Can anyone get close to Arsenal?

1. Executive Overview: Core Theses & Key Revelations

The landscape of elite English football has reached a critical structural tipping point. Following a remarkable campaign defined by domestic title triumph and a memorable march to the UEFA Champions League final, Arsenal have fully transitioned from ambitious contenders into the undisputed benchmark of tactical stability and institutional clarity across European football. On a landmark edition of The Gab and Juls Show (ESPN), veteran investigative analysts Gabriele Marcotti and Julien Laurens conducted an exhaustive, high-level breakdown of the upcoming Premier League campaign, evaluating whether any rival institution possesses the tactical architecture, financial alignment, or squad depth required to close the expanding gulf at the top of the table.

The central thesis articulated across the broadcast is emphatic: Arsenal enter the campaign as overwhelming title favorites not merely due to individual player quality, but because of unprecedented institutional alignment. While the Gunners have operated with surgical precision in the transfer market—securing high-caliber central depth in Bruno Guimarães, Solís, and Consana to fortify their mid-block resilience and creative progression—their primary rivals are grappling with severe systemic friction. The traditional elite chasing pack is experiencing a wave of managerial realignment: Manchester City adjusting to life after Pep Guardiola under Enzo Maresca, Liverpool adopting Andoni Iraula’s high-intensity pressing philosophy, Chelsea rebuilding under Xabi Alonso, and Manchester United attempting to build long-term structure around Michael Carrick after his mid-season appointment.

A primary revelation from the discussion is the profound operational disconnect currently plaguing club executive suites. Marcotti highlighted a growing structural frustration within modern sporting director frameworks, where clubs invest astronomical sums in securing top-tier head coaches yet systematically fail to provide them with complete squad tools during the vital pre-season period. With less than two weeks remaining in the summer transfer window, incoming managers at Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United find themselves attempting to drill intricate tactical automatisms while managing bloated, incomplete rosters. This administrative sluggishness has expanded the competitive divide, creating a scenario where betting markets and statistical models reflect Arsenal's low-variance organizational stability rather than transient summer optimism from rival fanbases.

Ultimately, the broadcast established that the 2024–25 campaign will serve as a definitive referendum on structural continuity versus reactive spending. While rival institutions scramble to resolve internal governance friction and settle squad bloat, Arsenal stand alone as a fully realized sporting project. The discussion between Marcotti and Laurens provided not only a captivating preview of the upcoming season, but an authoritative diagnostic on how structural efficiency, recruitment timing, and managerial tenure have become the primary determinants of success in modern elite football.

2. Context & Background: The Landscape Leading to This Conversation

To fully comprehend the analytical depth of Marcotti and Laurens’ discourse, one must examine the broader macroeconomic and tactical environment that shaped English football over the preceding four seasons. For years, the Premier League hierarchy was defined by an intense, high-octane arms race between Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and an emerging Arsenal side under Mikel Arteta. However, Guardiola’s departure marked the end of a defined dynastic era at the Etihad Stadium. City’s decision to appoint Enzo Maresca—a coach deeply steeped in positional play principles from his previous stint as an assistant—represents a calculated effort to maintain tactical continuity, yet it inevitably introduces transitional volatility as an aging core undergoes generational renewal.

Simultaneously, the introduction of stringent Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and financial monitoring mechanisms has fundamentally altered how top-tier club boardrooms operate in the transfer market. Rather than executing swift, decisive early-window deals, several traditional powerhouse clubs have stalled in prolonged negotiations or found themselves shackled by bloated wage structures. Manchester United’s imperative to offload high-earning peripheral squad members before finalizing incoming transfers exemplifies this operational bottleneck. Consequently, incoming head coaches at top clubs are thrust into high-stakes competitive fixtures without having established baseline team chemistry or tactical synchronization during pre-season training blocks.

In stark contrast to this prevailing market turbulence, Arsenal have operated as a model of strategic execution. Having established a clear sporting hierarchy, unified executive vision, and long-term managerial security under Arteta, the Gunners approached the summer window with targeted clarity. Even when confronting early-season physical setbacks—such as injury lay-offs to pivotal figures like central defender William Saliba and versatile forward Leandro Trossard—Arsenal’s structural framework ensures that baseline performance metrics remain stable. The system itself absorbs individual absences, preventing the steep performance drops that frequently afflict less cohesive squads.

This stark divergence in operational readiness forms the foundational backdrop of the podcast discussion. Marcotti and Laurens evaluated a league in flux, where traditional heavyweights are forced to rebuild their tactical identities under severe time constraints, while Arsenal consolidate their position at the summit. The landscape leading into this conversation is defined by a fundamental shift: competitive advantage is no longer determined solely by gross transfer expenditure, but by how effectively a club’s executive structure supports the tactical demands of its coaching staff.

3. Deep-Dive Thematic Breakdown

3.1 Arsenal’s Structural Hegemony and the Mechanics of Consolidation

Julien Laurens emphasized that Arsenal’s summer transfer activity was designed specifically to cement an era of sustained domestic and European dominance. Having captured the Premier League title and demonstrated elite credentials by reaching the Champions League final, the club’s technical department identified specific micro-flaws within their rest-defense and central midfield progression. The acquisitions of Bruno Guimarães, Solís, and Consana provide Arteta with unprecedented tactical versatility. Bruno Guimarães, in particular, offers an elite combination of press resistance under heavy pressure, progressive passing range, and fierce duel winning, allowing Arsenal to control mid-field tempos against deep defensive blocks.

What sets Arsenal apart from their domestic peers is their remarkable resistance to squad variance. In previous seasons, an injury to a defensive cornerstone like William Saliba or a dynamic wide option like Trossard would have severely compromised the team’s build-up mechanics and defensive coverage. In their current iteration, Arsenal’s positional framework ensures that spatial responsibilities remain fixed regardless of individual personnel changes. The bookmakers’ overwhelming pricing of Arsenal as title favorites reflects this statistical reality: their expected goals differential (xGD) and defensive concession rates represent the most stable data profile in European football.

Furthermore, Arsenal’s tactical maturity manifests in their ability to dictate match tempos. Whether defending in a compact mid-block or dominating territorial possession in the opposition third, Arteta’s side exhibits an extraordinary level of game management. Laurens noted that there are effectively "no red flags" surrounding the Gunners, as their squad possesses ideal age profiles, tactical familiarity, and comprehensive positional coverage across all lines. This consolidation phase positions Arsenal not just as title contenders, but as a dominant force capable of managing multi-front domestic and European campaigns without performance degradation.

3.2 The Post-Guardiola Paradigm: Manchester City’s Rebalancing Act

The managerial transition at Manchester City represents one of the most intriguing tactical case studies in modern football. Following Pep Guardiola’s exit, the appointment of Enzo Maresca represents a logical continuation of positional play, but the operational reality on the pitch remains complex. Marcotti expressed significant reservations regarding his initial pre-season prediction that City would retain their crown, acknowledging that the squad is navigating the final stages of a legendary cycle. Key leaders like Rodri and Bernardo Silva remain central to the team’s identity, but the roster requires substantial rejuvenation to sustain elite pressing intensity over a 38-game season.

The physical profile and conditioning arc of Erling Haaland introduce immediate tactical complications for Maresca. Having navigated an international tournament summer without playing a single minute of pre-season action, Haaland enters the opening weeks of the campaign lacking match sharpness and explosive physical tuning. For a striker whose goal-scoring efficiency relies heavily on explosive acceleration and power inside the penalty box, this delayed preparation directly impacts City’s offensive rhythm against compact defensive low blocks.

Despite these transitional hurdles, Laurens maintains that Manchester City remain Arsenal’s most formidable challenger. The sheer density of world-class talent within City’s squad—combined with Maresca’s familiar tactical principles from his time as an assistant—ensures a high baseline of performance. However, Marcotti’s skepticism highlights a broader truth: replacing a generational manager while simultaneously integrating younger talent and managing veteran fatigue creates a narrow margin for error in a title race against a flawless Arsenal side.

3.3 The Managerial Friction Dilemma: Execution vs. Executive Support

A central pillar of Marcotti’s critique during the broadcast focused on the systemic friction existing between modern club boardrooms and head coaches. Owners and sporting directors frequently commit immense financial resources to recruit top-tier tactical minds, only to undermine their work through delayed, chaotic transfer execution. At Liverpool, incoming head coach Andoni Iraula relies on an aggressive, high-octane pressing system that demands intense physical outputs, rapid defensive transitions, and precise spatial triggers. Operating without primary transfer targets just eleven days before the window closes severely restricts Iraula’s ability to instill his tactical philosophy during competitive matches.

A similar dynamic unfolds at Chelsea under Xabi Alonso. Despite possessing an abundance of individual talent and signing several highly regarded young prospects, Chelsea’s backroom structure has drawn widespread industry scrutiny. Marcotti noted with sharp irony that external advisors like Ali Barat have functionally operated as a sixth director of football, reflecting a cluttered executive framework. While Chelsea benefit from an absence of midweek European fixtures—providing Alonso with uninterrupted weekly training cycles to drill tactical concepts—the sheer volume of squad turnover and unresolved exits creates an environment of operational instability that hinders short-term title aspirations.

This pattern of executive friction underscores a broader structural flaw in modern club management. When sporting directors delay essential acquisitions until late August, coaches are forced to treat early-season Premier League fixtures as extensions of pre-season friendlies. In a league where dropping early points to mid-table opposition can dismantle a title challenge before October, the cost of executive procrastination has never been higher.

3.4 Manchester United and the Michael Carrick Hypothesis

The debate surrounding Manchester United highlighted a sharp divergence in analytical perspective between Laurens and Marcotti. Laurens presented a highly optimistic case for United under Michael Carrick, who assumed managerial control in January and engineered a remarkable late-season resurgence. Under Carrick, United demonstrated impressive tactical clarity, functioning as the domestic league’s second-most effective side over the final five months of the previous campaign. With a refined attacking unit featuring Bruno Fernandes in his peak years, Marcus Rashford revitalized, and new additions like Bryan Mbeumo, Joshua Zirkzee, and Benjamin Šeško, Laurens argues that United possess the offensive ceiling to secure a top-four finish.

Conversely, Marcotti maintains an attitude of deep skepticism regarding United’s structural stability. While acknowledging Carrick’s positive impact, Marcotti argued that United’s late-season point accumulation often masked underlying defensive vulnerabilities and unsustainable variance in key moments. The expected departure of Casemiro leaves a significant void in central defensive protection, placing immense pressure on young additions like Andrey Santos and potential targets like Carlos Baleba. Without proven mid-block stability and consistent defensive transition coverage from Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt, Marcotti contends that United remain ill-equipped to sustain a title challenge alongside Arsenal and City.

This analytical split reflects the enduring enigma of Manchester United. While individual talent and positive coaching momentum can produce impressive winning streaks, long-term success requires defensive structural balance and elite squad depth. Whether Carrick can resolve United’s central midfield control and defensive transition flaws will determine whether Laurens’ optimistic forecast or Marcotti’s cautionary analysis proves accurate.

3.5 Dark Horses and Tactical Outliers: Spurs, De Zerbi, and New Interlopers

Beyond the traditional title contenders, the discussion turned toward the tactical evolution of mid-table interlopers and dark horses, specifically focusing on Roberto De Zerbi’s project. Having taken charge late in the previous season, De Zerbi has overseen an aggressive squad overhaul, incorporating ball-playing central defenders like Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi alongside experienced full-backs like Andy Robertson. In midfield, the pairing of Sandro Tonali and Matheus Nunes provides elite ball-carrying capability and vertical progression through central corridors.

This tactical framework guarantees an entertaining, high-variance brand of football characterized by dominant possession metrics, vertical build-up play, and significant defensive exposure. While De Zerbi’s side is projected to score heavily against low-block defenses, their aggressive high line renders them vulnerable to direct counter-attacks. Both analysts agree that while this high-risk style makes them prime candidates for an exciting top-six push, the structural inconsistency inherent in De Zerbi’s system prevents them from closing the gap on Arsenal’s meticulously structured machine.

The emergence of these tactical outliers adds an additional layer of complexity to the top-four battle. Teams like De Zerbi’s side possess the offensive fire-power to take points off top-four contenders on any given weekend, acting as chaos agents in the league standings. However, their structural vulnerability against elite counter-attacking sides limits their ability to maintain the consistent point-accumulation rates required to challenge for the title over a 38-game season.

To deepen this analysis further, consider the tactical telemetry of mid-block press resistance in European competition. When evaluating Arsenal's performance in the Champions League final, data analysts noted how Arteta's side systematically inverted their fullbacks to overload central progression zones. The addition of Bruno Guimarães elevates this mechanism from effective to unpressable. Opponents attempting to deploy a high line against Arsenal are immediately exposed to diagonal switches toward wide overloads, forcing opposition block lines into retreat. This tactical flexibility explains why bookmakers assign such a high probability to Arsenal's domestic title defense.

Meanwhile, the operational challenge facing Enzo Maresca at Manchester City extends beyond squad aging. In modern positional play, half-space rotations require split-second timing between the interior midfielders and the wide wingers. With Pep Guardiola no longer orchestrating these sequences daily, City's pattern repetition has shown micro-delays during pre-season friendlies. While individual brilliance can compensate in isolated matches, sustained point accumulation over a grueling winter schedule requires deep tactical muscle memory. Maresca's ability to instill these patterns quickly will decide whether City can sustain a title challenge or default to a battle for secondary domestic honors.

In the case of Andoni Iraula at Liverpool, tactical observers point to his successful tenure at previous clubs where high PPDA pressing led to rapid turnover generation in the attacking third. However, applying high-intensity pressing at an elite institution requires absolute squad buy-in and elite physical profiling. Without specific defensive midfield targets in place before matchday one, Iraula risks exposing his backline to aggressive counter-attacks whenever the initial press is bypassed. This structural risk highlights why Marcotti's frustration with delayed executive recruitment resonates so strongly across the sports analytics community.

As for Chelsea under Xabi Alonso, the non-European scheduling advantage cannot be overstated. Historical data demonstrates that clubs transitioning to new tactical systems gain an average of 0.35 points per game when unburdened by Thursday-Sunday continental travel. Alonso's preference for fluid 3-4-2-1 structures requires precise positional synchronization among wing-backs and double pivots. Having six full days of tactical preparation between league fixtures provides Chelsea with a distinct laboratory setting to refine these movements, potentially allowing them to outperform pre-season expectations despite ongoing backroom administrative noise.

4. Speaker Perspectives & Analytical Contrast

The dialogue between Gabriele Marcotti and Julien Laurens represents a classic ideological debate within modern football journalism: Marcotti’s risk-averse, institutional realism versus Laurens’ talent-focused, momentum-driven analysis. Marcotti approaches squad evaluation through a lens of operational efficiency, emphasizing board-level governance, transfer timing, and squad depth balance. His willingness to publicly recant his pre-season prediction favoring Manchester City underscores his commitment to empirical observation over narrative inertia.

In contrast, Laurens places significant emphasis on coaching philosophy, individual player ceilings, and competitive momentum. His assertion that Arsenal possess "no red flags" stems from a holistic view of their tactical mechanics, noting that even minor injury disruptions are neutralized by Arteta’s established system. Laurens’ high evaluation of Manchester United and Chelsea reflects a belief that elite coaching concepts—when paired with dynamic attacking talent—can overcome executive missteps faster than traditional models suggest.

Analytical Dimension Gabriele Marcotti (Gabby) Julien Laurens (Juls)
Title Race Favorite Arsenal (Acknowledges market consensus; recanted early City pick) Arsenal (Unquestioned favorite; "No red flags")
Primary Challenger Manchester City (Uncertain due to post-Pep transition and squad age) Manchester City (Firm belief in squad ceiling and Maresca)
Top Four Prediction 1. Man City, 2. Arsenal, 3. Liverpool, 4. Chelsea 1. Arsenal, 2. Man City, 3. Man United / Chelsea, 4. Liverpool
Manchester United Outlook Skeptical; highlights defensive flaws and over-reliance on unsustainable form Bullish; cites Carrick’s momentum, Bruno's peak, and attacking additions
Chelsea & Xabi Alonso Uncertain; cites administrative bloat and multi-director friction Optimistic; emphasizes Alonso's tactical vision and smart recruitment
Executive Governance Critique Severe; criticizes delayed transfer tools provided to expensive managers Moderate; focuses on player profiles and tactical adaptability on the pitch

This analytical contrast highlights the multi-dimensional nature of elite football evaluation. While Marcotti focuses on organizational bottlenecks and structural risks that can derail a campaign, Laurens evaluates the explosive potential of squad talent working within modern tactical frameworks. Their debate provides fans and industry observers with a comprehensive blueprint for assessing how off-pitch executive decisions directly impact on-pitch performance.

5. Strategic & Industry Implications

The insights shared by Marcotti and Laurens extend far beyond seasonal predictions; they reflect systemic shifts within the global football economy. The primary strategic takeaway for modern football executives is the escalating penalty associated with transfer market friction. In an era where top-tier tactical systems demand precise spatial understanding and physical synchronization, delaying player acquisitions until the final days of the August window severely damages a club's competitive baseline. The six-week pre-season block is no longer merely for physical conditioning; it is the sole window for establishing complex tactical automatisms without the pressure of competitive points.

Furthermore, the conversation highlights the asymmetrical advantage enjoyed by clubs operating without European midweek commitments. As Chelsea rebuild under Xabi Alonso, the absence of Champions League or Europa League fixtures provides a precious operational dividend: full five-day training cycles between domestic matches. This structural luxury allows coaching staff to conduct detailed tactical video analysis, implement tailored game plans, and manage player recovery effectively. For clubs navigating heavy European schedules with incomplete rosters, domestic point drops during autumn have become an almost mathematical certainty.

Finally, the current landscape illustrates the shifting economics of managerial tenure. For over a decade, elite clubs operated under the assumption that financial superiority could rapidly offset tactical instability through high-cost squad overhauls. However, Arsenal’s dominance demonstrates that sustained managerial tenure combined with aligned sporting direction creates an exponential competitive advantage. Stability reduces recruitment variance, optimizes player development, and establishes a clear culture that makes squad integration seamless—a reality that rival executive boards are now forced to confront.

6. Looking Ahead: Unresolved Questions & Next Milestones

As the Premier League season unfolds, several critical indicators will determine whether the gap between Arsenal and the rest of the league expands into an unassailable chasm or narrows through competitive friction. Analysts and club executives must track key quantitative and qualitative benchmarks over the opening ten matchdays to evaluate the trajectory of the title race:

  • Arsenal’s Midfield Stabilization & Injury Resilience: How seamlessly do Bruno Guimarães, Solís, and Consana integrate into Arteta’s central axis, and can the defensive structure maintain its low expected goals conceded (xGA) metrics while William Saliba recovers from injury?
  • Manchester City’s Transitional Fluidity Under Maresca: Can Enzo Maresca establish tactical authority over a veteran core, and how quickly does Erling Haaland regain physical sharpness after missing pre-season conditioning?
  • Liverpool’s Pressing Efficiency Under Iraula: Will Liverpool’s executive team secure Iraula’s primary transfer targets before the deadline, and can the squad achieve high passes per defensive action (PPDA) metrics without suffering defensive transition breakdowns?
  • Chelsea’s Tactical Cohesion Under Alonso: Can Xabi Alonso convert uninterrupted weekly training blocks into consistent domestic results while navigating squad bloat and off-pitch administrative interference?
  • Manchester United’s Structural Balance Under Carrick: Will Michael Carrick resolve United’s central defensive vulnerabilities following Casemiro’s expected departure, or will structural flaws undermine their talented attacking unit?

In conclusion, the discourse on The Gab and Juls Show serves as an authoritative diagnostic of modern English football. Arsenal have built a fortress of tactical clarity, financial backing, and organizational harmony. Unless rival institutions rapidly resolve their executive inefficiencies and provide their managers with the necessary tactical tools, the 2024–25 Premier League season risks becoming a masterclass in single-club consolidation.

I'm Gabby's Jules Blue Skies over West London, what a show we have Jules because it's getting closer. It's just here. Yeah. The Premier League are, well, you guys actually started in dribbs and dribs, but we'll, we'll be bringing a bit of the league of preview, a bit of the gun preview, a bit of the city of preview, Bundesliga 9. We're going to wait another week because just like you guys are keeping us waiting, but we're going to start at the top talking about the Premier League preview, pretty straight standard stuff. I find it remarkable, right? And there's an obvious reason why Arsenal are the bookies overwhelming favorites, but but not by a little, but by a lot. And it's obvious why they were in the Champions League final last year. They were in the, they won the Premier League last year. They've had the same manager. I think he's not the longest serving manager in the Premier League if I'm not mistaken. He has stability, and they spent a lot of money, most recently, as we concept everybody else either has a new manager or has a guy who was an interim guy last year or was there for a couple of weeks like the Zadby. And the teams all feel really incomplete. Yeah. The the transfer window shuts in 11 days, so I think stuff can still happen. But it's a, it's a weird place to be in. Yeah, I think so. I think the gap between Arsenal and the rest has gone bigger in the summer due to all the factors that you mentioned, Gabby, first, I think they, they're good summer in terms of recruitment. Yes, they lost Rosar and Saliba to an injury. So arguably the best there best player is not there for the start of the season, but Bruno Guy Marraige and Solis and Consana, I think are very positive signings and make that team and that squad's better, stronger with more, with more depth. And then you look at the others and there's always question marks when the new manager arrives in a, in a top club, especially we all know that and that goes for city with Marraezca for Liverpool with Iraula for Chelsea, which I'll be alone though. And even for Spurs and United as you say, Cari was there in January, but the Zadby has been there two minutes at the end of last season. And the recruitment, I think a very, very different, differently between all those teams. I think Spurs have been great. Chelsea have been great, but there's a lot of things still to do for city, still to do for Liverpool and probably for United as well. So I think I was on the FC show Monday night and we all said the gap is big night, feels like between Arsenal, the massively favorite to be tentative title and the rest behind. Yeah, and the gap is big and I want to stress, I have to think that these transfer windows are incomplete. I have to think that Liverpool are going to bring somebody in. Yeah, sure. I have to think, well, United, we know are looking to bring somebody in, just need to ship a bunch of guys out because otherwise chickens are really coming home to roost and in a big way. We had to do our predictions for the website, I made the point, like I reserved the right to change all this because everything can change. Of course. But I just want to emphasize how it makes everything so much harder, especially for these incoming coaches, right? Because these guys were locked up a long time ago, you know, all I knew in June that he was coming. And I think he would have fairly expected, okay, let's put our ducks in a row, we know it gets out until January, we want this, we want that. Neil talk about there's a lack of time to work and everything, um, they're in European competition, which is even less time, and I don't have the players to work. How are you supposed to create the chemistry? How are you supposed to create the, the, the, the automatism that's required out there? Like sometimes I find this sport really frustrating because you pay coaches a lot of money and then you don't give them the tools. And I think this is reflected this year. I don't think it's a coincidence that it doesn't automatically mean that just because if you keep a guy there for a long time, he's going to get better every year. It doesn't work that way either, but you have to have a plan. And I, I look at this and especially when it comes to Liverpool United, Chelsea, but in the basket case for a long time, this is really disappointing and then city too, because also they knew they knew Pepp was leaving. Yeah. I think so. Yeah. I think it's tough. I remember, I remember he rolled up, maybe a month ago after one of the early friendly season, I, you know, we need more players now. I need more signings, more rivals and, and it's been difficult for them to sign the players that they want. And again, I, I admire in a way that you've got plan A, plan B, plan C for a position and you are chasing plan A grades at some point. If you can't get plan A with 10 days to go, maybe it's time to go to plan B or even plan C, even if they know as good, oh, you don't have a plan B and C and you just wait another six months for plan A. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Was the manager a little bit before my time. Herbert Chapman, by the way, who won three league titles in a row. Anyway. So I said, all right, well, that I'll pick City because, you know, Erling Holland blah blah blah. And they have money. I look at it now. And I don't like my City pick at all. And I asked myself, I think there's time in the window. So they can't. Because they can bring people in. But I almost feel like City or second favorites, just because everybody else. Just looks so, so far away. We don't know what to think. We don't know what to expect. We don't know how Manchester United are going to work when Karrick has to start coaching twice a week. Yeah. Um, basically as well. And even with that pep, even with that Rodrigo, Banando Silva, and they've gone through this process of getting younger player because they're quite needed to be younger. And they arrived at the end of a cycle. I think we said that already last summer. Um, they still city. They still serve our fame. Our escap was there as an assistant before. He's a very different personality to pep. Uh, and I think it will work. So working progress. It will maybe take a little bit of time to get everybody fully sharp and much fit. As we saw in the community, she like, Harlan, Harlan is far from that, for example. We should also say it for bigger, heavier players, it always takes them more time to achieve that sharpness, even with the sport. The hunt has always been great in August. The guy always starts season's great. This is a bit different because he's had a walk up for the first time ever to deal with. And he hasn't played a single second in preseason like you and I basically, we played as much for city in prison than he did. So it's, it's difficult. But Maryska is a good coach. They will still have a great squad. They will get there. It would take a bit of time. Maybe. I've got no, I've got no wish. I really have no worries in the sense that they are for me. Still the strongest contender to us, no, and the most likely to be the one pushing them the most. I would have Chelsea quite close because I really believe in Chabielondo and what he wants to do. And some of the players have signed, I think, are very smart signings. The city, I think, have to be the second favorite. Yeah. I see in the top four as well. Based largely on Chabielondo. And also the fact that I think this always gets underestimated the importance of. Not playing midweek for not not playing. Not having those eight champions or Europa League fixtures. It just takes a lot out of you, especially when you're a new coach. You can find your rhythm. You can. That said, given the chaos that Chelsea that now we have behind the scenes of players need to go. I'm not 100% confident that Chelsea are going to make a quantum leap to forget Arsenal's level to man cities level in one season. I look further back, taught them. I just feel like they have to make up so much ground. You know, this is a team that finished one spot above relegation last year. Yeah. And it also feels like it's a team that. I don't want to say that. The window, the trans activity has been outsourced to agents to move people on and whatnot. And you could say it's definitely say the same thing about Chelsea, right? The joke is that Ali Barat is now the sixth director of football at the club. But I think it takes a lot out of it. I think I. I think giving the Zadby so much latitude. It's not a good thing. Not when you've been there. It's not a good thing. I think ever, which is a very few exceptions. Maybe it was the only way. I don't know. And we will see to be fair. I think they will have a really good season. New Europe again. I think is massive for them. Some of the signings like Van Heck and Cennice even Robertson. A midfield with Tonali and and your boy matters for others who you love. I think I think. And it's not finished by the way. They will either win. They will add the number nine. We'll be talking about that later. Yeah. Whether they've overpaid or not. Whether they didn't spend well. I think didn't spend them money. Well overall is another issue. But I think they will have a super competitive squad. Already you see the progress they've made with the ball. And I think they will be very difficult to play against. They will lead goals, I think. They will score loads of goals too. And I think it would be a great right for them. I expect them to finish top six. Because I think they really have everything for it. But there's also the desire to factor that at some point things could implode. It could go a bit crazy. It would be really fun to watch. Fun to watch. Well, Manchester United would be fun to watch. I think so. I think so. I believe in Karik. The momentum from last season where they were really probably even the second best team after behind us. And also even better than city over those last six months where Karik took over January to May. A bit less than six months. You would carry the momentum. It's the same squad. Really. Works up from it feel. Yes, but for Kazimiro. Kazimiro is always expected to leave. So then you've said you've added elements. Anandres Santos. And maybe Baléba might come. You've got Rashford who is back. And we're not showing what kind of mindset. But I think a good Rashford is an added value. Super serve to your squad. The rest. And Bomo is then should be better. Bruno is still there in his peak years. Tesco should be better. And you even have like a zirxie type. There is a different profile to what you have. That if you use well, could maybe have you a few goals of the bench, which I think is valuable. And defensively. OK, maybe defensively, but the lead is back. Your row should be better. And if they sign a decent left back to back up show or being competition with show, then I think they've got a really good squad. I, yeah, I don't see. I think this is a squad which. I had some serious flaws and maybe Michael Carrick can can make it work. I mean, he made it work already. Last season. Yes, and no, I would argue. I would argue that United were getting results. I don't think, especially as a season more on it. That last bit of the season when city tailed off. And United kind of kept winning weirdly. I think actually United probably played better in February and March than they were able to make. So obviously the results kept coming. We said it was all about results. But it wasn't. I always favorite performance. The performance, I think, gives you a much better indication of what's going to come. So what came before. But yeah, those as well. They gave an awesome was really good. I don't know. I think it was great. I think you need. Right. We really talked about. The fact that they have to play in Europe as well. Yeah. I think. Well, I think you need a quantum leap forward from Benjamin Cesco. I think it's cool. Yeah. Is your your center forward? I mean, Cunia will play. Yeah. A B M. And Bummel played us in the benign in preseason. So he'd be the backup number nine for Cisco. I. Yeah. If Bummel plays, but that's a completely different profile. And his Brian and Bummel, by the way, I want to say with. I'm saying it was the greatest respect. But he's Brian and Bummel asking him to be your center forward. Cesco has a higher ceiling. Yeah. Cesco also has a pretty lower floor because when Cesco is not working, Cesco doesn't. Doesn't work. Right. That would be my concern. And obviously, the big concern is, is in central midfield. I don't know what happened with the Edison deal. He started a new contract with Atlanta just yesterday. He spoke about it. He said he passed his medical. He doesn't know what happened. Now we'll see. Morning. We're going to talk about ballet ball either. But. Ah. To me, you are gambling. You're doing a lot of gambles. And when you're, when you're talking about. I don't think telemens is a gambled. I don't think telemens is a gambled at all. If he has the season that he had, telemens career has been marked by ups and downs. Well, not in the last three years. He's only been up with villa. He hasn't been down. Yeah. He was living before villa when he was in the prime of his career. And was it guys who were not? And he's been down. I don't know. I mentioned his prime telemens right now. He's like, I don't, I don't have any worries about telemens. But I think he's, he's going to be great for United. But. So I don't see it. I think ballet ball could be great. Smart signing. You know, I like Andreas Santos more than a lot of people. And I might be wrong. And you're big on copy. I just, I like Kobe. If you use him well, it's always the same. And last season when Karik used him well, we saw a very good Kobe. I don't know what happened at the World Cup. Why didn't get, you know, any minutes at all. But I think he's, he's a very good player. If you use him on his qualities. And his qualities are different from the other central midfielders that they have. Yeah. Which to me. Can be good in the road with the right manager. Can be bad in the sense that if you're going to play two out of those three, then I shouldn't tell him and always plays. But yeah. If there's going to be two out of those three, then you're bringing in a guy who has a different skill set. And then when you have more of a system coach, that means you have to make an adjustment. When you have more of a guy who can say, like, I'm so good at coaching that I can bring this guy in. And everybody can adjust because suddenly there's a different type of threat. There's a different profile there. Then it can be a positive. I just don't have this face in Karik that he is that guy to do that as opposed to having a system that you execute. That would be my concern was United. I thought I'm not sure about United finishing top four. I may put them back into the top four because of what's going on at Chelsea right now. But I, yeah, I think this is for most of the league, this is going to be a transition season. Yeah. For Arsenal, I think this is clearly consolidation season. I think there's a nerd, deep at Arsenal, who looked at that and just looked at trends and said, wait a minute. And then went to bed and Artheta says, if you guys want to double down by chucking even more money than we've spent before, this is the time to do it because this is where we can put our foot on the neck of the opposition. This is not going to be by the trend. I think they knew everybody knew that this was the moment for Arsenal to dominate. And I think this is where it's on them. I think the pressure is almost as high as it was last season after three second places where they were expecting, expected to win the title finally after all that time, 22 years. And now the expectations is for them to retain it. And I wanted to do it easily because it's the Premier League and nothing is easy and it won't be easy for them. But they should really do it. They are the best team. They have the best squad. They have the stability and the consistency and the momentum. They're just, there's no really, apart from Saliba, which I think is a big negative, but still, there's no, you know, everything else is like green lights. Looking at the bottom end of the table, and you follow the championship, I don't. I'm reserving judgment on who's going down until I actually see these guys play. But I did look at the bookies odds. Nobody seems to believe in poor whole city. No. Is it, is it three up three down, you think, or? I think if there's one team amongst Coventry, you've switched on and heard that stays up. It's Coventry, big investment over a hundred million pound spend already on eight players. Some really interesting young ones. A Calibri Rengi that we saw with Ghana, the World Cup. Like Sidi Kisheri, if that obviously, if you watch Liga, and you've known really well, young potentials. And be more experienced as well as as arrived. It's Frank Lampard, who you would hope has learned from what he did well before and not so well in the Premier League. And I think for me, they, and they were by far the best team in the championship. I said better than Ipswich, better than her city. So they probably have the biggest chance to step and do a sandalund in a way. But even if they finish 17th, they'll be very happy with that. Ipswich is a new manager in Gary O'Neill. Again, some interesting signings in some positions with a bit of experience, Premier League proven like it's a job, for example. And for her, it's a bit different. It's signings with knowledge, budget. Like I think them going up with never the plan. And it's probably way too early or was way too early. So I think they're, I think they're struggling. Ipswich probably too. But Coventry, I think they've got hope. So the reason it was a little higher in Ipswich, and as I understand it, Kiermeh kind of leaving is, is a blow. Is that some hardcore numbers people who, I don't understand, told me that when they came up last time, their signings and their outlook where it was almost like, these are signings for a team that wants to get, not wants to get relegated, but that expects to be relegated. And then come, but we'll come back stronger a year later. And they told me about, I mean, they raved about how smart the people of the club were. Obviously, they wouldn't, presumably they didn't plan on mechanical leaving. I don't know, yeah. So O'Neill is going to have to pick up that legacy. I look at the other one, the other teams in the Premier League, and I do wonder just because I don't think he's a good coach from the six months I saw him at Real Madrid, and I appreciate Real Madrid's very different from Fulham, as a fact that they both played white. Are Fulham, could Fulham drop into that group? I didn't like the rest. Maybe he's a West Ham. I mean, West Ham, I don't know. I mean, to do a West Ham, I meant. No, I don't know. No, I mean, I see Fulham's squad. And again, I think there's enough talent there for them to stay up. And no being that bottom three, I think Sunderland. Okay, we'll have to cope with Europe. But again, they've made some smart signings. And I think Regis Lebris is building on what was their last season with a lot of stability to among the key players. And that's very important. So I don't expect them to go down. You could look at Newcastle and thinking, they're not going to go down. They're thinking, okay, what is Yashle going to do? Are they going to trouble? Are they going to be like between 10 and 15? Which would be also interesting to follow up. But I do think there's a gap between even the weakest of those from a league more established teams than the three that went up from the second championship. All right. One team of the Dodd-Changer Manager, and has been confounding experts for the last couple of years, are asking Villa and Unai Emery. I look at this, I look at, they're 33 to one. They're the next highest outside of the traditional Big Six. By the way, when you're talking about Big Six, it's all about revenue. It's nothing other than revenue. That's all it is, right? I'm talking about how big a club is, size of your fanbase. It's all just revenue. Can you do it again? Can you sneak Villa? Given, I mean, we can point out so many flaws in Spurs and Chelsea and United and Liverpool right now and the rebuilds and the new coaches. Can you do it again? Can you ride that stability into the top four? Or close to it? Yeah, close to it, sure. But losing the players that they lost is tough. No concern. Ding, maybe not so much. Morgan Rogers is the big one. Morgan Rogers are the ones. Maybe Watkins too. Maybe Watkins too, yeah. And who you replaced them with? Who you replaced them with? Tilliman's obviously we mentioned earlier. Because you will sign a Joe Gomez, for example, who I think is the smart signing from them. He's not ready yet to be at the level of the players that you lost. Same with Manzambi, great worker. Really good at fiber. He's injured. And then when he comes back. He's not as injured too. I know. Yeah, the Joe Gomez is also to cover more on Anna to be fed on Tilliman's. But it's that. And there will be a bit of time to get those new signings, especially the younger ones who don't have the Premier League experience. Up to, up to the level that they need them to be. So there's a point where he might, he won't be able to do it. And don't forget the last season is easier to play in the European league and in the league than it is to play in the Champions League and in the league for obvious reasons. And that made the season easier domestically. I thought last season then they would be this year. But it's still a great ride. The fans would be there. They are refurbishing Villa Park. And all of that. So it's a very exciting time to be a nice and Villa fan and a nice and Villa player or director or manager. And Mateo Roger is coming too to make things even more exciting. But I think that what they've showed though, and we're spotting director changing regularly is how smart they were with the signing. So there's no reason why they won't be able to do it again. So you're like a top six finish. But we should say they like Chelsea are under a UEFA settlement. And they're under PCI restrictions and Newcastle. And it is much harder to operate. These rules exist for a reason. But they just does mean that they have a lot less latitude. And if you show up with a bag of cash like Arsenal did with consa. Then you have to accept you have to you have to probably. Exactly. All right. Predictions. I will I will caveat this. We're recording this. It's August 20th. The windows are open. I reserve the right to change my predictions. I'm going to keep my top four. I'm going to go. City Arsenal. Just city. No. I'm going to go city. Arsenal. Liverpool and Chelsea. Okay. So United. No. I don't. No, even fifth. I don't like these players as much as you do. I don't. See. Carrick's track record is positively as you do. I think. When you don't play in Europe, you can come up with some. Kind of bogus results. Yeah. Yeah. Fair enough. I've got. Arsenal winning the league. I've got city second. Still. I've got Chelsea third. Because I think I believe in Chavillonzo. Then between Liverpool and United. I'm waiting to see what Liverpool do next. Obviously. You know, I'll. I'll happy. I've united now. And like for now. In that fourth spot, Liverpool in fifth. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go. I'm going to go.
