1. Executive Overview: Core Theses & Key Revelations

The recent iteration of the Sky Sports Premier League Podcast, anchored by former Luton Town and Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Rob Edwards alongside Champions League winner Jamie Carragher, provides one of the most candid, analytically rich examinations of top-flight tactical evolution in recent broadcasting history. Frame-by-frame analysis of Leeds United's 4-1 dismantling of Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle United at Elland Road served not merely as a match retrospective, but as a lens into the structural and athletic shifts currently reshaping English football.

Across an expansive discussion, three primary analytical theses emerged that demand detailed interrogation from tactical analysts and club executives alike:

  • The Inflation of Premier League Athletic Benchmarks: The physical threshold required to compete in the Premier League is advancing at an unprecedented rate. Edwards’ observations of tunnel dynamics—coupled with Carragher’s admission that traditional 6-foot central defenders from previous eras would struggle to cope—signal a shift where physical volume, sprint velocity, and duel winning are no longer secondary traits, but prerequisites for tactical execution.
  • Tactical Sophistication Beyond Direct Physicality: Leeds United's overwhelming victory was not the byproduct of crude target-man play or mindless running. Instead, it was an orchestration of right-side overload dynamics involving Jayden Bogle, James Justin, and Ao Tanaka, paired with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s elite vertical platform and Ethan Ampadu’s structural balance.
  • The Psychological & Mechanical Shock of Continental Adaptation: Newcastle United’s surrender at Elland Road highlighted the structural friction continental managers face upon entering the Premier League. Simultaneously, Edwards’ revelations regarding his managerial pivot at Luton Town ("Luton 2.0") and Hull City’s early-season defensive stubbornness provide a practical blueprint for promoted clubs navigating extreme competitive asymmetry.

Empirically, the match served as a stark data point: Leeds United recorded their highest team running distance of the season at 118.3 kilometers, outshooting Newcastle 15 to 7—including a dominant 11-shot first-half assault that effectively ended the contest before the interval. Newcastle’s inability to matched Leeds' duel intensity or escape aggressive pressing traps resulted in what Carragher rightly termed a structural "back to reality moment" for Jaissle’s young squad.

2. Context & Background: The Landscape Leading to This Conversation

To fully evaluate the technical observations made by Edwards and Carragher, one must examine the competitive backdrop preceding this fixture. Leeds United entered the Monday night clash on a sustained trajectory of structural progress. Dating back to December of the previous campaign, Leeds had steadily climbed the Premier League form tables, establishing an identity rooted in high-octane pressing, rapid vertical transitions, and meticulous spatial organization under their coaching staff. Remaining unbeaten four matches into the season—their finest top-flight start in twenty-five years—Leeds had elevated themselves into third position, signaling that their metrics were indicative of genuine top-tier performance rather than a temporary anomaly.

Conversely, Newcastle United arrived at Elland Road amidst a phase of structural transition. Operating under new managerial leadership in Matthias Jaissle, Newcastle had navigated their opening fixtures with reasonable point accumulation, including credible displays against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur. However, this early stability masked underlying vulnerabilities: a squad integrating young domestic and European talents into a high-intensity league without having yet faced an opponent capable of imposing relentless physical and spatial stress across all three phases of the pitch.

Elland Road under night floodlights has historically acted as an atmospheric accelerator, magnifying tactical mismatches and punishing teams that lack physical assertiveness. When two unbeaten sides met, the contest was primed to reveal whether Newcastle's tactical framework could withstand high-volume duel confrontation, or whether Leeds United's athletic and positional maturity would expose the gap between continental preparation and Premier League reality.

3. Deep-Dive Thematic Breakdown

3.1 The Inflation of Athletic Standards: Physicality, Speed, and Tunnel Dynamics

The conversation between Rob Edwards and Jamie Carragher touched upon one of the most fundamental shifts in contemporary football: the exponential inflation of physical metrics. Edwards noted a striking visual observation when watching players line up prior to kickoff, stating that the sheer power, pace, and physical stature of modern squads has reached levels where even former professional defenders would question their capacity to compete.

Carragher reinforced this observation through a personal lens, reflecting on his own career as a 6-foot central defender. In previous decades, positional intellect and timing allowed center-backs of moderate physical height to command penalty areas. Today, the escalation of player velocity and explosive verticality has redefined defensive profiling. The modern Premier League defender must combine traditional spatial awareness with elite sprint recovery capacity, horizontal coverage range, and explosive aerial output.

"I sometimes look at Premier League tunnels now when players are coming out, and I do look at it and think, I'm not sure I'd have been able to cope. The actual power, the pace, the physicality of everything, it just goes up and up each year."
— Rob Edwards

This physical inflation is directly tied to the tactical death of low-intensity possession football. In earlier tactical eras, elite sides could control games by establishing 65% to 70% ball retention, pacing the match through low-risk horizontal passing circuits. In the modern Premier League, aggressive high-pressing schemes force constant physical contests. Teams are compelled to contest more first-half duels, sprint longer recovery distances, and execute high-speed transitions repeatedly over 90 minutes. Total running distance (such as Leeds' 118.3 km) is no longer the sole metric of effort; the key differentiator is High-Speed Running (HSR) and sprint volume performed under fatigue.

3.2 Micro-Tactical Deconstruction: Leeds United’s Right-Side Overloads & Rotational Dynamics

While external narratives often attribute Leeds United's dominance strictly to work rate, Edwards and Carragher provided a comprehensive breakdown of the sophisticated tactical mechanics governing their play. Central to Leeds’ attacking structure was an asymmetric right-side rotational triangle featuring right wing-back Jayden Bogle, right center-back James Justin, and central midfielder Ao Tanaka.

Rather than adhering to rigid positional lines, Leeds deployed dynamic fluid rotations designed to dislocate Newcastle's mid-block defense:

  • Underlapping & Overlapping Wing-Back Trajectories: Jayden Bogle repeatedly pushed into the highest horizontal line, functioning effectively as an inside forward. This movement pinned Newcastle’s left-back and forced their central defenders into wide coverage zones.
  • Rest-Defense Securing via James Justin: As Bogle advanced into the penalty box, James Justin stepped up from his right center-back slot into the vacated wide channel, providing immediate rest-defense coverage to prevent Newcastle counter-attacks.
  • Half-Space Orchestration by Ao Tanaka: Operating in tandem with Ethan Ampadu, Tanaka frequently dropped into the right half-space, creating 3v2 numerical overloads against Newcastle's second line of engagement. This allowed Tanaka time to pick penetrative passes or recycle possession effortlessly.

This positional fluidity forced Newcastle into constant decision-making breakdowns. If Newcastle pressed Tanaka high, Leeds used Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a direct vertical escape valve. If Newcastle dropped into a deep block to negate vertical balls, Leeds used Tanaka and Ampadu to dictate tempo and construct sustained box-entry sequences.

3.3 The Focal Point Mechanics: Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the Art of Vertical Target Play

A pivotal segment of the panel's analysis focused on Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s role as the structural anchor of Leeds United's attack. Jamie Carragher highlighted Calvert-Lewin’s extraordinary aerial biomechanics, specifically emphasizing his ability to generate massive vertical elevation from a standing jump.

Calvert-Lewin’s impact extended far beyond scoring goals. His physical profile altered the spatial geography of the match in three distinct ways:

  1. Head-Pass Directionality: Rather than flicking header balls aimlessly into space, Calvert-Lewin executed deliberate, cushioned headed passes to teammates. His lay-off for Bogle’s opening sequence demonstrated elite aerial control under heavy defender contact.
  2. Creation of Underneath Space: By pinning Newcastle's central defenders deep, Calvert-Lewin created a void between Newcastle's defensive line and midfield bank. Off-the-ball runners like Noah Okafor and Ao Tanaka repeatedly exploited this space to collect second balls.
  3. Aggressive Rest-Press Positioning: When Calvert-Lewin contested aerial duels, Leeds brought their entire team shape forward. Even when the initial header was lost, Leeds was structurally positioned to win the second ball instantly, trapping Newcastle inside their own defensive third.

Jayden Bogle’s quotes from the episode confirm this tactical synergy. Understanding Calvert-Lewin's intent to compete for every aerial ball allowed Leeds' midfield and wing-backs to gamble on aggressive forward runs, knowing the probability of second-ball recovery was exceptionally high.

3.4 The Reality Check: Newcastle United’s Systemic Naivety and Continental Adaptation

For Newcastle United and manager Matthias Jaissle, the 4-1 defeat represented a severe tactical structural shock. Carragher noted that despite an encouraging start to the season, this fixture exposed Newcastle's lack of physical robustness when confronted by a top-tier Premier League pressing machine.

Newcastle’s breakdown was evident across several structural dimensions:

  • Inability to Sustain First-Half Pressure: Newcastle managed only one shot in the entire first half compared to Leeds’ 11 attempts. They were repeatedly caught in possession near their own penalty area, unable to break through Leeds’ front-three pressing trap.
  • Naivety Under Turnover Conditions: Young players, such as Lewis Miley, were thrust into high-stress build-up phases without adequate passing angles or physical protection, leading directly to high-turnover goals and defensive panic.
  • Lack of Rest-Defense Stability: When Newcastle attempted to move forward in the second half, their defensive line remained disconnected from their midfield, leaving vast corridors for Leeds to execute rapid counter-attacks.

Carragher emphasized that while continental tactics emphasize spatial manipulation and possession structure, they fail in the Premier League if the team cannot match the opponent’s duel win rate. Newcastle were simply "beaten up" physically, exposing a clear area for managerial intervention and squad development.

3.5 Promoted Club Survival & Managerial Psychology: The "Luton 2.0" Paradigm and Hull City's Template

One of the most valuable analytical contributions came from Rob Edwards’ reflections on managerial psychology and tactical adaptation during high-stress Premier League campaigns. Discussing the challenges faced by promoted teams like Hull City and Coventry City, Edwards detailed the cognitive load placed on head coaches during extended periods of adversity.

Edwards recalled a critical turning point during his tenure at Luton Town. Following a passive, conservative performance against Brentford where Luton felt disconnected from their identity, Edwards implemented an aggressive tactical shift termed "Luton 2.0":

"We had a game at Brentford where we were too passive and I didn't really like us. And then after that, we've got to be us here. If we're going to go down, we've got to go down swinging and giving everything. So the next game, right, we are total man-for-man. We're going to show the best side of us and go for it."
— Rob Edwards

This transition to total man-oriented pressing rejuvenated Luton's squad and fanbase. Edwards emphasized that player belief is an absolute reflection of managerial body language. If a head coach exhibits hesitation or low energy, it metastasizes across the entire squad. Conversely, maintaining unwavering tactical conviction—even when visiting venues like Anfield or the Etihad Stadium—instills the psychological resilience required to secure top-flight points.

Furthermore, Edwards praised Hull City’s current Premier League start, citing their stubbornness without the ball, defensive compactness, and efficiency in transition as amongst the finest promoted side frameworks seen in recent years.

4. Speaker Perspectives & Analytical Contrast

The dynamic between Rob Edwards and Jamie Carragher generated a fascinating contrast in analytical methodology. Edwards provided the operational perspective of a modern dugout manager, evaluating team structures through the mechanics of training pitch repetition, emotional contagion, and real-time physical output. Carragher approached the analysis from an elite pundit’s perspective, prioritizing structural standards, technical executions under pressure, and macro league trends.

The matrix below outlines the key analytical divergences between the two experts during the broadcast:

Analytical Dimension Rob Edwards (Dugout Strategist) Jamie Carragher (Elite Analyst)
Primary Focus Coaching processes, rotational relationships, managerial energy, player psychology. Individual defensive technique, high-level structural flaws, athletic thresholds.
View on Physicality Focuses on total speed of execution, sprint volume, and positioning around first/second balls. Focuses on raw height, duel power, jump mechanics, and standing physical presence.
Evaluation of Leeds Highlights right-side tactical overloads (Bogle-Justin-Tanaka) and coaching organization. Highlights physical intimidation, relentless tempo, and Calvert-Lewin's aerial leap.
Assessment of Newcastle Sympathetic to new managerial adaptation, young player learning curves, and build-up errors. Direct critique of systemic soft-centeredness, labeling it a brutal "back to reality" moment.
Promoted Team Viability Emphasizes identity retention, positive energy, man-marking bravery ("Luton 2.0"). Emphasizes clinical conversion rates, defensive mistake punishment, and structural limits.

Despite these subtle differences in analytical lens, both experts arrived at identical conclusions regarding the state of the Premier League: teams that cannot maintain structural organization while operating at peak physical output will inevitably be exposed by modern pressing systems.

5. Strategic & Industry Implications

The technical insights surfaced during this podcast episode carry profound implications for club directors, head coaches, and recruitment departments across global football:

  • Recruitment Profiling Must Prioritize High-Speed Volume: Technical elegance without elite physical metrics is becoming an unviable commodity in the Premier League. Scouting departments must evaluate potential signings through the lens of High-Speed Running capacity, acceleration thresholds, and duel resilience.
  • The Obsolescence of Passive Mid-Blocks: Passive defensive structures that allow opponents comfortable build-up time are increasingly punished. As demonstrated by Leeds, modern top-tier sides employ high-intensity pressing traps to force long vertical passes, relying on superior second-ball positioning to regain control immediately.
  • Asymmetric Overloads as a Primary Unlocking Mechanism: Leeds United’s use of Jayden Bogle as an inside forward while securing rest-defense through James Justin provides a scalable tactical template for breaking down low-block defenses without exposing central channels.
  • Managerial Onboarding Protocols for Continental Coaches: Clubs hiring managers from European leagues must build in structural transition periods. As Matthias Jaissle experienced at Newcastle, tactical setups that succeed in slower-paced domestic leagues often require immediate physical calibration to withstand Premier League duel density.

6. Looking Ahead: Unresolved Questions & Next Milestones

As the Premier League season unfolds, several crucial tactical metrics and questions will determine whether the trends identified by Edwards and Carragher persist:

  1. Leeds United’s Physical Sustainability: Can Daniel Farke and Scott Parker’s squad maintain an intense 118.3 km per-match workload over a grueling 38-game schedule without suffering squad fatigue or soft-tissue injury spikes?
  2. Matthias Jaissle’s Defensive Re-calibration: How rapidly will Newcastle United adjust their build-up patterns and central midfield protection to avoid being physically overwhelmed in upcoming away fixtures against high-pressing opponents?
  3. The Hull City Promoted Benchmark: Will Hull City sustain their defensive stubbornness and chance creation metrics, proving that promoted sides can thrive without resorting to passive survival tactics?
  4. Key Metrics to Track: Analysts must closely monitor Second-Ball Recovery Percentage, High-Speed Running Distance (HSR), and Rest-Defense Efficiency across the league to measure the continuing physical inflation of top-flight English football.

Ultimately, the analysis delivered by Rob Edwards and Jamie Carragher underlines a compelling reality: the modern Premier League is an uncompromising arena where physical power and tactical sophistication must coexist seamlessly. Teams that master both will contend for Europe; those that fail to adapt will find themselves thoroughly beaten up by the relentless pace of the game.

One of those nights and the more celebrations, the better for Leeds United to absolutely put Newcastle United away here tonight. Remember, both sides unbeaten going into this. Leeds United's record remains untack 50 intact 15 shots to 7 11 of those 15 in the first half, which they were so dominant. Six of Newcastle United's seven shots came in the second half, which they managed to get a goal back. Late on from one of their new boys. That's the furthest that Leeds have run this season, 118.3 kilometres, possession was shared. But the points were not all three in the bag for Leeds United up to third. Rob Edwards, what did you like most about Leeds tonight? I loved the way they start the games. I think they're intensity that we spoke about before the game. It was there. But there's more to them than just like we showed before about fast attacks and running. There is more there that we noticed lots of rotations, especially on this right-hand side as well with Bogor and Justin and Tanaka. We've got a really good relationship. So they're really well organized, very, very well coached. But they've got a threat. And if you go and press them, they can miss it out. If you back off, they're comfortable and happy to play as well. I'm Purdue and Tanaka and Midfield are exceptional footballers as well and their own right. They're obviously involved in the first goal playing to each other. They've got so many strings to their bow. They're a really, really good team. And this is not a one-off with Leeds United. Is it Jamie? This is a trend that's building here. It's being going on for a while. We keep going back to that game, don't we? In December. We highlighted that before the game. The move up that table now, I think, to fifth since last December in terms of the Premier League. So in some ways, that should almost make Newcastle feel a little bit better about themselves tonight. It hasn't gone well. It's been a bad night. I feel like the whole world's watching on Monday night football. And they've just been beaten up by a really good Premier League team. We were on a completely different level physically. And when you're by, you're bringing young players to the Premier League, rather than from Europe, have come in. And it was probably a little lessen for them as well. But also for the staff and the club, that it's not going to be easy this season. It might have felt easy because the staff of the season's gone, okay, haven't lost the game. So really good performances there, at home to Liverpool, our way of spares. But that was almost like a back to reality in the Premier League. And it will be a tough season at times for Newcastle because, as I said, new manager, not a young players and their fans and the feet in the Premier League. And they've just beaten up. Did it feel like the first one was coming? Yeah, I think so. I mean, I thought they'd weathered that first 10, 15 minutes relatively well. Newcastle, but then it was growing and the pressure was increasing. We spoke about this at half time. And before the game, the Bourne's Carveley, when he heads it's a pass. And even under pressure, it's a headed pass. Bougles around it. And even though they lose it, like we said, half time. They're in great positions to be able to win the ball back and press again aggressively. Newcastle have nowhere to go other than they're going long. And I'm producing a really good position for the regain. So they compete for the first. And that's the other thing as well. When I've Jamie, you said the Jules, they're so good in the Jules. They land on the first and second ball so well. An aquifer, I didn't even mention him before, is a really good footballer. A really good player, a game in a 1v1 situation. All right, we thought Tanaka could have gone a little bit earlier with the hit and they'd get a bit of luck. But they aren't. They aren't. They have. They have got a great mix when you think of those two players in midfield. Tanaka and I'm producing. They would have a real highlight for me. Last season on the ball, technically. But it's fully listening to you, Robles. And there's so many managers coming into the league as well. An on Newcastle and a promoted team as such. But it's a new manager coming in. Everyone always speaks about the physicality. And I know it feels like we always say that. But it does feel like over the last year or two, it's jumped again. It really does feel like the size of the players. I sometimes look at Premier League tunnels now when players are going to come out. And I do look at it and think, I'm not sure I'd have been able to call. And I'm saying that seriously, I wasn't the biggest centre back. I was just on six foot. And I think I might be too small enough to play. You know, the actual power, the pace, the physicality of everything. It just goes up and up each year. It doesn't seem to stop. Yeah, the speed. It's the speed, I think. You would have though, because you'd have been, you'd have come through the same sort of system and the same things that the last half of our days have gone through. So you'd have been able to. I wouldn't be too small. I wouldn't be too small. But it's quicker. So the distance is that you showed it, you know, just at the end there. It is important, the total distance, of course it is. But it's the speed. That's not changed loads over quite a period of time. I don't think. But it's the speed they're doing it now. What is, what is the, will you keep talking about the jewels? Now that's always being important. You're in headers, tackles, all that type of thing. But is the amount of jewels you can test in again? Is that going up all the time? I think, well, a lot of teams now, because they're pressing so aggressively, it is forcing teams to go a little bit longer again now, isn't it? So then you're inevitably going to get more first and second balls again. I think when teams were maybe dropping off to more mid blocks, and it was a little bit more build up and a bit more controlled football, there's not as many teams as you think about in the league now that will have that style of play, that real control, and dominate again with 70% of the ball. It's probably less of it now. So there's more jewels. And so your positioning is really, really important. So you want good positioning when you've got the ball to be able to link and play and penetrate. But also, when you lose it, you need people around it to be able to try and win it ball. Win it back quickly, which leads to the really... I suppose you can't afford when you're playing at Ellen Road to be giving the ball away in the edge of your own box as we saw it build up to the second goal. Yeah, we did. But listen, I said this to Robert as the game was going on. No matter what team I'm watching, if I say a young player playing and make a mistake, I really feel for no matter who the team is. But he wasn't expected to be on this early, I guess. No, he wasn't. I think Gonzales had to go up. It's a poor pass, but listen, your play is making mistakes. Hopefully, I'm sure you'll learn from it. He's coming, he's just taught he can... He just hasn't punched it in hard enough. But for me, this goal is about cavalry. But Rob, you were talking about the actual rotation. So, before we get there, we'll just stop it now. So, that is your... Right, centre back. Right, centre back. And that. Right, wing back. Is your right wing back. So, there was a lot of that going on. It's not just the case of getting up to Calvert Lewing and getting on the second goal. There's a lot of rotations going on when we were watching Leeds. Obviously, we just highlighted the goals of halftime and we're doing that right now. But there's a lot more to it than just knocking up to the big guy and him holding the ball. It's the risk they play with, the numbers that they get in the box. Again, a lot of stats and numbers now, the more numbers you commit forward and getting to dangerous areas and the better chance you've got of scoring and creating chances. These do that really, really well. How do you coach this Rob? Is this just repetition? Getting people in the right places when the ball is here, boggling you need to get in the box? Well, I think now he's probably his own dynamic a little bit to this role as well. He's been doing it for a long time. We came up against this and we're planning against this last year. He gets on that last line as much as anyone. Now, from that position. And obviously there, now the re-gain, OK, they're in good positions, those set up, ready to regain it and ready to get in the box again. But now he's got... It's a bit like what we talked about with Munoz earlier on. From that wing-back position. He plays on all three of those lines. But because the way he leads Bill and James Justin would go higher on almost players as an orthodox fallback, it pushes Bobo right into that last line and whether he's outside or inside the game, as he was there. That's almost... It's almost... Yeah, it's almost... If you might let us into the opposition box tonight, and there's only one player who had more than that. And that's the fellow he took the goal off. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But listen, can I just... I absolutely love this. I'm fascinated by people who've got good springs. Because I actually think I had decent springs for myself. But certainly not what Calvert Lewin's got. Now, forget the ball. Just watch Calvert Lewin and Bogel as they both come in together. Bogel's coming in now. He's running. He's running towards it to make a jump. Calvert Lewin is still in the air now with both feet. He's made a little step. Calvert Lewin's feet now land. He hasn't landed yet. He's left foot going to land now. So Calvert Lewin for almost a standing jump is not running. Bogel's running. Calvert Lewin is doing this from a standing jump. Two-fourth jump. Look how high Calvert Lewin gets from a standing jump on two feet. Bogel's running. Jump off that right foot. He's still climbing. He's still going up in the air and he's going to meet this ball at the highest point. I want to stop it now. Look where Calvert Lewin's feet are. How high in the air he is. And that ball goal is so fortunate. We're laughing because we can see that Jaden is watching the analysis. Jaden, I thought it was a brilliant finish from you. Thank you. I'll take that. I didn't know anything about it. Nothing about it. But Jaden, you've got to ask her. You said you didn't know nothing about it. But I think you got told a half-time about the situation and it looked like that no one really wanted to give dominant news. So where the referee had to give them the news. Yeah, I said to the ref. Yeah, I don't fancy telling him, especially at half-time. It was no different after the game. So he was a bit raging to be fair. Yeah, it's happy. He's happy with the points. This is you here, Jaden. You're just telling your team. I think you're telling no rocker for that. You can never guess what's happened. And did you see this? This is Dominic's reaction with the referee. Oh. Oh, no. Yeah, he's raging. Yeah, he's raging with a goal, but he's happy with the points. Jaden, you've just been looking at your goal and your role and obviously you've got the goal. But me and Rob Edwards here tonight. I mean, it's sort of fascinated with your role in the team. And how much rotations were going on at times. You've found yourself on the last line sometimes. You've found yourself at right wing. How much work is going into that on the training ground? Yeah, it's quite a bit of work. It's just having an understanding on the players that you're playing with. You know, when we've got them up there in the middle. He's going to compete for everything that goes along. So having runners off of him, players underneath him to support to get underneath the ball. It's massive for us. And yeah, it paid off well tonight. Jaden, it's Rob here now, well played tonight. I thought you were outstanding, fully deserved the win as a team. But you yourself, full of running. You look like you're really, really enjoying your football and playing at the top of your game. We came up against you last year. And obviously you were finding the same sorts of positions that Jamie was just talking to you about now. Jamie's maybe playing as an orthodox right back and then you can hire up. Can you talk to a little bit more about when you might find yourself on the outside and then why you might then drift in or find yourself almost making that run? Like in number 10, would you explain a little bit more around that? Yeah, it's just to do with the rotation. Like today, JJ was going a bit higher on wider. And sometimes it leaves the pocket open for me to go into. If we go a bit more direct, you know, Dom usually occupies two centre backs. So there's a bit of space in behind as well. Just getting a feel for where the ball might go. Different patterns and different movements that we work on in training to get an extra yard and a bit of space. Overall, though, JJ, a really emphatic victory. Just talk us through that first half when you felt like you really had Newcastle United on the ropes. Yeah, you know, we wanted to start well. We wanted to get the fans on board and get them going because it's really tough when they like that. And we've done that to start with and then it was just about trying to maintain it. Keep the energy high. It was a tough game. A lot of running for everyone. Regardless of the score line, it was a really tough game physically. And you know, the top side. So we wanted to stay on it because you know they can hurt you at any point. The guys have been really praising you. Not just for tonight, but for your contributions from really the second half of last season as well. What do you think as a group? It is possible for Leeds United this season. Yeah, at the moment, I think just take it game by game. I think that's the important thing. Not to get too carried away. You know, everyone's ambitious in their own ways. But as a group, we want to just stay focused and take it game by game. All right, Jayden. Thank you very much. Listen, you've scored in back-to-back games for the first time in your career, I believe. So you take that goal and you run with it, my friend. Thank you very much. Jayden, congratulations. Thank you so much. Cheers. Thank you. So Jayden takes the goal. Dominic Halbert Lewin did score one. He, of course, wanted to double. This was the moment that you just saw there. We're at halftime. The referee broke the news to him. The first one. The first one. Oh, no. Taken off him. He would not let it lie. They took it off me. They took it off me. And at full time. They took it off me. Now let's get more reaction to today's game on the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Welcome back to my dinner at Football. We're talking about the battle to beat the drop and focusing on the three promoted sides. We've made different starts, whole city, magnificent so far. On this list as the amongst the best starts we've seen by promoted sides. Eight points on the board from their first four games. And this was the team. I think everyone was writing off before a ball was kicked because of the way they got to the Premier League because they weren't that impressive in the championship last season. Did you see this coming, Rob? No, in all honesty. Well done to them. They've been incredible. Obviously it is early days, but the fact now that they've taken points off Manchester United and Chelsea away as well now. And the consistency that they're showing, the stubbornness that they're showing without the ball and in terms of giving up chances. And they are creating chances well in the way they do it. It's almost because of the way they got promoted. They're not having to change as much as maybe some of the other teams when they have gone through. And it comes to them. Direct. Yeah, but fast attacks, playing to their strengths. Ollium at Bernie there, we just talked about it with Dominic Calvert-Lewin. You know, just bumping and being strong. I know Ryan Giles really well and I've worked with him a number of times. It's great to see him doing so well and playing to his strengths. He's brilliant at delivering crosses and especially on the run as well. So he's involved in the goal and creating a chance, the corner that leads to the next goal. It's this interesting here, Robin's into Chelsea's tactic. We highlighted this against Arsenal, where they put four up. Yeah. And, you know, I just think sometimes you put four up, that means they've got to bring players back. But then I almost think the man-marking situation in the boxing does so much more space for the attack and play to move. Because I sometimes think we get an attack in corner. There's that many bodies there. It's hard to actually get a run or actually move. We've got your thoughts on that actually. We're always going to give something away. First of all, whatever you do, you bring everyone back, then you might be giving up. People are saying, why can't you leave one up and try and take another player back or give us a counter-attacking threat? The obviously feel is the best opportunity to free up more space in the box to maybe there's numbers that will suggest this as well from that point of view. But take some of the bigger threats out. Trusting the players, the big defenders to be able to do their job and then deal with it with that first contact and then give them a huge counter-attacking threat as well with the players that they're leaving up. And one thing they have to give up, you mentioned you've got to give something up. Edge of the box. Edge of the box, definitely. So they'll talk about that and they'll work on it. And I'll say, look, if anything comes out, a bit like what we were talking about with the long throw and then dropping out to that position, who's getting out there quick to go out to close it down, it's going to be the nearest man throwing themself in front of it. But obviously, yeah, they're not able to affect it and obviously it's a brilliant goal from Holes perspective. Getting the first contact first of all and then following it in. But you're going to give something away. It wasn't just that though, was it? I mean, this is Chelsea playing at home. Chelsea team that has been so expensively assembled that people have been talking about as possible title contenders. How much confidence will they take from this? Loads. Loads. We went there early in the season as well with Luke and it was difficult night for us. We lost three. At home, it was a different game. We lost three, too. And we really gave it to them. But to do this away from home, a newly promoted team. And like I said, a team that's not necessarily going to have loads and loads in the ball that they are effective when they do winning back. Here he is now on the run. That is him. That is Jailo at his best. What a chance to win the game. It's an amazing chance. A great cross. Again, arriving with good numbers in the box as well showing real intent. Not just sitting back on trying to, you know, for the draw as well. They're going for it to try and win. Here's a character as well. And there's Ryan Giles, top of open play crosses this season by some distance as well. We were thinking about your loot and team that you came up with and looking at the way that whole city came up as well. You've talked about the pace of getting forward, the physicality that's on the pitch, winning those jules. But also the quality from that same position of the pitch. You had Ryan Giles, but also Alfie Dowty. We did. We were slightly different. I think they were really good on the counter attack last year and getting success. We were different. We would really press teams. We would play fast and direct football. But we would smother teams and try and keep the ball as far away from the goal as possible. Whether the opposition had it or whether we had it. And we create chances with, yeah, with crosses, numbers in the box. They were really good at counter attacking. It suits Giles down to the ground. That was why we brought him to the Premier League. His athleticism, the stuff that we're seeing there. That's what we were expecting from him. Alfie stepped up and obviously we had the two of them to go to war and go toe to toe. And almost the best man will play. And Alfie did great that year. And Giles would have been frustrated and didn't play as much. But he's matured again. He's learned again. He's gone to a hole. He's done really, really well. And now he's doing it in the Premier League where he's always wanted to be. But the playing to his strength is really quick. And on the run, that cross that he's got when he gets it right is really, really dangerous. I heard this theory that whole city, it's different for them that it is for Ipswich Town and for Coventry. And Coventry a bit like sort of leads the previous season getting, you know, almost a hundred points. Whereas whole city, it was through the playoffs. They knew they had a lot to do. And they, I think you said it before, they're almost playing the same way as they were in the championship. Yeah, I think that same message that the manager will be giving them will help. The same style and same way of playing. Clearly it's getting results at the moment. So I've total buying and belief from the players. But they're not then having to search for a different way. I felt this as well with Luton, like possibly I'm not saying it will, because I'm not them. But Frank Lampard might be having to figure out a different way. Because they were so dominant really Coventry last year. Maybe like Burnley were the year that we got promoted with Luton as well. And it's so different and so much harder in the Premier League. Maybe that style. So you're trying to walk on from Luton more. A possession-based team, we don't need games to basically be an out of possession. Maybe having to defend a lot of teams. More so Jamie, definitely. Coventry were really, I thought they were really intelligent last year as well. Because they mixed the game up well. They weren't a team that just dominated every game. They played forward quickly as well and utilized their strengths. They didn't have to have more of the ball to win games. I thought they were really good. They could build and control the game. But they could hit you quickly and get the ball forward quickly. Fast attacks with quality as well. So they could play a number of different ways. They've had difficult games as well. Coventry. They have played Arsenal. They've played City. I watched them closely against City as well. And they have three big chances. It could have been different on a different day. They could have been different. But it's not quite gone there way at the moment where it has gone whole. So they've got the belief. They've got that buoyancy and energy around them at the moment. Now, Frank Lampard will be working really hard with his staff to keep the belief and the motivation and the players. Because they will be doing a lot of good things. They are doing a lot of good things. They did great things last year as well. And it took us to the fifth game to get our first result with Luton. And why not for them? It will come. There's also that balance, isn't it, between loyalty to the group that got you there. And thinking we've got to be ready and equipped for the Premier League. Has that been easier in some respects for Gary O'Neill at Ipswich Town? Because he doesn't really have any loyalty to the players that got it which promoted. Because he's just coming in this summer. He's new in. I mean, yeah, another one. Gary's got a great start and he's doing really, really well in the short period of time that he's been in. Obviously had a preseason to work with the players. But you're right, you're right. But again, for belief, two victories early on. It's just an late win as well now. They'll be feeling so much confidence from this. But I watched them again as well against Liverpool. And I thought, all right, they lost the game 2-0. But after that first 10 minutes where there were a couple of goals down. I thought they played very, very well as well. Gary knows the Premier League well now. He's done a good number of games in the league. He's got a real good understanding of what will get results. He's done it before with Wolves and keeping Anne Bournemouth and keeping them in the Premier League and more with Wolves. And they've got a couple of goal scorers. They have. They've got a threat there. That was Canny, wasn't it from Fleming? It could be a really good bit of business, I think. Again, another one. A handful, a bit more of an old school of likes to use his body and get a bit of someone to play off. But he did really well last year, obviously in a difficult year for Burnley. So I think you're right. I think you hit the nail on the head there. Gary will be able to now. It comes in with fresh eyes. Real clear. This is what I want to be able to do. I know what gets success in terms of staying in the league for a newly promoted team. But yeah, you won't be feeling that loyalty like maybe other managers will do when they have taken a team up. So two brilliant starts in terms of points from Lipswitch and Hull. And they should feel very, very hopeful about the season ahead now. It's so hard to get six or eight points. It can take six or eight, ten weeks at times. Well, 100%. And that will make Frank Lampard and Coventry feel even worse, won't it, Jamie? Will there come a point, do you think, where he almost goes, OK, I've tried it with the ones who have got me promoted. And now I'm going to start to fresh. I'm not sure they have that many options. Yeah, listen, you see that result looks really poor. But this was a game where anybody could have got the phase goal here. And let's not forget the corner pro against the really top Premier League team in Brighton. They're a really good outfit. And the fact that they never took their chance, we're probably not quite clinical enough, meant that they go one nail down and then this just takes the game away from them. I think there was a chance as well just before this in the second half. We've seen some chances Coventry had in the first half. But he had one, I think, very early in the second half as well. Around the edge of the box. And then listen, the game just gets away from him. OK, and I think it's probably Thomas makes a poor challenge there. But then a couple of the goals are too, you know, very good. I mean, Louis Stung scored another goal. You do get punished. You know, you do get punished this level more so than the championship. But they are creating chances. I know they haven't scored yet. But they are creating chances. I mean, three brilliant ones last week at the Etihad. I mean, that doesn't happen really in the championship. So when you're a Coventry player and it feels like everything the opposition hits is hitting the back of your net. How do you as the boss manage to keep everyone's heads up and keep trying to convince them and give them that belief? You remind them how well they've done in the first place. And all right, you've lost and everyone, everyone looks at the result these days. And they think, oh, he's doing great or he's failing. It's not, it's not that. You can get promoted and be a brilliant manager. And all of a sudden, then you lose a few games in the Premier League and you're getting judged against Michele's Arsenal now or other teams like that. And all of a sudden now, it's not that they're competing well. I know the other day the score line didn't suggest that. But, you know, it can happen as we've just alluded to in the Premier League. They compete really well against Arsenal and Manchester City. You remind them of the performances. You remind them of how well they've done before. And they will be looking at little tweaks all the time, now whether that is a new player that's coming in or whether that's something that they want to shift or they need to get better on some of the basics or, you know, whether that's set plays or we need to play forward a bit quicker. Or whatever it might be, you'll be looking at that little edge that they can get. We had to change, Luke and after about 12 games, we had a game at Brentford where we were too passive and I didn't really like us. And then after that, we've got to be, we've got to be us here. If we're going to go down, we've got to go down, swinging and giving everything. So against us on the next game, right, we are total man for man. We're going to show the best side of us and go for it. And that was a bit of a, a bit of a loot and two point. Oh, if you like. So we had to adapt and invite the players receive that. Yeah, they loved it because it was, it was positive. And it was me saying, look, I don't care if it's us or we're going to go for them, you know. And, and it was at home and kind of worth rose, obviously a little bit different. But we use, we use that to our advantage. And then they'll be looking for that, they'll be looking for that. The fans will be totally with them. They'll love Frank Lampar for what he's given them. Great amateur even though. They're loving for what he's given them. He'll have the players right there still because of what he's given those lads as well in terms of promotion, the playing in the Premier League. And the new ones that come in will love him as well because of the opportunity. He's given them the chance that, that they've got now. So he'll have the players right there. And him and his staff are really, really good. And they'll know there's areas that we can improve on. And obviously they'll, whether that's giving one or two chances away that they wouldn't have done before. Or how are they going to try and exploit the opposition team in different ways. Can I ask you something? Sometimes when you come up as a pro to team or as a manager, you're used to winning. You've almost got to get used to losing in some ways. And then almost every pro to team will go on a run at some stage in the season. Maybe you don't win for seven or eight games or something. I mean, what's it like as a manager? Yes, it is. You've never had that, have you? No, but the thing you're trying to make is, do you almost have that feeling that you think you can see yourself winning another game? You don't know how you're going to win a game. I mean, I think with two different experiences, the two experiences I've had in the Premier League have been quite different. Actually, Luton getting up and the expectation was really, let's be honest, was low. And so it was almost a little bit more of a shot to nothing. And we could go and be brave and go and be us. And I know this sounds silly to people listening. I think, what is he on about? But maybe losing three, two against Chelsea or losing three, two against Villa, four, three against Arsenal. Going up to Newcastle and drawing four, all. That's like a win for what we are and how we're performing and competing against these top teams and managers and players. So the players take a lot from that, and we've got to then, all right, yeah, we try and show the things we've improved, but we need to improve. But Lads, you're doing so well. And really, really try and be as positive as possible, which I'm sure Frank and Joe Edwards and all of his staff, and they'll be doing now. And so you can go a period of time. And if look, if it goes on and on and on and on and on and on, then all right, there's, there's, there's questions. With walls, it was different when we first came in. There was, you know, it arrived and it was difficult, you know, two points from 11 games. And it was, it was, it took some time then to try and get it to where we wanted to become competitive. And that bits, that bits hard because it was, it was, it was different. We hadn't taken the group up. We've inherited a group that's, that's, that's low at the moment. And, and that, that one was a different challenge again, which we knew it was going to be really difficult going in. And that bit was probably a little bit tougher, but we knew why we were there. We were there because we're in a difficult spot. So consistent messages, you know, making sure that you get the train right, the meetings right, and the energy needs to be good. And if my energy drops, then I've seen it towards the end of the loop. And I know then that's that can affect the whole, the whole group as well. So my energy, our energies, the head coach on a manager, everyone's looking at you. It needs to be right, that belief. When we stand in front of that group of players, it has to be there. I have to believe totally that we can go and win. We can go to the Etihad, we can go to Anfield, we can go and win. And then you can see the nods from the players and, you know, in the meetings. And you can see it when you go out on the train and pitch them. You can see the shakes. I know. At times, times closed. At times closed. At times closed. At times closed. At times closed.
