Baggaley Moves to St Andrew's

Newly-promoted Birmingham City have secured their latest summer reinforcement ahead of the upcoming campaign. The Blues confirmed the signing of former Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley on a free transfer following the expiration of her contract on the South Coast.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper brings extensive top-flight experience to Birmingham's squad as they prepare for life back in the Women's Super League. Baggaley left Brighton earlier this summer after completing a two-year stint where she regularly rotated between the posts.

Midlands Return and Goalkeeping Department Impact

For Baggaley, the move represents a return to familiar territory in the Midlands. The keeper previously featured for Birmingham City on loan early in her career before establishing herself during stints at Bristol City and Manchester United. Her arrival provides immediate competition for the starting spot under manager Amy Merricks.

Birmingham's recruitment drive has accelerated quickly following their promotion from the Championship. Securing a proven WSL keeper without paying a transfer fee leaves financial flexibility for additional squad upgrades before the window closes.

The Tactical fit

Baggaley recorded 14 appearances across all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign with Brighton. Known for her shot-stopping ability and tactical distribution, she will be expected to anchor a backline adjusting to higher-tier pressure. Her experience in relegation battles with Bristol City could prove just as vital as her time in high-expectation environments like Manchester United.

The Blues kick off their pre-season fixtures next month. Baggaley is expected to join the squad immediately for pre-season training ahead of the league opener in September.
