearance behind Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow. His last game for Leeds was a 2-2 draw against Swansea in March 2025.

Arteta’s Backup Plan

Meslier is being brought in to backup David Raya, which means Kepa Arrizabalaga is on his way out. Kepa spent only one season at Arsenal, making just one lonely Premier League appearance, and is now actively looking to leave.

It is another disappointing chapter in Kepa’s career, but Arsenal fans won’t mind as they’ve already made Piero Hincapie’s defender transfer permanent for £34.5 million. According to details from Metro UK, the deal for Meslier could also see young Tommy Setford depart the Emirates on a season-long loan to get some playing time.

Finally, let’s look north of the border where Celtic is about to wrap up their first signing of the summer. Manager Martin O'Neill confirmed that Colombian striker Camilo Duran is undergoing a medical to complete a £6million move from Qarabag.

The 24-year-old had a brilliant campaign in Azerbaijan last season, scoring five Champions League goals, including a memorable strike against Newcastle. Speaking about the transfer, O'Neill said:

"I think at this minute Duran will be coming in. He’s doing a medical, I think, just as we speak. If he’s not doing it tonight, he’ll be doing it tomorrow morning, and hopefully he’ll join us in Portugal."

Celtic also secured Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to a new contract over the weekend, so O'Neill’s squad is starting to take shape. It is a smart piece of business for a player who has shown he can score on the biggest European stage. As the window stays open, the transfer market is only going to get crazier, and Jose Mourinho is sitting right in the center of the storm, directing the madness.
