However, adding personnel does not solve the spacing problems witnessed in recent matches. The gaps between the midfield and the defensive block are far too wide, allowing opposition transition play to flourish.

Data-backed defensive frailty

The numbers do not paint a flattering picture for a team with high aspirations. Their expected goals against (xGA) remains higher than the elite tier, largely due to a lack of pressure on the ball carrier in the middle third. When the press is triggered, it is often disjointed, with one winger engaging while the other maintains a low defensive posture.
