Manchester City are staring at a massive structural void in central midfield. With Rodri finalising his move to Barcelona after the Catalan club prepared a raised offer, Enzo Maresca faces an immediate tactical dilemma before the Premier League campaign kicks off.

City moved quickly to sign 18-year-old French starlet Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille in a deal exceeding €100m. Yet expecting a teenager to solo-anchor a title contender is a recipe for defensive instability.

Rodri was City’s structural safety net, making 3.4 ball recoveries per 90 minutes in the central third while completing 92% of his progressive passes. Without his positional discipline, Maresca’s high pressing line risks being cut open on central transitions.

That is why City made formal contact with Javier Pastore, the agent representing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Maresca managed Fernandez in West London last season and considers the Argentine’s line-breaking passing range essential for his build-up scheme.

Chelsea, however, hold the upper hand in negotiations. BlueCo directors placed a non-negotiable £120m fixed fee on Fernandez, refusing to grant financial concessions to the manager who left Stamford Bridge for the Etihad earlier this year.

As according to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea feel entirely secure retaining the player under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Maresca’s system demands a deep pivot capable of receiving under pressure with his back to goal, turning smoothly, and launching rapid diagonal passes to unbalance mid-blocks. Fernandez averaged 7.8 progressive passes per 90 minutes at Chelsea, proving his elite distribution profile.

Yet City’s decision to wait late into the summer window before replacing their main midfield anchor borders on organizational complacency. Maresca is gambling that Chelsea will blink first, but Stamford Bridge executives are standing firm.

Xabi Alonso's Wing-Back Shift and Chelsea's Defense

Across West London, Xabi Alonso is rapidly building a fluid 3-4-2-1 system designed to dominate touchline space. Marc Cucurella was sold to Real Madrid, forcing Chelsea to retool their flank personnel.

Chelsea officially confirmed the arrival of 28-year-old left wing-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday. The agreement totals €19m plus €2m in add-ons, securing the defender on a contract running until 2031.

With Marco Palestra signed for the right side, Alonso has equipped his squad with vertical wing-backs who stretch opposing defensive blocks. Chavarria averaged 4.2 open-play crosses and 2.1 successful dribbles per 90 in La Liga last season.

Alonso plans to pair Fernandez with Moises Caicedo in a double pivot that balances physical ground coverage with creative tempo control. The Spanish coach is convinced Fernandez can reach new performance heights within his tactical framework.

Chelsea want their squad finalized before their Premier League curtain-raiser against Fulham on 24 August. The hierarchy has made it clear that any deal for Fernandez must be resolved immediately or forgotten entirely.

By enforcing a strict deadline, Chelsea are calling City’s bluff. If Maresca cannot secure Fernandez, he will enter the opening weekend with an unproven midfield pairing of Bouaddi and Mateo Kovacic.

It is a stark error in squad planning from City. Losing a generational midfielder like Rodri required a seamless replacement plan, not a public transfer feud with an aggrieved rival.

The Winger Dominoes and Lille's €100m Shield

The operational tension between City and London clubs expands into the attacking line. Brazilian winger Savinho is pushing for a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur after becoming frustrated by his limited role under Maresca.

Talks between Spurs and City have continued for weeks without a final agreement. Savinho’s desire to leave has forced City to scout replacement wingers who can break down compact low blocks.

City are assessing Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo, a 21-year-old Belgian international capable of playing across the front line. However, Atletico Madrid have stepped up with a formal €35m bid to bring him to La Liga.

With Lille pricing Fernandez-Pardo near €40m, City face a decision on whether to divert transfer funds away from their midfield hunt. Spending heavily on secondary wingers while leaving the central pivot thin would be a baffling tactical choice.

Goalkeeping Insurance and Tactical Outlook

While City search for solutions outfield, they executed a low-cost move in goal by bringing Geronimo Rulli back to the Etihad from Marseille. The 34-year-old signed a two-year contract running until 2028.

As BBC Sport reported, City secured Rulli for a fee of £1.7m. Rulli previously spent the 2016-17 season at City without making a senior appearance.

Rulli arrives as backup to first-choice goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma after James Trafford departed for Leeds United in a deal worth up to £45m. Rulli brings extensive European experience, having won the 2021 Europa League with Villarreal against Manchester United.

City Football Director Hugo Viana praised the Argentine's arrival, noting his veteran poise will stabilize the goalkeeping group alongside Donnarumma and third-choice Marcus.

Rulli was part of Argentina’s trophy-winning squads at the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America, as well as their run to the 2026 World Cup final. Yet signing a veteran backup goalkeeper does not resolve City’s tactical vulnerabilities in central midfield.

Failing to secure Fernandez leaves City reliant on an 18-year-old newcomer to handle Premier League pressing intensity. Opponents will target the space behind City’s full-backs, knowing Rodri is no longer there to sweep up second balls.

My prediction: Chelsea will refuse to drop their £120m asking price, and City will walk away without signing Fernandez. Maresca will be forced to adapt his midfield build-up on the fly, costing City valuable points during the opening month of the season.
