This is the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Thanks for joining us. The first Saturday night football of the new campaign saw Brentford Play Toplam at the G-Tech community stadium. This is how we saw things at full time. We have witnessed Brentford brilliance on day one of the new Premier League season. Keith Andrews side put in a fantastic performance to earn their first ever home Premier League win against Tottenham HotSpot. Spurs, though, under Roberto DeZerby Brittle. More to come from them, despite their lavish spending, they were second best all over the shop. No surprise when Brentford took the lead on 12 minutes through Keel Lewis Potter, or indeed doubled it on 33 Vitali Janelt, opening his account as well. Early in the second half, when we expected a spurs response, we didn't get one. We got a third, Michael Coyote, and it could have been worth Igor Tiago missing a penalty. Shining new players, but a similar story for Spurs. Another Premier League defeat. Brentford had some winners on day one. Final score, Brentford 3, Tottenham HotSpot 0. Very comfortable win for Brentford in their first game of this new Premier League season. We'll talk about the Spurs contribution to that performance and then them allowing Brentford to play in that way. But before we do is, as Brentford players about celebrating with their fans, as Keith Andrews is about celebrating, in front of those Brentford fans, a word on their performance, Jimmy. I thought they were magnificent today. They won the last preseason game, 7-0. I mean, that sums it up. We're going to talk about it, but we can't ignore that one. We can't ignore that one. I think the big iron track Frankfurt 7-0 last week, and I was like, that's an interesting one. Sometimes that's not always great in preseason to be that kind of performance, that kind of high. But what they did was they carried that on into today. I thought they were great. They won every single duel, set up half-time. It was almost like total football time. You know, that young man there, Keen Lewis Potter, was playing left-back. Then he's at the right on the right wing. San Gare looks like a revelation. What a bit of a recruitment that is. They are pace around the team, and they were just too powerful for this top side. They couldn't handle their intensity. Don't get me wrong, there's a really good time to play top men. This team that we've seen today will not resemble the team in six weeks, but still you've got to make sure you maximize that, get the right result, and I thought, keep Andrews. Everything you did today for his team, they were absolutely top-class, is he? And he's almost kind of re-styled, Brentford, for this season. Certainly, if today's game is anything to go by, is he? Well, I think like Jamie said, they're alluded to it half-time when goals are scored in the first half. By that man there, it was absolutely outstanding. The build-up play, the patience around the box, and then the intricate combination play. It was absolutely beautiful to watch. And I thought they absolutely destroyed top men in that first half. It felt like the Spurs midfield was in a bit of a washing machine. They were just moving around the rotations. They were clever, pragmatic, with the way that they approached the game. Like Jamie said, they're strong on set. Peace is good in joules. Every phase of the game, Brentford proved why they finished, where they did last season, and why they've got a very powerful collective of that squad. We just saw the Tottenham owners there, and we know that they've committed funds to their manager, Roberta Deserbie. We'll talk about how effectively that's been spent, and how it might look, as you say, within a few weeks' time. But just to look at the job that Keith Andrews has done, the job that Brentford have done, they too have broken their transfer record this summer. Mamadie Sangari came on, he was involved very much, very heavily in all, really, of the good things that Brentford were doing. Yeah, and that man there. I thought Yannout was brilliant, obviously, Nick Tagal, Jensen as well. I thought the balancing midfield was really good. They were aggressive, but there was also culture when they had it. I've been playing midfields, so I've always got a soft spot when I watch midfield players. When I see players coming into this league, you look at how their debuts are, but that was as good a debut as I've seen a long time from Sangari. It really was. He just looked so accomplished, so comfortable. A lot of freedom in that pitch, but still, he made it count. I always think we're left footers, the way that especially someone so cultured, it always looks a bit nicer on the eye, and they'll love him the Brentford fans. They won't be, they'll look at it and go, he's going to be here for a while, they'll have a succession plan for every single player on that pitch, even the manager, because Keith is showing right now. He's also an elite manager. And they will find, as you say, that they will have those people in place to make sure that they keep players at the club, but they've managed to do that over this summer just gone. And they've managed to add to it. And Sangari has been pushed in front of those Brentford fans. Actually, how difficult is it from that position to go on and have such an impressive debut? And certainly one that is as noticeable as his was. Jamie said it in the pretty much chat around, whoever's advised in this guy to think of all the options he probably had with his stats coming out of league on last season at Long. And I think that type of player is so valuable. We speak a lot about 6-8 in terms of midfield, about the fact that he's actually a bit of everything. And he showed that he can play anywhere. Clever football has fine space, and they play in it. And what impressed me the most about him this afternoon was how quickly he plays the ball. He didn't wait on the ball. He had his passing mind for played it. And he created rhythm for Keith Andrews side. And you can just tell the flow. And for him to come into the side, have a bit of preseason under his belt and produce a performance like that. In that midfield against Alexa Tanali, Birdwell. Fernanda's second half, Fentanker. I think it speaks volumes of him as a footballer. This summer and last summer couldn't be more different for Frankfurt. They lost big players. Obviously they had the change of managing with Thomas Franklin in place by his assistant Keith Andrews. And then Andy and the set. He's coached. That was his previous job at Frankfurt. This season, yes, they've brought in San Gary. But it's been relatively stable at the club Jamie as well. Yeah, it has. But a lot of that is so before the game, you want to keep your best players. You want to keep the lights out. You know, Coyote. You want to keep the lights a sharder. You want to make sure you keep to your argo. And they've done that. And that's why now they look so strong. They look so in a collective today. They were all working hard for each other. It's not a class performance, Kelly. And Mamadu, San Gary and Nathan Collins are waiting to talk to Johnny Phillips. Nathan, just tell me, how good a performance was that? Yeah, it's the start we wanted. We want to start it, Brian. We want to start a shot. We want to fucking shot. Sorry. We want to show what people are made of. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, apologies for anyone offended by that language. But what's it one of those where you just got into it right at the start and got it first from the off? Yeah, it's what we wanted to start. We know last season of her, we're 1.5. This year we had equality. Good people to the squad. And we wanted to show what we're about again. Mamadu, San Gary alongside you. Just tell me, how good a player is he? Yeah, he's all right. He's started okay. We want more from him though. More goals, more tackles. Mamadu, how much did you enjoy that? Yeah, it's really good. Since my birthday here, everyone, everybody was really good with me. So it's really good to start with a win, with our offense. So I hope we can continue like that. And yeah, so everything I can see. Nathan, is what we saw today, the product of a really good preseason, a settle side, where everyone knows their work? I think so. And I think it's just a star for us. I think it's sort of the grow from. I think we can only get better from this. Yeah, let's hope it's a good season. And it's a great performance. But no surprises. Mamadu is the player of the match. Will you do the honors? Yeah, I would. Yeah. I think he's so far out on the team. Yeah. But thank you. Well done. Thank you. Just guys, thank you. Really impressive, Debbie from Mamadu, San Gary. Really impressive performance and result from Brentford, Nathan Collins, somewhat overexcited in the interview. So if you heard anything that you didn't like, we can only apologise. I think you will understand that emotions are running high in terms of the aftermath of that game. But I can reach as many years ago. Yeah. And we don't need to bring them all up. Oh, sorry. But we do know that players will get emotional at this time of the day. And we do know that they will be overexcited by that result. What we also know is that fans will have their own opinions. Sky Sports has partnered with Finalesis. So they're trying to find out the thoughts of Brentford and Tottenham fans. If you want to download the Finalesis app, you can do that now. Just scan the QR code that's on your screen. You'll get more details. You'll be able to download the app and you'll be able to let us know what you thought of your team's players. So let's take a look at what happened earlier on today. There was a big win for Holybeet Man United 2-0, also Ipswich. With a last minute winner from Jack Clark, the former Sunderland player to beat Sunderland by two goals to one. Everton beat Crystal Palace, two Nile Jews before, and Tiana Barry on the score sheet for them. And it was an 88 minute winner from Anton Stack, the lead against Nottingham Forest in what was... Let's call it a very tight encounter. And the Premier League Champions Arsenal got their campaign well underway with a 3-0 victory over a new boys' Coventry on the Friday night football. There is still plenty more football to come your way. Brighton against Aston Villa, Manchester City against former and what's sure to be an emotional occasion that's in James' park where they remember Kevin Keegan from Newcastle United against Liverpool. Monday night football, full him against Chelsea. And remember, you can watch all of today's Premier League goals on the Sky Sports app at the first place. You'll be able to see today's goals. And there's lots more live sport coming up for you as well. Tomorrow it's the Dutch Grand Prix, the race itself from 1230 on Sky Sports F1. As we've just seen that game between Newcastle United and Liverpool four o'clock for the build-up to that on Sky Sports Premier League, ahead of that 430 kickoff. And tomorrow's the finals are since Anati Open. You can watch that from seven o'clock on Sky Sports tennis. And this looks interesting. The set against London's boxing scene 50 Cent is the executive producer at Fightland and it starts on Thursday on Sky Atlantic. She's about to go. What? What's it about? It's about boxing, don't you think? It's about boxing. Fiddy is an executive producer. Fiddy, 50 Cent. Brentford, three no winners overtot them on their Premier League opener for this season. Keen Lewis Potter, with the first of the goals for the home side, Vitaly Janelt, made it to there was also time for Brentford to miss a penalty in this game as well. Michael Pioting made it three no to Brentford in a comprehensive win. They were assisted in that by the performance of Tottenham, who are a team at the moment in Flutton. There've been a lot of new players coming into the side and they still have seven players out injured. As Jamie was saying earlier on, it looks as though that's a team who might not have started the Tottenham within the next few weeks, but it just showed you how dominant the performance. There's 26 shots that led to an XG of 3.96. It's the most shots and highest XG of any team so far in this opening Premier League weekend, but it's also more shots and a higher XG than any game that Brentford played in last season and the most shots that Spurs have faced since October 2022. And they did it with 40% possession. Jamie, we touched on this earlier about how much Spurs assisted Brentford in terms of allowing them to play the game that they clearly wanted to play. What was lacking? Was it just an unfamiliarity between the players? Particularly new players in that back fall? A little bit of that. I think you would say they were probably like a team of strangers if you liked it, didn't have that extra know-how of when maybe Van Hecker and Sinesi as a partnership, they never really won enough jewels. I didn't like the look of the team, I must admit. When I saw the 11, I'm not a big fan of Gallagher in the 10. I thought, where's that creativity going to be? Canali, Bergval, for whatever reason, there's had a tough six or seven months. The managers that have come in haven't really seemed to trust him. Bring him in today, lost the ball in the first few minutes. Then he lost a duel for the goal and just seemed to be not an ease of himself. But that was Tottenham as a man, really. They never really looked at a team that was ever going to cause this Brentford side problems. They were just too good, too much know-how. They knew everyone knew their jobs. Every single set piece was spot on. I think it was a little bit of both. I think you mentioned that a half time, Izzy. But this Tottenham side will not be the side that we see in six weeks. That's probably the hope for Tottenham right now because they need a bit of positivity. But I think that there was so many disappointing factors. Even though it's not going to be the team in six weeks, they've still got to be better than what they were today. That was not good enough. They didn't win enough draws. They were good enough at set pieces. All the fundamentals you need to win a football match. They didn't do. But as you said, everything that Brentford needed to do, they did and they did it well. And King Louis Potter, who scored the opening goal, joins us now from the GTEC. King, thank you so much for your time today. Start at the season with a win you've got Brentford's first goal of the season. Could it have gone any better, do you think? No, I don't think so. I think maybe probably could have scored a few more in the first half. But yeah, like I said, it was off to a great start and a great first game. King, Izzy here. I know Jamie's very keen to talk about your goal, so he'll come to that in a minute. But just wanted to ask you a little bit of insight. What's it like working with the Gaffer Keith Andrews and Damien Duff as well? Yeah, they've been absolutely amazing. Like I said, when the Gaffer came in last year, it was, you know, I think it's fair to say, it was a bit of a rough time at the start. We had so many outgoings and was getting the squad together again. And you know, it was hard for him. But you know, it's a mind you want to play for. And yeah, obviously, it works so hard for him. And again, with Duffer coming in, he's been excellent with everyone and getting everyone gel together. King, Jamie, let's get to that goal mate. I loved it. You're a left-back, left-winger at home. And you've found yourself on the right wing today. You know, it was almost like total football. Just took us through it. Yeah, I think, you know, like you said, I started off playing left-wing and obviously recently moved to left-back. You know, I try and get into different positions, no matter where I play. And again, I think, you know, the more flu we can be, the harder it is for them. And yeah, a great pullback from Mama to there. And it's an easy enough finish for myself. King, there was a sort of perception of Brentford as a more direct team, a team that were very efficient from set places. There've been a real decision made to change that slightly this season. Yeah, I think every, you know, we try and build on something new. And like I said, I think probably when I first joined Brentford, was known as this direct team. Put balls in beyond set players. But like you said, I think each year you need to improve and get better to stand the Premier League. And yeah, I think we've proved that by being able to play it from the back. And keep the ball about the same time. Go behind on my knee too. Last season, though, there was so much change in the build-up to the start of the season. We're players going out with the manager changing. This season, it's been much more consistent, but there has been a record new signing in Mamadu, Sangari. And obviously, you linked up with him for that opening goal. How has he been in training? How have you enjoyed playing with him? Yeah, he's been unbelievable. I can't praise him high enough. He's one of them players where we might lose the ball. And is that good? You just know that he's going to win it back. He can get us on the counter attacks so quickly. Yeah, like I said, you know, when we've got him on the pitch, if we lose the ball and myself, I just know that he's going to win it back. Is that good? That balancing midfield was really good as well. I know you've got lots of yarmlet come on, but it feels like you get with Jensen and Janelle. Those three were so in control. And that was an area where you dominated to there, especially when you came into that midfield area, just to extra flood it. Making it so hard for Tottenham to deal with the pace and the energy you had. Yeah, like you said, I think we've got so much depth, so much quality in the positions. And I think each week everyone's going to be battling to start the game and again, like you said, with the lads coming on as well, it gives us so much more than the lads just starting also. Kim, what does success look like for Brentford this season? Obviously, building on last year, it was tough to take a class game this season. Obviously, we left it there, having to go to Anfield to win the game, to get something, to get Europe. I think this season, again, we can do something special. We've got the players, we've got the squad. Yeah, we're full of belief and confidence and hopefully something can happen. Kim, were you rubbing your eyes at somebody at the final whistle? Yeah. Add someone in the stands, spares fans. Yeah, that was for him. Yeah, well, I think you maybe gave them something to cry about today. Congratulations on the win. Congratulations on the goal. Thanks so much for joining us, Keen. Thank you very much. Congratulations. Thank you. It's a really impressive performance all round from Brentford, as we said. And his performance was key. And particularly with that group of players who've had the consistency throughout last season and bringing it into this one. I think so as well. And I think what he's done as a player, because he was, when they signed him from Hollywood, he was predominantly a left-winger. That's probably what they signed him as. Obviously, Rico Henry had an injury or has had injuries. It was a player I really like as well. But he's found himself playing left-back. I as played there as well at times. But they just seemed to create players and everybody fills in. Even today, if he came out to that right-hand side, you've found Jensen coming in. And that's why I was talking about Total Football. Everybody knowing when somebody was out of position, they just found a way to just fill the right areas. They're incredibly brave at the back. Who sent a back place so high, they press you, they stop you getting out. And it was a total performance. And it was a great question, you ask Kelly, because we are. Sometimes with coaches and teams, you think, OK, well, they get labelled. We're labelled people. You're a set-piece team. You're even the manager before the game. Roberto Deservi said, oh, we're going to deal with a lot of long balls today. But what they actually dealt with was Total Football. And the excellent passing, they were touring to quit. If you didn't know who was, if you'd have watched the two sides before, you thought, OK, who's the football team out of these? You would have gone more Brentford, much better football side. Tottenham really didn't have an idea and understand how they were playing. And that first goal, epitomised it. We start off with a close-up of what Sangari can do so well. I absolutely love this. I'm a big fan of 1-2s. Now, I think I'll just take that back, because this is one of the most underrated things in the world. Because when you're a midfield player, even a forward, if I'm going to run at someone, and I want to go play a 1-2, you just want to see if you just keep your eye on Bergval here. His shoulder is going to turn to the right, and he's going to get drawn to Watarra. Then that thing just lets you dip in behind him. And what he would have seen here without a doubt is that little bit of space there. It's opened up. You can see, there's Tell, he's out here looking at this man here. I've got that space. So if I can play, and he's almost signposting it outside of his left foot, but just watch what Bergval does. As soon as he plays it, he turns to his right, he completely loses him, and then he's in behind him. Look, whoop, bang. And then you're in. And then Keen Lewis Potter. I'm just going to highlight that as well, because he probably undersold what he did. Watch his movement here. He's like a center forward. It's brilliant. He goes in, realises the space. He's got Tiago and Van Hecker. He then just puts the brakes on. Look, just some post where he wants it, and a great finish. But then when I talk about the total football, that side of it, this is obviously the key. You can see there, Sangari comes into the deep area. This is him there. He's already looking up. He's got a picture. He knows when that ball comes to him, I'm going to play this ball into this man. He's already spotted him. He knows that passes on, because he has two steps of head of anyone else on the pitch. That's how good he was today. Here's your left back. He's now playing as a right winger. But you can see Sangari, he's knows. This ball is going to come into him. He's checked his shoulder. He knows. I'm going to get that ball. The good position opens up his body, bang. Great pass. Now he's on to the next one. You can see Jensen plays it into him. Now, how quickly can I fizz that out to this man? Again, now you can see Tottenham is starting to get problems. They know they've got to get back to this quickly as they can. Then the ballcook gets recycled again. Now Sangari has his hands up. He wants the ball here. He's already had a little look. He knows there's a lovely bit of space here. Richard Larson, come out in. No, I don't want to run to that one. I'll leave that one. Bergval too far away. This is not enough energy with these midfield four here. The ball then gets played into him. You've got a nice bit of a wick from Coyote, and he senses this one to his arm. Brilliant piece of play, burst past him. Lovely cut back, brilliant finish. But from their point of view, Tottenham, I think you've spotted a few things that you didn't like at all. Yeah, if we let it run through again, I think you've highlighted it excellently, Jamie, in terms of the goal and the timing of movement from Atari, linking with Sangari in this moment, you can see him here, just pulls off the top. Nobody picks him up. Creates a space in behind, like you say, perfect timing. But the better I want to highlight is here. So you spoke about the buildup. We spoke about the buildup for Tottenham in the pre-match, but we're looking at the buildup for Brentford in this moment. And I just want to highlight the four players that live on the top line here for Brentford. Okay? We'll just ignore that bit. That's just a ghost. In terms of the way they want to play the four on the top line here, a pinning back the Tottenham back for from adding to the press. So as we play it through, Rich Allison, starts depressed by himself. And I want you to keep your eyes on Jensen here. He's pointing, and I know you're a big fan of a point, Jamie, because, like you said, this man, the guy that you highlighted, when he ends up getting on the ball, he knows that this is going to be the guy, and this is Van Hecker's man here. And because of the way that the play evolves, he's worried Van Hecker, who just pours it as soon as Sangari gets the ball. He has a little scan, and now he's pointing. Because he knows he is free right there. And here's your deepest midfielder, Tanali. He cannot connect to Jensen to defend. The past detail from Sangari is outstanding as we saw all game, because he absolutely rips it through the lines and says, go forward. It pulls Van Hecker out, and then look who ends up getting the return pass. And this is what I'm talking about, with speed of play. Look at Sangari again here. How quickly he shifts this ball out here as soon as he receives it. Look at that, one touch. And it completely drops Taknamath. Completely drops him off to a point where tell is the left back, but they didn't like it, so they didn't play forward. They build, and look where they've got Taknam now. The whole 11 here, or the whole 10 outfield here, and then they wait for the moment. And then like you say, Sangari just does the business here. Pullsburg, Bergval out, gets into the space of Tara, and then look here. The ability to pick somebody out in that moment is absolutely class. And then the finish is clean as anything. I love it. I think there was an absolute spot on with Taknam. What he also says, that was unbelievable football from Breadford. Fantastic. But defensively from Taknamath, you've nailed it. That was a fantastic team goal. The one we goal in the season, but in terms of every player, hat player in their role, filling in, seeing where the picture is, I thought that was a magnificent team goal. And it shows you, you've got, you asked a question to Keen, that might be how they start to evolve now with this team at Breadford. Well, hopefully we get a chance to talk to Keith Andrews as well later on, and it feels, the way that you've described it, both of you, that it's a real coach's goal. So we'll get his thoughts on that a bit later on. Two down this time, it was Vitali Janelt on the score line. Yeah, and you flip this one because this is Taknam playing out from the back. And we'll get to it in a minute from the next angle, but we spoke about the lack of desire, and that 50-50 jewel from Bergval there, he loses it, and then it's the second phase finish, kind of a scruffy goal, but this is the bit which we want to highlight here. So we highlighted it half-time, we just rolled it back just a tiny little bit, because this is what Taknam want to do in terms of what they do to teams. They want to build with two deep midfielders, center back, and then Van Heck will be out here somewhere, in sort of like a box. But because Brentford are just being really aggressive and brave, Kingsky has to go along. And this is so important for a deserving team. We saw it right in, we saw it in Marseille, that the highest man here, Rich Allison, that can get the ball, he has to pin the ball. He has to hold it, doesn't he, Jamie? Has to hold it. So as soon as this pass goes in here from Kingsky, in this moment here, what I would expect to see from a deserving team is one of these midfielders, to come and connect underneath them. And being really critical, could Bergval come in this space here, so he can see him, at least see him, because where's the space? Absolutely. Where is the space? It's... Who's holding it there as well? You know, the other thing as well. How brave are the two Brentford centerbacks? You know, they're both Collins and Ia. They're so hyped that pitch, you've got Coyote in a ready position there, in case that ball gets in behind, just to help his centerback. It's such a brave side to play. What you're spot on doing, because the importance of Richaelis and holding onto the ball in this moment, it's equally important for Ia here to win the ball, because exactly like you say, look where he is. So as the ball progresses here, he gets a little nick on it, but then this bit here from Bergval and I don't want to be too hard on him, he's a young player with obviously a very bright future ahead. But in this moment now, it goes without saying, you have to win that duel. You have to win the duel, because then look what happens. Jensen again, confidence is high. Like I said at half time, he telegratched the shot, gets a lot of dip on it. Kingsky has to make a save. The ball's moving, it's dipping. And then there it falls to, and out for the finish. So it's a good goal for Brentford, but again, poor from Tottenham, in terms of their build-up structure. In terms of Brentford's third goal, Jamie, were there signs that this was maybe somewhere they were going to get some joy? Yeah, well, I looked at the first corner at a start of the game and you've heard me say this a lot, Kelly. I'm not a big fan of leaving players on the edge of the box free. Especially when San Gare, if you go through his time in France, he's got a really good shot. He scores goals from distance. I can't get my head around it. And if you look, there's Mikey Moore, who's a winger. He's not a defensive player, and I know he's only going to try and block. I hear it all the time. There's your players there, you know, that are going to attack the ball, Sinese and Van Hecker. I really don't like this setup. But what they do, they actually do a really clever corner here, where I think it is, Keen Lewis Potter is going to come into this area here where San Gare is. He's going to come out. But I don't know for sure, because I'm not an adresserant. But I think what Brent would do after this is they'll identify something that could definitely work for them in the second half. And that is by keeping Nathan Collins here at this back post, he then can head the ball back to somebody if you keep him on the edge of the box, because they don't mark the edge of the box. Anyway, let's just let this one play on because this is a really clever corner. But I think at half time, we're talking about brilliant set piece coaches now and the level of detail that these guys look at everything. I've got no doubt at all that they would have done something where the set piece coaches would have said, right, we've got an opportunity here. Tottenham, do not mark that area, again, different story. But we've got a back post situation with Archie Gray and Nathan Collins. That's a mismatch, complete mismatch. Janel's got a really lovely left foot. There's no doubt he can play this ball into exactly where he wants to. You get Tiago taking Mikey Moore in, Sharda, he doesn't want to do he doing that Mikey Moore. Because there's no doubt, he heads that ball back knowing that this man here is as free as a bird on the edge of the box. And as the corner comes in, it plays out like this. Because you can keep your eye on Mikey Moore. You keep your eye on them, they follow him in. Heads it back now. There you go. Great strike. And obviously Coyote reacts first. And it just shows you, this is the level of detail that you have to do now. There's no doubt at all there ever. Looked at that a half time. And that's where you reap rewards. And this is the level of the game. And this is what set-piece coaches do, whether you like them or not. But they're so bright in every single aspect of it. You know, Keith Andrews used to be do the set-pieces. I'm sure he's involved in it now. But they are brilliant at these kinds of things, Brentford. And they don't just score really good team goals. They can also score these types of effective goals as well, as he can't make. I think the strike from Sangara in the edge of the box as well. It's all well and good finding the edge of the box and creating that moment. But having the composure to keep it down, and the technique to hit it on target, fizz it into the mix with pace and it'll be a big problem for the goalkeeper. And then it proved to be a goal. And they also cause problems for Spurs in the sense that Spurs conceded a penalty in this game. The foul was Bentonker on Sharda. There was a lot going on, actually, and they're in the buildup to this. There was possible claim for Handball, but the penalty was given for this incident that's just coming up where they clattered into each other. I'm not sure, either, if you think it was a particularly nailed-on penalty, but certainly not a particularly soft one either. Clever from Sharda, because he gets the first contact on it and causes Bentonker to make the decision work. Referee deemed enough to make a foul, and you made a great point on this journey about Tiago. Yeah, I suppose that's the only, but it was not a lot in the copy books. They were so good, but for his confidence, it was nice for him to get that goal, with that penalty, just to get him off to a good start. It was well coupled as well. But yeah, is that the... But if it had been 4-0, even 5, Mike Humor had a couple of chances, that wouldn't have been... I don't think it would have done them... It would have been a disservice, really, because they was that much better than taught them today. And we've cut... You know, obviously, with Sangara in midfield, revelation. If you're watching on Sky Sports main event, you're going to be heading over to the golf now. The FedEx is underway. It'll be on W Championship. Roy McAroy is in action. You're listening to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Let's get back to the studio for more reaction to today's game. Much was made of the money spent in the transfer window of the new players that have come into this new look spurs for the first full season. Oh, the first start to the season, the Roberto Deserbie has been in charge for, but it's ended in a 3-0 defeat by Brentred. Let's hear from the Spurs boss with Johnny Collett. Roberto, from your perspective, what went wrong today with that performance? We suffered physicality, but we knew before the game. But we were not ready to fight in the duel. I think we made a lot of mistakes in the timing of the pressure with Mikey Moore on the left center. We arrived too many times late, but at the end we lost too many duels to compete with Brentred. I'm sorry for that. I'm sorry for the defeat. I know we have to improve in the physical condition. We have to improve in the organization, not because anyway, there were many new players. But the first game is a part of our journey. We know, and we knew before the game, even too many, a lot of new players to become a team. We need two things I said yesterday in press conference. And instead of playing today, I think the soul, there was the soul, but at the end we didn't fight in the right way, maybe for the difference of the duels, because Brentred is maybe one of the most important teams in the Premier League in terms of duels. But my first game. You prepared the team. Why did you feel they didn't fight in the duels? Was that their mentality out on the pitch? No, no, because I believe in my players. I don't know. I was a game, especially in the first half, in one direction. We were not in the right position to make the right pressure. I said that with Mike Immur, but then if you analyze the game, and you can see how many duels we lost in the first half, in the first half, the way of the game went in the direction of Brentred. In the build-up to this game, you said that it was important to remember where this team has come from. They've been finishing at the wrong end of the table. I know there were some new players today, but did that still look like a team that could finish in the wrong end of the table? We didn't play well. We didn't fight in the right way. I think no, because we didn't remember the last season because all these players are good people and are people with value and memory. But we lost too many duels. One of the best qualities of Brentred is the one to one, the man to man to win the duels and the set pieces. Do you expect this team to change a lot in the coming weeks? Do you feel the team you put out today won't be the team that plays most of the season? No, I think the first eleven was able to compete. Normally, if the game went in this way, now we can say a lot of things, but I don't lose confidence in my players. I don't lose confidence in these people. We have to work. We have to work. We have to improve. We have to analyze better the game and to find the improvement. Apart from the duels that you talk about and that you've identified, what other areas do you feel really need working on before the next game? No, I think we have to analyze well this game. We can't destroy everything because we are working well. We have improved physical conditions for sure. The physical condition of the players is not for all players the same point because a lot of players they started the season late, like Senezi, Bergval and a lot of players. But I don't want the excuse. I want to stay focused on the improvement that we have to do. And as an improvement, the first one is to find the right spirit to fight. And today, no, maybe the spirit, but at the end, we were not right to fight. Did it surprise you? Did you expect better? Yes, better for sure. I didn't expect this result, but I knew the problems we could find today, especially in the duels, like I said. Thanks for your time. You returned to that idea of them losing duels a couple of times during that interview. You also talked about the fact they need to improve on their conditioning and on their organization. When you looked at the analysis and were critical of the way that they defended in terms of the Brentford goals, how much of that is he? Can we put down to the fact that this is not a group of players by and large who have played in a competitive game together? Yeah, I think to a certain extent, I understand the physical condition part, I think, at this stage, not everybody is fully fit. Does the World Cup play into that as well? Possibly quite possibly, and I think the thing is, Jamie made the point pre-match. Desirby had the seven games at the back end of the last season, kept them up, but now he's had full pre-season to work with the players and obviously opened up the Premier League season for them tonight with that heavy defeat. And I think the physical condition is one thing, I think the jewels and the fight and the spirit should always exist. I would be more concerned about the patterns of play in terms of but it's hard to put your finger on whether it was just Brentford who were excellent today, or whether it was Tottenham who were poor because the basics like this here, losing the ball inside your own third, defensive third, putting the opponent on an attack, that should have been a goal, it should have been a goal, it should have been a backer than it. We analyse this one here, Kingsky playing out to Hartley Gray, Sharda gets across, it's a pressing trap, Brentford win the ball back again. And this is the goal that we saw, which Alison not securing the ball underneath, given I hear the option to do that and win it, the jewel is then lost, and then this is how Brentford punish you, isn't it, Jimmy? Absolutely. I think spot on in terms of just being really sloppy, this one comes into Bergval, loses the ball too easy, cheaply, and then you're turning it over against a really good side. You can see there, get hold of the ball, you must know that someone's coming in behind you, they just have your wing mirrors on, doesn't work. This is another one, gets played into Benton Core, gives it away too cheaply. Now I will say, I'm a big fan of Roberto Deservi, but considering the players he had at his disposal, I still think he picked a poor team today. That team that he had, and the players that he left out, I don't know what for now, this is condition is like, I think obviously James Madison in midfield would have been a better option. It didn't feel like a team that was equipped to go up against Brentford, and sometimes you have to pick a team that's going to be out of hand or set pieces. I looked at Senesci and Van Hecker, and Richarlison, maybe from set pieces, there were the only three that I thought could compete. They're not one of big enough sides, they weren't clever enough, they weren't cute enough on the ball. I think they were lacking in every department, and he has to take responsibility for that, because that team just wasn't the right team, to be equipped to play against a really good solid Brentford side. But equally as you pointed out, seven players missing through injury, including a lot of the leaders within the squad, including a lot of the members of that leadership group, which meant that 20-year-old Archie Gray became the youngest player to captain Spurs. Here he is with Johnny Phillips. Archie, where did you identify the problems in that performance? Where do you think it went away from you? It was simple really. We lost two mini-jewels. They just fought us all over the park, and we need to watch it back, and that's the main thing that we need to do better, really. It's difficult, straight away, in the aftermath of a performance like that, and why do you think you lost those jewls? Like I said, they just outfought us, you know, for some reasons, on days and football, the team and our fight and other team, and you know, we weren't, for whatever reason we weren't, you know, got for the fighters they were, and that's on us, and, you know, for the fans there, and Ketabon, for us to let them down, like that on the first games. Yeah, there's not really words for it, so, you know, we need to bounce back from that. So, yeah. Not all the starting line-up are at the same place physically, some have had less work than others. That was perhaps something to do with it, or do you think it was a mentality thing? I don't think there's any excuses to be honest, I think, you know, we'll all look ourselves in the mirror, and it wasn't good enough. Like I said, we all lost too many jewls, and I think that was the main part of the game that we lost, so. And again, it's that part about losing jewls. Is he said that that's something that, that should always be there, Jamie? What would be the reasons that that would be missing from the game? It's not competing. It's the basics. Fundamentals are football. You want to win a football match, especially. I think the game is starting to... It's starting... It feels like the game is starting to go back to what it was 15-20 years ago to a certain extent, where there's going to be more jewls. I think referees are letting go, more tackles go. Now, set pieces might go a slightly different way, because obviously, with the holding and things like all those, a couple of contentious ones today. But I think, unless you're going to win your midfield battles, unless you're going to win your second balls, you cannot win a football match anymore. It's not just about playing out from the back, and having lovely pretty patterns, looking like what, right, and where a few years ago, you have to win jewls. You have to win challenges. And if you don't, you don't win, especially against a side like Brentford. Now, I mentioned it... It's a big squad. And just to point out, we've put question marks over Svino and Mamou, because obviously, they're reported to be in talks with those two players who may well be heading into spurs in the not-too-distant future. But they've got question marks. The rest of them, OK, might not be fit at the moment, but that's a big squad. Yeah, I think if you look to the two midfield players, you're going to have to gnarly on Fernandez. That's their certainties. You know, in the 10, Kula Cheski, if they can get him fit, I'm a big fan of his in this area. But James Madison, Simmons is obviously out for a long time. Gallagher doesn't work in a 10 for me. I think he's more of one in the defensive midfield players or he won't be in the team. Svino, if they can get him, really good option. I thought, tell, was probably the only player today that I thought did OK. Yeah, you can walk away from this game thinking, I did a right to that against a really difficult player in the right back Coyote. Up from, this is an area. Richarlison is not good enough for Tottenham. They need to move him on. Marmouche, as if they can get in, that'll be a great sign in. That's a massive upgrade from him. So, Lanke, if you can keep him fit, obviously, you know, very good player. Svino, I think we'll probably play on this side, but you've got Kudas here as well. I need to get him fit. Right back, Poro Gray, that's fine. A doggy, Robinson, Robinson, whoever you want to pick. Maybe Van De Ven might go play left back at times, but I would probably like to see if I'm picking the best side you have to do to win three points, probably go with Van Hecker and Van De Ven because of the pace Van De Ven gives you. But it's going to look totally different to what we saw today, Kelly. But they definitely need someone in this area. They want to, it's all right, spend all the money in the world. You need an elite center forward. And right now, I don't necessarily believe they've got one. So, Lanke has elite moments, but does he do it regularly? Not quite. But Savino will be in upgrade. And then obviously getting Cooler Chesky fit. Just how, I don't know how his knee is, but he's such a good player for this side. But when they get their best 11, it's going to look a lot better than what it did today because, you know, I think with Tanali and Fernandez in there, they should be out of control of the game. And Marmouss is obviously going to be a really good sign in if they can get him. If they get him and Savino over the line. Marmoussha and upgrade, as Jamie said on, on Rochalesson, and potentially on, so Lanke, certainly in terms of consistency of availability. What are your thoughts, is he? Two players that arguably have their yet proved themselves in the Premier League, I would argue, no. Are they two players that are talented, yes? They've been at Manchester City, and you don't sign from Manchester City, unless you've got an abundance of talent. You know, what we get with Marmoussha is a play. He's a different type of nine. He's not necessarily a hold up play nine. He's a nine that looks to make those sort of clever little runs, pick up clever little pockets. And as we can see here, when he's given time and space, he's got this one. How about this thing? Very deep. Very deep. Yeah, I don't want him to drop in and think if he does that. No problem at all. No problem at all. I've seen it. I've seen it. I'll lovely goals in my Marmoussha, but only three of them in 21 appearances. Yeah, and I think that what Tottenham need, and we speak about this deserving style of play that we hang our hat on, that we think he's going to want to implement, and the players at the top have to stick to them. And then this is an example of what you get with Savino drifting in. He played on both sides for Manchester City, the left and the right. You know, he's got incredible dribbling skills, one V1 skills, which is exactly what deserve you will need. But again, I'm going to say it in a deserving team, the way that we've interpreted their football bright in it at Marseille, is these wide players have to be able to retain the ball and secure the ball under intense pressure when they build. But you can see here these moments are fantastic. We've got to remember this is Manchester City. This is one of the elite teams in England. What do you think players? What do you think Tottenham need? I think they need a bigger target nine. I think they need a nine who's almost like a... I don't know. I don't want to say a Yoko res. But like a player that's got a little bit of what Marmouche brings in terms of dropping deep, but I think a bit more physical presence up top, Oshman perhaps. You know, just sort of a player with a bit more box presence. Salanki has that presence, but he doesn't do it consistently enough. And like you said, he shows it in moments. But I think if Spurs are going to look the way that we think a deserving side will, that number nine plays such a crucial role in their build-up phases through the pitch. And the ball has to stick. Has to stick, or you have to be able to have that one to touch ability to bring somebody else into play consistently. Well, like we saw at Brighton with the likes of Danny Welberg. And it comes back to what Roberto Deserbio said before the game, before he'd seen a side lose by three goals to know that this squad was by no means complete. And we know that they're interested in those two players that we've looked at. Potentially, they might be looking at more. Spurs have had a big spending summer, but it's yet to gel for them after that opening game. For Brentford, though, they've had consistency over this summer and it's shown in their performance against Tottenham. We'll get the thoughts of their boss. Keith Andrews is up next. Now let's get more reaction to today's game on the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. Welcome back to the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. It's time to get more analysis of today's match and head back to the studio. Mamadu Sangare pushed forward in front of the Brentford fans by his teamwates to take their plaudits on what was a player of the match performance from him on his debut for Brentford. They paid a record-breaking transfer fee for him and it looks alive after one game. It's paid off. The Brentford fans on analysis rated him 92. He is their top rated player. Also worth having a look at the two managers for contrast. Keith Andrews on 90. Roberta Deservie on 35 after that opening game of the season. So very different perspectives on the managers. We'll hear from Keith Andrews shortly. But Mamadu Sangare, 92 on the analysis ratings. Player of the match performance. We touched on it earlier when we were looking at his role in Kindle as Potter's goal, for example. What did you make of his all-round contribution, Jamie? Well, it was a sensational debut. I think for a minute one, you just controlled that game. He got the speed of the game very quickly. He's got that lovely cultured left foot. He's progressive when he goes with a ball. He passes forward every time he gets it. Those types of passes that you want to see from a midfield player. He wins jewels. I just thought he was absolutely magnificent. He made the game look so easy today. And it's not always, especially as a midfielder, everyone talks about the pace of the Premier League. How difficult it is to adjust to it. He adjusted in about five seconds. He was just magnificent. I said before the game, it was a really bright, intelligent piece of management, his agent, himself, to come to Brentford is the perfect place to develop. Because there's no doubt he's a... You can see it. You haven't got to be a sport scientist to realise that's an elite footballer who would be watching tonight. And he can play for a top four club. But the time is maybe not yet. He's just got to climb that ladder slowly. Don't think it's about getting there as quickly as possible. I think for Brentford for a year or two will be perfect. It's the perfect position for him. The fans will love him. They'll learn under key fan Jews. And then when the right time comes, they'll find the next sangari and they'll sell him on for an absolute fortune. And that's what football, that's what it's about. It's about recruitment, getting the right players in. And I was so impressed today. I thought it was absolutely magnificent. I can't think of too many midfield debuts that have been as good as that in a long time. No, totally echo what you've said. I think the humility as well is post-match interview. With Johnny was lovely as well. You can see him hit the nail on the head. The humility to come to a club like Brentford as well. Like you say, you know he knows he's going to develop. He was reading before the game, Keith Andrews, what he said about him when he signed for Brentford was that he fits everything he wants to Brentford play to be. Now that tells me two things. That Keith Andrews got a very clear vision about how he wants to look, losing Jordan Henderson, replacing him with that guy 24 years old, experience of winning last season with lawns in the Coupe de France as well, which I think always adds something to it. That winning mentality, which is really important. So I think they've got themselves an absolute gem. You know what I like as well? Sorry, Keith, I was just going to say, in football now we label, he's a six, he's a eight, he's a ten. He's just a midfield player. He's just an all-round midfield player that can do everything. And it's quite refreshing to see that, because everyone now even, I watch young players play, and they're already playing in their positions. He's just like a brilliant boxer-box player that will get in the final fern and score goals. That we'll probably see him making goal-saving tackles. There's just nothing he can't do. You know, you could already see it. And what he did in the French league, I won't pronounce it, Kelly, because I made a league out of it. I said, league one. Was he going to go from league one? Someone sent to me. No, they didn't get him from league one. Don't worry. But no, great recruitment from Brentford. And you can see he's going to be a superstar, honestly. Yeah, absolutely. And particularly, as you say, when he's got that freedom to play where he needs to on the pitch, because that seems to be what Keith Andrews plan is for this season. We can hear a bit more from the Brentford boss now. He's with Johnny Phillips. Keith, you never quite know when you go through a preseason, what it would be like on the first day, but did that exceed all your expectations? Yeah, I've been through enough to know that. And as good as I was feeling about where we were, you never truly know. You never truly know where the opposition are, really. You get a sense of it from the games they play, but I had to feel the intensity of those games from watching on our laptops and meetings we have around us. So, yeah, I'm really happy what we've produced. From your perspective, what did you like about the performance? It was just us. It was us from the first whistle. It was intensive. It was relentless. It was filled with a way of playing that's very difficult to play against. It was filled with individual quality and their personality, which I really, really love and what underlying at all was just that, that togetherness that we have in a bunch. You spent the bulk of this summer money on Mamadu, San Gare, did we see just exactly why he's worth that today? I think he's a top player. Yeah, there's no doubt about it. He's the one we were after in the window. The club has had a lot of credit for the work that they did, and it was really important that we tried to get him over the line. He deserves a lot of credit, I think, because I think he could have gone elsewhere, potentially for a few more Bob. But I think you recognise that this will be a good place for him to come. And he's helped quite nicely. And the dynamics he brings to the midfield as well, does that strengthen in other areas, even though it's the same person, are they showing what they're about now, too? I think when you bring in a really good player, it really brings the level of the team or the players look around the dressing room and think, OK, there's competition for places, naturally in that area of the pitch, but you're right. In terms of the knock on effect to that, the front line protection that the back four get now. But that's not to underestimate what we already have. You can see Yama look coming on, and the impact he had, dams came on, and really, and that's what we really need. It's a long long season, as you know, we need strength and depth, and we certainly have that in that position. And is that with particular reference to finishing out games? I know you didn't need to, particularly today, but do you feel that will be a benefit going forward? I think it was really important today, the impact of the Ben Chads, look at the right-hand sides, Jaden Antonin and Aaron Hickey came on, and gave us real energy and determination and craft down there. Middling midfield, I've just touched on the two, and then obviously we've brought on a pretty proven striker and columnal. Jamie Redknock described some of the stuff as total football out there today. Do you feel you're really evolving in the way the players are going about it? I'm just really comfortable where we are in the journey that we're on. There's going to be bumps in the road. Everybody knows that. It's football. It's a sole proper of football, and we just need to deal with that week to week, and we're going to try and enjoy the journey. It's only one game, but you just missed out on your last season. You've got a clear run at it. Again, this season, do you feel you can go one better? The plan is to get better. I think that's pretty evident then what getting better means, and we're going to keep pushing, keep striving. Today's just a start, hopefully. Well done. Thank you, Johnny. Brilliant. Look, then, what are you two doing? He's not having his total football, is he? No, I'm not. No, he's not having his own football. Oh, sorry. No. The goal was total football. He probably doesn't want to do it. No, of course. He's playing it down. He's playing it down. But he was bound by the way. Particularly because they made such improvements last season. I know we keep saying how unsettled their preseason was last time around. The expectations were rock bottom. I think you said at the start of last season, Jamie. Brentford's first goal is just to stay up. They're equal their record Premier League finish. They were ninth as they were in 22-23 under Thomas Frank. And they did it having lost some of their best players. What is now, do you think the ambition for Brentford is it to push for European football? Is it to try and win the first major trophy of the club's history? Well, that would be the dream, wouldn't it? Obviously, Keith would love that. And he doesn't want to put too much pressure on his team or the club. And I totally get that. But I look at the squad and the options that they've got, as long as they remain injury-free. Because last year, they picked up a few injuries towards the end of the season. And it was a bit unfortunate that they did probably an up-cost in them. But night-flast year, Thomas Frank had a night as well, which was obviously an incredible achievement. But night, I think when I look at that squad, Keith would probably be in his quietest moments at home, think we can beat that with this squad. Especially they keep the likes of San Garefear and playing at that level. Kalam Wilson is a really good sign in. I think the defence looks really strong. I wouldn't be surprised if there's still one more to maybe come in. They've been talking about, do you off the left back from West Ham? It would be a really good sign in all of that. Keith Lewis potters a really good player. But do you just need strength in depth? You look at what Arsenal have done. You know, to get extra players in, not like I'm not going to play, it's just actually we need that squad depth just to make sure we can compete. And when I look at Brentford and the way that they do things, it is totally unique. It's an amazing job what they do there with the recruitment and the way they look after the players and the quality that they do things that are with. It's been an amazing achievement. So yeah, I do believe they can get into Europe this year, but it certainly won't be easy. And they're certainly not going to tell us at this stage of the season that Europe is there, they're ambition, but they missed out by one goal, ten minutes of added time in the final game of the season. If that goal had gone in by Retara, they would have been in Europe this season. They were so close as he, can they take the next step? They can, but I think they've got no better man at the helm than Keith Andrews in terms of managing the expectations as well. Success for them, in my opinion, is getting around that area of ninths again towards the end of the season, where they've got the capacity to jump and maybe in the last three, four games have the opportunity to nick a few more points which climbs up into eighth, seventh and therefore get in European football. And the other thing as well is whether you've got to be as a club structurally underneath. You're not just the players, the staff, but the ability to play in Europe and compete in Europe requires so much more resource and so much more depth. We spoke about the squad depth of Tottenham, but the squad depth at Brentford, it's sort of like how can they add? And like Keith Andrews just alluded to there, the teams that San Gare could have gone to, but he chose Brentford, it's a step forward. It really is a step forward, but it doesn't guarantee European football. It guarantees you continuation of growth. And like I said, I don't think there's any better guy at the helm than Keith Andrews to take them on that journey, and they're just trying to get better every week, that's simply what Brentford is trying to do. You're going to be so hard to play against yourself. You're looking at that because they've got, really hard in every single aspect in terms of the set pieces, but they can also really play, and that's what I meant about total football with their goal. So they're going to give teams so many problems. I still think they're probably about playing down what I've said.
