Marcos Aoás Corrêa — known everywhere as Marquinhos — was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He came through the youth academy at Corinthians before Roma signed him as a teenager. PSG then paid a reported €31.4 million for him in 2013 when he was just 19. At the time, many questioned the fee for a teenager. More than a decade later, he remains PSG's most important player, the club's captain, and arguably the one consistent constant through the entire QSI era.

A Decade at PSG — He Stayed When Everyone Left

PSG's ownership era has been defined by massive spending and superstar departures. Zlatan Ibrahimović left. Thiago Silva left. Neymar signed for a world-record fee and eventually departed. Lionel Messi arrived and lasted two seasons before leaving. Kylian Mbappé — the jewel — eventually completed his move to Real Madrid. Through all of it, Marquinhos stayed.

He arrived as a 19-year-old with raw ability and extraordinary composure. He grew into one of the best centre-backs in Europe. He became club captain. He became the player that younger PSG stars looked to in the dressing room. When journalists and fans ask what PSG's identity is — beyond the galácticos and the Qatari money — Marquinhos is the most honest answer.

vs Inter Milan: The UCL Quarter-Final Tactical Battle

Marquinhos vs Lautaro Martínez & Marcus Thuram

Inter Milan's striking partnership is one of the most physical and technically gifted in European football. Lautaro Martínez is intelligent, quick, and scores goals under pressure. Marcus Thuram is powerful, tall, and relentless with his running. Marquinhos will need to manage both — which means he cannot be drawn by one to leave space for the other. His reading of the game and communication with his defensive partner will be decisive.

Man-Marking vs Zonal Coverage Under Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique deploys a possession-based, high-press system that asks his centre-backs to be comfortable with the ball. Marquinhos is ideal for this — his passing from deep is clean and his ability to carry the ball under pressure opens up PSG's build-up. In out-of-possession phases, Enrique's system blends zonal defending with selective man-marking triggers. Marquinhos is the one reading when to step and when to hold the line.

Aerial Ability — Key Against Inter's Set-Piece Threat

Inter Milan are effective from set-pieces — they use clever runs, screens, and Thuram's aerial dominance to create chances. Marquinhos' aerial ability makes him one of PSG's key defensive resources in these moments. He not only wins headers but also contributes at the other end — Marquinhos has scored important goals from set-pieces in his PSG career, and his timing in the box from corners cannot be ignored as a PSG attacking threat too.

Captain's Role: Leading the High Defensive Line

PSG under Enrique defend with a high line — brave, aggressive, and liable to be caught by a well-timed run behind. Marquinhos coordinates this line constantly. His voice, his positioning triggers, his stepping out to win balls before they reach the strikers — all of this is communication-intensive, instinctive work that only a player with his experience can execute at this level. Against Lautaro's timing runs, this will be tested repeatedly.

PSG's UCL Curse — Breaking the Hoodoo

Paris Saint-Germain have never won the UEFA Champions League. Despite spending hundreds of millions on the most famous players on Earth, the trophy has eluded them entirely. The 2020 final — where PSG faced Bayern Munich in Lisbon — remains their closest moment. They lost 1-0. Marquinhos played. He remembers it.

Since then, PSG have suffered exits at various stages — dramatic last-16 collapses, controversial refereeing controversies, and the departures of the players who were supposed to deliver the trophy. Each year, the question lingers: can PSG finally do it?

The 2025-26 UCL campaign under Luis Enrique represents a different kind of PSG — less reliant on individual genius, more built on collective pressing and tactical structure. Marquinhos, as the last survivor of multiple failed campaigns, carries the accumulated weight of those near-misses. For him personally, lifting the UCL would represent the final chapter of an extraordinary club career.
