The Tactical Counter-Revolution: Brighton’s High Press, Villa’s Surge, and Spurs’ Crisis

Hello everybody and welcome to the Total Soccer Show. My name is Taylor Rockwell and I am here to host this weekend review edition of the Total Soccer Show, no Ryan Bailey with us today, but what a weekend it was a weekend that's all brightened beat Arsenal 3.0 with baby boy heartsellers men covering more ground in that single game than Manchester United have in all of their Premier League games this season combined. Now that isn't true, but it sort of feels like it could be, I was going to say. And that's fun, but that 3.0 scoreline was somehow not as bad of a loss as Spurs losing 3.2 to Aston Villa, we are bubbling ever closer towards the eruption of the volcano of rage that exists within Roberta Deserbi, not since Jack Torrance and the Shining can ever call a man struggling so hard to keep it together while everyone around him crumbles due to apparent historical curses. This Tottenham team looks short of confidence while Joe's enduring confidence in Nicholas Jackson was faithfully rewarded. Speaking of faithfully rewarded, is a thing I'd like to go supporters will be saying about red cards in a feisty Madrid Derby, Jose Maria's post game printed out images would beg to differ. It was a match that featured what I am calling a Juliano Simeone, perfect at trick that would be an assist, a penalty earned and a red card drawn Joe Lowry, which would you rather have Juliano Simeone, marking for an entire match or have you bellowing his knee viciously attack the underside of your foot. Oh, I mean, I think I have to go with the knee. It's just let's just rip the bandit off, right? Like I'm not going to be one of those people that's going to slowly pull. I'm just jumping in like the water and the pools too cold, too bad. Like I'm not easing my way and let's just get in and get it over with. I think I would rather have that than the pure 90 minutes of pain that I think Juliano Simeone brought everyone on that side like also Taylor. We need to do a Taylor Rockwell made up, but could they be true facts corner on these episodes because that was tremendous. I love that. Thank you for that. It's the Stephen Colbert feel facts. They're not facts, but they feel like they might be. Graham Rathvin. Here's the fact. I know a certain someone whose club got a point this weekend. That seems like a game that was incredibly exciting for at least six minutes. Yeah. I mean, we may have been cursed by the same witch doctor that cursed spurs because we got a point, which is definitely an improvement on our recent results. So that I'll be more talking about here against top of the table Clyde and yet somehow we are now further addressed at the bottom of the table because it came above us one. So even that felt like a defeat. Yay. I don't know which I enjoy more that there's a footballer out there named Lyle or that there's a football club out there named Clyde. Correct. And I think I need one to employ the other, whichever is is Clive mid table and in geos I see there's more of the lower lower ridges in the table or what? No, no. That's just funny. Clive is what you heard. Clyde. Yeah. Clyde is still like a Nate. You can still be Nate. I feel like it could be. Why not? Oh, I've never heard that name before. I quite like it. Clyde. You never heard of it. Clyde. Clyde was what? Bonnie and Clyde. Man, come on. Yeah. You've heard of it. Yeah. Yeah. Why it are presumably just contending for whatever the version of the European spots are. Thank you. That's right. Graham, do I have it right though that it was like a goal in the 19th minute, a goal in the 21st minute and then a red card of the 25th for your sterling Albion? Yeah. Let's go home. That's quite the moment. I could have gone home after 30 minutes. I mean, the week before that we were five no doubt after 30 minutes. That's an improvement. I will take sitting through an hour of nothingness over what happened the week before again. And we'll say it wasn't quite 90 minutes of nothingness though it might have felt sort of nothingness for taught them supporters. We're going to talk about that game in just a moment. Shall we talk about the team that actually won a game first? Let's do it. Let's do it. Let's do it. It's a good it's a fair question Taylor because that was the framing coming into this game was both of these teams were in a similar situation. Both of these teams had done a lot of business over the summer. We're having similar teething problems and had both failed to register a league win to start the season. So that was the framing around this game. And so it was no matter which way it went going to be like a real desperation game, particularly because we're heading into an 18 day international break now like all these teams that finish this thing of the season on a defeat or a poor performance have a long time to simmer on it. And spurs certainly have a lot to simmer on after their start to the league season. But for villa, their first one of the season, the team that had been struggling to score goals, obviously three goals away from home in this game. And I thought there was a lot for villa to be positive about it. It was a game that Villa grew into over the course of the 90 minutes. They had designed Suzuki to thank in the first half for a string of good good saves. We can talk about him a little bit later on. I think Joe has a point of his distribution that he wants to make, which I also spotted. He's very good at kicking the ball long. And then not to further steal Joe's thunder, the other villa player we have to highlight for the sake of it for Joe is Nicholas Jackson, who was really, really good. And I've made this point before. I think I made this point after the challenge. I'm careful for the hint of surprise in that in that experience. No, I don't think I got it all. Here's the thing, Joe, like you can be the driver of the hype train. I think you've earned that position. I have been on this train with you, I think. And I think I made the point after the club bridge game. He is perfect for the way that Villa wanted to play. And we saw in this game lots of runs, good at carrying the ball. Good timing to get in behind the spurs back line. He gives Villa that option to go direct, like they did for his goal. His finish for his goal was really good. And I think he's going to score, like I wouldn't be surprised if he's around the 15 goal mark for Villa this season. So I think we saw how Villa are growing together as a team, I agree, while also getting more proof of the confusing process spurs are going through where there are still moments in games where you think, ah, there's Deserby Ball or they actually started this game relatively well. And yet somehow they continue to lose so they continue to, to, to confuse. Yeah. Yeah, to stick on asked in Villa for just a moment here, I, I think this was them looking like how wow, we've had some of our players training together. We picked up in the summer window and we're actually going to put those guys on the field together and this is the result and the result being a team that had some really impressive high flying attacking moments in this game. Nicholas Jackson was tremendous. I mean, let's, let's not bury the lead. The best part bit of this whole game was his celebration after scoring that goal. I mean, the, the Caesar celebration with the thumb, like, where's he going to put it? Is he going to put it up after he scores against Tottenham? No, he's going to drop it down and then he did the throat slash. I mean, come on, man, that was like right in the camera. That was pure cinema. I enjoyed that a ton, but it was, it was not just the celebration. It was also the goal was Jackson takes very, very well and there's a little bit of nice combination play after the design Suzuki long range rocket of a, of a, of a pass out of his own goal box all the way to Jackson and then Jackson, I'm going to be combining Jackson finishes. I mean, that's got to fill you with joy if you're an asked and villa fan of three players that we just brought in three huge signings for us, replacing big time players as well in our 11 who look like not only like they could maybe get back to that level, but look like they could bring some different things compared to what asked to villa had last year while still fitting inside of what I am. He wants to do that was an encouraging moment for villa. I also think Jackson and Graham you highlighted there as well as ball carrying. There's a moment in this game where he's pulled wide on that left side. He takes a big touch around the defender and just goes like it just absolutely leaves defenders in his dust when he can carry the ball forward. And that's such a key bit of how and I every wants to play. You think about the profile of a John McGinn winger, a John McGinn is not a winger in any traditional sense, but what he is, is incredibly powerful on the ball driving it forward. And that is such a huge part of what they want to do asked and villa and Jackson is a great thing to that. And it's not just Jackson. It's also you on monzombie. You made his first start for asked and villa in this game and was brilliant. I thought I mean, his off ball movement in the goal of these scores. He does the work off the ball and then gets a tap in as a result. That's good work. His ability to go and combine with Jackson on the second goal, like I talked about already. He was getting engaged defensively, monzombie in this match. He's not a, yeah, he's playing as a number 10 in this match. And I think he will continue to do that for a lot of this season. He's not a classic 10 by any stretch of the imagination, right? He's sort of an all rounder, right? Is he a winger? Is he an eight? Is he a 10? It's kind of a little bit of both of those things, but again, screams asked and villa to me. Yeah. Absolutely do. I mean, they really, really do. You think about George Hennings and the young player that they're bringing through in him. Again, sort of has shades of that as well. I mean, you run through the list. This is a profile clearly that Unai Emery likes these, these powerful, rangel clever players who can do a little bit of everything all at once. I thought it was incredibly encouraging for Villa to see their new signings actually bed in a little bit in play. And that's why genuinely I'm not, I'm not especially worried about villa. And to be honest, I'm not panicked about Todd. I'm a little bit more worried about Todd and because they have more. So you're the organizational rot that they're building that they're trying to go up against. But Villa, I don't think it's a shock that they have a relatively good performance. The beginning was poor. I actually do agree with that and spurts in some good stuff, which we'll get to. But I think it's, it's not a surprise whatsoever that as their host of new players coming into a place that are superstars from last season, get to play together that they're going to start to look like a better team. I will say this perhaps because I've been so focused on a knowing Joe with my thoughts on Nicholas Jackson. I don't know if I had, if I read that he had that many tools in his bag, like to your point, Joe, that one, I think it's, I think it's Van Heca. It might be Van Deven. It's tough to remember which Van Defender it was. But I think that's the one you're talking about where he just, for sure, blows past them. And they are like, I, I'm 20 yards behind this play that I'm not going to be doing anything here. Like I did not know he had that. But I also didn't know that he had the physicality to do the holdup play and to be a sort of target striker when you need him to be. I think he was critical in that distribution from Zion Suzuki, finding somebody, obviously his goal exemplifies that with the problems he causes the create. Kati creates, but then also the finishing ability and technique. I did not know that he had that many aspects to his game. I withdraw some level of criticism towards him, Angel. I feel like he is the thesis statement on Joe's worldview on forwards and soccer where like the criticism of Nicholas Jackson is he misses chances, right? Show me a striker that doesn't miss chances. First of all, but second of all, he gets into the positions and you look at his scoring record. He's really confusing that Nicholas Jackson gets so much criticism. He scored 24 lead goals in 60 games for Chelsea in two dysfunctional seasons for that team. He went to Barneycon loan last season, which was a confusing move. He was always going to be second string, but he played 23 games in the Bundesliga last season. Only I believe five of them start scored eight goals for Bayern last season. So he's still like in all competitions, he got double figures for Bayern last season. So I think there's plenty to light in Nicholas Jackson. I think Villeau are going to build around him and my, my hottest take on Nicholas Jackson is he might be an upgrade on Ollie Watkins. Like Ollie, at this stage in his career, like Ollie Watkins has a, as in Villeau legend, clearly was excellent for them over a number of seasons, but I just think Nicholas Jackson is such a good fit for every ball. And we've seen it in a couple of games already this season. Yeah. I do have a little bit of question. I mean, I agree with that, Grimm. And it's not a hat to take at least in this, in this corner of the TSS tree that we've got going on. I do think Jackson will have some interesting problems to solve this season for Villeau because of the changing cast behind him, right? The changes that Villeau have made, how incredibly active they were over the summer window. We don't see maybe these elite chance creators in the Villeau team at this stage. I think Monsombi will be a very good Premier League player. I'm quite bullish on what he will be for this team. But again, he's not a classic through ball threading sort of number 10. Now Morgan Rogers wasn't that either for Ollie Watkins. And so we've seen it when I am ready, get this out of those kinds of players before. But I do wonder exactly where the sort of playmaking is going to come for Jackson and who's going to be providing him with all the looks that I think he can really thrive on in games that are a little less open because Villeau had tons of space to attack into in this game because Tottenham were attacking quite directly. And then as the game goes on, Tottenham go and need to find a goal to get back in the game. And so there are even more stretch to go and find chances. And I think that plays right into what Villeau want to do. In some ways, and John McKenzie was making this point on a TFO podcast recently, there are some similarities between what Emory and Deserbie want to do, which is they want to draw you in to play and beyond. Right. Think about a classic pep team. It wasn't really exactly Pepsema with Manchester City, a Barcelona or a Bayern Munich guest. He would attack space and behind if it was there, but it was really, can we move more systematically up the field and go and create chances that way? And there were a lot of low blocks that those teams faced as a result. But for Villeau, they want to explode into space and behind and spurs have some similar tendencies there. And Jackson fits that really well. But what happens when teams start to take that away from Villeau? What happens when teams take that away from Tottenham? I mean, it's an interesting problem that I think these teams are both going to have to solve this. The year goes on. It's interesting, Joe, because there are similarities there, because Villeau want to attack that, like, explode and attack that space behind, whereas spurs just want to explode and explode. Something like that. Yeah. One of the most interesting way of transitioning is to talk about them. They did get their first two goals of the season. So that's a positive. I think, like, I think I'm slightly more panicked about Tottenham than maybe Joe, maybe than Graham, because I definitely had them finishing top five. I thought maybe they were going to turn it around. I thought Deserby was going to be the guy. It felt like they had empowered him and boldened him like they invested a lot into this team. But watching this game and then going back and watching the first half of the Everton game, which it did, and it was punishing, there's a lot of similarities in the two games. Like both games spurs start really strong. Get a lot of chances, create a lot of different chances and are basically denied by good defending and good goalkeeping and a little bit of wastefulness in front of goal. There's also a commonality of Mateus Fernandez looking very short of confidence and very indecisive in a more advanced position. We'll talk about that. And then ultimately, there's like a scare moment for Tottenham. They sit off a little bit more. It's not quite that they get complacent, but you can see that they get rattled and they get nervous. Yeah. And this was another example of that where they started really well. It sounds zucchini making like five saves in five minutes to keep this one level. But then at a certain point, it just felt like the confidence dip gram and spurs just weren't that same team. And Villa found ways to hurt them and did. Yeah. I spotted a blue sky post by Ahmed Valid, who writes for the athletic, a tactical, very good tactical writer, you should read this stuff. And he tweeted, what do you call it? Blue sky, blue sky, ski teed, right? Something along those lines are refused to use that word again. Anyway, he shared on blue sky the trend in Tottenham Hot Spurs past four Premier League games and they built it pointed them. Number one, start well, two mischances, three game state suits opponent, four confidence drop, confidence drops, five, unable to create against deep block, six collapse. And that's pretty much what we've seen from spurs all the way through this season. And I sometimes think both from managers and from pundits, we put too much emphasis on things like mindset and confidence to be honest, but looking at the way the spurs team have started this season, I kind of agree with the Zerbys assessment of what's going wrong for spurs right now. I'm not sure I agree with his methods of addressing that. He didn't speak to the players after this game. It very much seems like he is freeing and already doing the kind of Roberto, the Zerbys thing. The theory on Roberto, the Zerbys was, yes, he flames out at clubs, but at least there's like a season and a half of good stuff. And I guess spurs have kind of popped that cycle for him, but they're so incredibly fragile. Spurs. They're games, I keep following the same pattern. That's 48 games in a row that spurs have failed to win when they have conceded the first goal. And plenty of those games will have been ones where they've had a clear talent advantage, right? Possibly not in this game against Asunville, but they're just so, so soft. And I thought the escape of last season, avoiding relegation on the final day of the season as they did. I foolishly thought it would liberate spurs. Not just in terms of the players, like the atmosphere in the stadium as well. And there just seems to be such a fear factor of like, oh, here we go again. And it's, I kind of trace it back to that first game of the season against Brentford, where they lose three nil. And I just wonder, and I know this is like, this is a hypothetical situation where you say, well, what if this thing happened? How would things be different? And that's not how reality works. But if spurs don't have Brentford in the first day of the season, are we seeing this pattern continue five, six games into the season? I guess we'll never know, but it just seems like things are linked from one game to the other. And yeah, they are, they already seem to be spiraling. I'll continue on with the intangibles and then I'll go over to Joe for the actual observable factual side of things. Like I look at this first team and all of the departures they've had, all of the incomings they've had. And I don't really know who their leaders are. Like Mickey Venn event is the captain, obviously. And there are other established players in there who've been at Adam for a while, Rodrigo Bentoncore, a prime example of that Pedro Poro, to some extent. And even like Andy Robertson coming in this season, obviously has a ton of experience, a ton of leadership, both for club and country. But this whole team, it doesn't feel like there is a person who, when things start to go wrong, arrest the slide or single-handedly pulls them out of it. Like Manchester United have not been good this season, but they still have Bruno, who can kind of lead by example for better for worse. I don't know who that figure is for Tottenham. And so it just starts to feel like if the team play isn't working, they go individual. And if that doesn't work, then it's sort of a hybrid approach that doesn't seem to work either. I also think there are some players being played out of position. Some of that is due to injury. Some of that is Roberta Deserbi trying to figure this team out. But it just doesn't seem like I do kind of buy into the idea that once things start to not go their way that you can like, I'm assuming feel it in the stadium, the atmosphere turns, the frustration starts to mount, the players start to feel that frustration. And I think that vibe of here we go again can really be negative and just have a sizable negative impact on the overall performance. So those would be the intangibles. Joe, I come to you for what do you feel like tactically or individually did not work in this game? I think you as a right, first of all, with everything that you've said, it certainly seems that way from the outside anyway. I do think we've sort of glossed over Deserbi learning his players quite a bit in all this. And that's because there's other things to get to as well, but it's been mentioned until it's expand upon it. I think that for me is the biggest thing right now, where there's so many new pieces to this team. And Deserbi, of course, has had a lot of say and who exactly those new pieces are. And so it's not like he gets a total past for seemingly in my mind, misusing some of these players. I'm sure he has good reasons for it. But I think about Matthias Fernandez playing as the as the 10 seems odd when I think really he is best as that while progressing number eights. Now there have been a lot of injury issues in the attack as well. And so maybe there's some consideration there. I actually, can James Madison go 90 right now at this point in the season? I don't think so, not right now. So that, I mean, that's just always no, Joe, regardless of whatever the situation is, the answer is no. That's a separate problem. So let's sidebar in the injuries real quick. Pedro Poro goes down and comes off in the 18th minute of this game. Not great. Apparently in hamstring injury, he's been injury prone a lot. And so that that's a real problem for this team moving forward because Poro is a very good player. But does Erwin wants to do quite well? Not right now. Anyway, he's not fit anything right now. But Fernandez having to play as the 10 because Madison can't go fully on that. I think then detracts from what does Erwin wants to do deeper in midfield that you're just not getting the same ball progression out of benton core and tonali as you would out of Fernandez and tonali. I think or Fernandez really just being in that double pivot at all. That's one problem. I think about Savio being played on the right side where I don't think he's been terribly effective so far in his best work in Spain. Game over on the left and in some of his best work at City came on the left as well. Now we're seeing him over on the right. Marmou starts this game on the left. Eventually, Marmou goes up top in this match and then Savio goes over to the left and I think that's what we see a little bit more danger from Spurs. So it just doesn't seem to me like, deserve he has cracked the code of where to use these guys. And that is one reason I think to be encouraged, frustrated for sure, but encourage as well if you're a Tottenham fan, you have talent that's not being maximized. So what does this team look like when the talent is being maximized? That's something to think about. The other thing I will say here is we're really early in the year and the table is chaos right now. I mean, do we think that whole is better than Tottenham? I really don't. Like as funny as it is, I really don't think that. I don't really think that Manchester United are where they're sitting in the table right now. 13th something along those lines. I don't think 12th. I don't think Manchester United are the 12th best team in the Premier League. Spurs are not the only team that are having these early, I mean, Villa, right? I mean, we could be coming out of this game reasonably tight margins. I know that Villa take a lead and Spurs have to call the way back in, but it's not like there was miles separating these teams in this game. That's my point is that there still is a lot of chopping and changing. And I think settling to be done in the table, the margins, we're going to talk about Arsenal Brighton later on. The margins between the big teams and everybody else right now is smaller than it's literally ever been in the Premier League. Like it is every single game is a slog. Every single game is a battle. I don't think it's surprising really to see what Spurs are going through right now because every team is going through it, even Arsenal is going through it. Spurs are just not as good as Arsenal and they're going through it more. And Deserbys hasn't figured stuff out yet. That's sort of my top line view on this team is if they can get healthy and Deserbys can start putting his best players in their best spots. This team will rebound a bit. What that looks like and how much they're going to remount, that's a separate question. I was going to ask Graham, who is the Spurs player that Deserbys will publicly fall out with first? And then remember that Richard Listen exists. So Graham, who is the second Spurs player that Roberta Deserbys will fall out with first? I saw some comments that he publicly called out Muhammad Kutush in his post game comments for a lack of positional discipline leading to one of the goals. Kutush also does get an assist in this one. I'm wondering if there's anybody else you think will be the breaking point for Deserbys. Can I answer everyone? That seems like you're a bit of Deserbys. I don't know. I can't imagine he relished seeing Andy Robertson make a completely brainless decision to keep a ball in for John McGinn to swing it into the box for a villa to score the first goal. Team Aith baby. Yeah, as well. I like to see a hidden international break. Those connections are still there. So I don't know Andy Robertson. I feel sorry for Andy Robertson because the job that he is being asked to do, he just does not have the physical capability. Like Deserbys asking him to play like, I don't know, peak 2019 Andy Robertson on the overlap and he just doesn't have the legs to do it anymore. And I think we're seeing last season was rough for Andy Robertson, but I feel like this season has been even trickier for him so far. So he probably feels, you know, he probably feels uninhibited to be the leader that Spurs have signed him to be because he's playing so poorly and I can imagine that I would affect someone's confidence. So he's playing poorly, Sandra Tanali, like the way that that midfield is constructed for Spurs. It's just continues to be a real pain point for Spurs. Joe mentioned it, but Mattias Fernandez being used as a 10. I understand that Madison can't go the 90. Kula Sevsk is still walking his way back to England to fitness. Yeah, Javi Simon's as well. Remember, they signed him for that position. Then he got an ACL injury. So Spurs have been down on their luck in the number 10 role. I accept that, but I just think their need for a ball progress in a deep position is so start right now. I'd be moving Fernandez in there and just figuring out, like putting more motion in the number 10 position or maybe even bringing in a third central midfield. Look, they need ball progression in a deeper area of the field. And Tanali has been asked to do that and he's just never really been that player. And then that's affecting his confidence because he's been brought in his like a hundred million pound star signing and a lot of things are just lengths and this international break comes at a good time for Spurs, I think, to just reset. I think I've been sort of tongue in cheek about a lot of, a lot of Tottenham in this first segment. Before we go, I will say I do largely agree with Joe, like I, it continues to be the case. I don't think they look horrific. I think that they just have these periods where they lose confidence or don't connect passes or don't kind of keep the pressure on. And it really reminds me like Andy Robertson, particularly reminds me of maybe the season or two after Liverpool win the title when they're doing the same things that made them this incredible attacking unit. But now like the shots go wide or the shot that would have been on frame goes wide or the shot that would have been at the back of the net goes right at the goalkeeper and there's just a lack of precision execution. Now is Robert and like three different times in this game. He has a ball in that in another game and another like life that gets tapped in and Spurs are up to nil in the first 15 minutes and they are cruising. And that's where I do feel some sympathy for dessert because you can kind of see that in him of like it just needs to click. We just need to get the one goal, the one win and then it will kick on from here, but the longer they go without that, the more the pressure builds, the more the volcano starts to rupture. Welcome back to the total soccer show everybody. Graham Ruffin, Brighton 3, Arsenal nil, I assume we will spend some time talking about what went wrong for Arsenal, but let's continue the trend that we so seldom continue and talk about the team that won first. How impressive we're brightening this game and how do they make this happen? As impressive as the score line suggests, this was a 3-0 game. I haven't seen Arsenal ragdolled in a match like this for a long, long time. I know the XG was pretty even. The big chances were marginal to, and actually Arsenal had more touches in the opposition box. Forget all that. I watched this game in full. I spoke to an Arsenal fan. I know afterwards and even he admitted, and he's a very biased Arsenal fan as well have to talk them down on some things, but even he admitted this was like complete dominance by Brighton, who played with so much energy. The press was so effective. They won so many jules. They were so dangerous in quick transition. Arsenal just couldn't handle them and the match the day commentator when I watched the highlights back again, he called Arsenal a rabble, and that summed it up. There is a side of this debate or this discussion of how bad Arsenal were, but we're focusing on Brighton first. They were just disrupted by how brave Brighton were, how many players they pushed forward at a possession, how many players they left forward for counters. For the second goal, they had a 4-on-3 from the moment the goalkeeper makes the save. Arsenal even got done on a set piece in this game. It was just not their day at all, and Brighton were so, so impressed. In a way that makes me think what's the sealant for them this season, and I acknowledge that in past seasons, did they do this last season or the season before they started so strongly and then they kind of sagged in the middle of the season. That's been a pattern for Brighton. So I acknowledge that, but this sort of performance, and the run of form that are on, like this is no fluke. They beat Manchester United during the week at Old Trafford as well. It does make me wonder what the sealant is for for this team this season. The work rate and energy that Brighton pressed with in this game made me tired from watching it. I mean, this was unbelievable defensive effort from Heartsellers team, constantly going and pressing forward. A lot of man-to-man defending in the press in this game, and Arsenal backed themselves to play through it and couldn't, like that's really the summary of this game is that Brighton's press was so good, Arsenal tried and continued to try to play through it and failed over and over and over again. But along with really good finishing for Brighton, it should be said, defines this entire game. Like that was the story of the game is Arsenal trying to play through an incredible Brighton press and not succeeding on repeat. I so enjoyed this Brighton performance. And if this is the kind of defensive output that we can see from Brighton, we saw some similar things at times against Manchester United. Nah, I mean, this is a team that truly could hang around the European spots all season long. I mean, they're sitting third right now. I just did the whole bit about at the table. It's too jumbled to really make sense of and I still believe that. Some of what we're seeing from Brighton looks genuinely sustainable, where you think about the kinds of profiles they have in the attack, Coastalist says the number nine, he gets a goal in this game, 19 years old, can run a socks off Diego Gomez, a player that maybe some of our listeners will be more familiar with than if we were British soccer podcasts first and foremost, Gomez is not a winger. Like, I mean, I guess that's the thing to do these days is just not play wingers on the wing. But ever since he showed up at Brighton, he's basically been a winger. Well, why is that because his work rate is unbelievably good? He's a physical monster. He can run for days and he goes and wins the ball and presses like a madman. You run through the list of Brighton players. I was so impressed with what the individual is brought. And also some of the players that maybe I wasn't as familiar with coming into the season, Gem Andres, I thought was brilliant, absolutely brilliant in this game. I mean, yes, ends up actually on the box score with his corner kick header, but the size that he brings in open players well helps Brighton win duels, which helps them be an aggressive defensive team. Also some of the quality that he shows on the ball was two minutes into this game and Andres is just dotting up Arsenal's defensive structure. I mean, his comfort on calm on the ball, he looks absolutely brilliant. And so you run through the list of players and they're getting that elite defensive output from so many players that have the right physical traits and understand the press. And that's the other thing when you're pressing man to man, which is what Brighton were doing for a lot of this game. Not just pressing man to man, but also when they're in their block deeper down the field, they were extremely man oriented following players around everywhere, basically just leaving one center back free in their own back line. And so the shape was constantly changing as Brighton sat deeper, but what you need there is is a brilliant understanding of what your teammates are doing all the time, right? You need to understand, hey, when can I pass my man off that somebody else? So we're not totally pulled out of position in both in the press and in the block. You constantly see Brighton players going and communicating with each other. And even at times, maybe even wordlessly, understanding when to pass players off, it reminded me truly of PSG's press from earlier in the season when we talked about them against Monaco. And just how calm and collected they were defensively, and how seamlessly they were able to go and press man to man, Brighton look genuinely elite at it, like among not just the mid table non elite big teams in England or in Europe, but amongst anybody I've seen this whole season. Yeah. And obviously high pressing is certainly not a new thing. It's kind of been the defining feature of the last like decade or whatever. It just feels like Brighton have turned the dial. There was a really interesting thing, response from from Hurtzler after the game, he was asked about Maxime DeKyper, who is a fullback or was a fullback until this season played at the World Cup for Belgium as a fullback. And he was asked like, well, why have you played him as a winger? And the answer was essentially like, well, in an attacking sense, he's good enough to play there. But we felt like putting a more defensive minded player at the top of the fields would you know, just help us help our press basically, which we saw in this game, which is like, it's just an inversion of everything that we think about soccer of like defensive player, like good defensive player goes at the back of the fields, but Brighton are thinking, how can we move that player further forward for those for those qualities? So yeah, there's just so much to like about them at the moment. I mean, Pascal Gross is a second in the Premier League, not just for Brighton. He is second in the Premier League for distance covered so far this season. He's 35 years old and has also has like, you know, 10 goal evolvements in like six games or something like that. The season that he is putting together right now is quite incredible. I want to stick with Gross for a moment and with Castulas because obviously they score the first two goals, but they're also, I think, representative in a different way of the disruption that Brighton brought to this game because both of those goals are arsenal just dropping off and allowing a player to shoot from like 25 years out, kind of completely uncontested, but both times it's because of a very aggressive direct vertical run. The first one is from Jesy and I are the second one is from Diego Gomez. And that Gomez one is like, it looks like he's going to receive a wall pass and like, he plays into Castulas and then he makes the run and the entire arsenal of defense just drops off expecting another ball to come expecting there to be another pass. I'm not sure why if that was a thing that they thought Bright would do or if that's what they're accustomed to. But as a result, they kept leaving like shooters able to shoot from 25 years out with no one around them. And it just felt like Brighton disrupted with their defensive work and effort and got the crowd into it. But then also took their chances really well and weren't really kind of like dawdling on the ball. And that's what I'm going to tell you about this one. Actually, I want to go to Joe.
