1. Executive Overview: Core Theses & Key Revelations

The post-match atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following Saturday evening's goalless stalemate against Everton was defined by an unmistakable binary contrast: the triumphant satisfaction of a disciplined visiting side and the sharp, vocal disquiet of a home support witnessing an unprecedented scoring famine. For the first time in the venue's Premier League history, a match concluded without a single goal scored by either side. More alarmingly for Tottenham Hotspur, the result extended their league goal drought past the 360-minute mark—a full six hours of Premier League football without finding the back of the net. With a meager tally of two points from their opening four fixtures, the North London club finds itself mired in an early-season operational crisis that defies both financial logic and tactical expectation.

This masterclass analytical essay examines the core paradox currently engulfing Tottenham: the profound disconnect between monumental capital expenditure and functional offensive output. Having committed upwards of £300 million in the transfer market to construct a squad rich in technical quality, Spurs present the outward appearance of an elite modern outfit. Yet, as former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp scathingly noted during the post-match debrief on the Sky Sports Premier League Podcast, the team resembles "the most expensive jigsaw puzzle in the Premier League," immaculate in its individual packaging, yet critically missing two or three fundamental structural pieces.

The central thesis of this investigation is that Tottenham's current sterility is not an isolated variance of bad luck or conversion variance, but the predictable consequence of a structural and tactical mismatch. Under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs have established a possession-heavy regime capable of invading opposition territory with remarkable frequency—evidenced by De Zerbi's revelation that his side penetrated Everton's penalty area "gallery" 74 times. However, this spatial dominance has yielded astonishingly low-value chances. De Zerbi's rigid build-up automations, designed to bait high presses, collapse into impotent lateral recycling when confronted by low-block defensive structures that refuse to step out. Coupled with player risk-aversion in the final third and a squad composition heavily tilted toward ball-dominant wingers rather than off-ball runners, Tottenham's £300 million investment has created an asymmetrical engine that rotates endlessly without generating forward thrust.

Analytical Dimension Empirical Observation & Metric Tactical & Structural Implication
Offensive Production 360+ consecutive minutes without a Premier League goal (0 goals in 4 matches) Severe breakdown in final-third chance quality and movement inside the penalty box.
Spatial Dominance 74 entries into Everton's defensive "gallery" / penalty area zone Extreme inefficiency; high territorial control failing to yield high-value expected goals (xG).
Financial Allocation £300M+ total squad assembly investment across recent windows Profile redundancy: surplus of lateral creators; deficit of vertical runners and box predators.
Defensive Resistance Everton low-block led by Tarkowski & Branthwaite (0 goals conceded) Strategic victory for low-block containment; funneling Spurs into low-risk wide cut-backs.

2. Context & Background: The Landscape Leading to This Conversation

To understand the depth of Tottenham's current predicament, one must contextualize the high-stakes summer transformation undertaken at the club. The appointment of Roberto De Zerbi was heralded as a definitive statement of tactical ambition. De Zerbi brought a world-renowned positional philosophy built around short build-up play, central overload combinations, and micro-adjusted resting positions intended to manipulate opposition pressing structures. To facilitate this transformation, the Tottenham hierarchy authorized an aggressive rebuilding initiative, committing over £300 million to acquire top-tier talent across every line of the pitch.

The arrival of high-profile names—including Dominic Solanke as the focal point center-forward, Savinho as a dynamic wide isolator, Mohammed Kudus, James Maddison, Mathys Tel, Omar Marmoush, and defensive reinforcements—was expected to guarantee an explosive attacking dynamic. The underlying hypothesis was straightforward: equip De Zerbi with elite individual ball-manipulators, and his system would naturally yield a high-volume scoring machine capable of challenging the Premier League elite.

However, the early reality of the campaign has completely subverted this hypothesis. Premier League opposition managers have conducted meticulous tactical studies of De Zerbi's patterns. Rather than biting on Spurs' deep build-up baits, defensive coordinators have increasingly deployed compact, deep-lying mid-and-low blocks. By denying Tottenham space behind the defensive line and clogging the central half-spaces, opponents have effectively neutralized Spurs' primary mechanisms of chance creation. Entering Matchday 4 against Sean Dyche's Everton, Spurs were already under intense scrutiny following back-to-back scoreless outings. The 0-0 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium did not merely confirm a trend; it consolidated a blueprint for how to neutralize De Zerbi's side.

3. Deep-Dive Thematic Breakdown

3.1 The £300M Jigsaw Puzzle: Disconnected Components and Structural Asymmetry

The primary structural diagnosis offered by Jamie Redknapp centers on the balance of Tottenham's squad construction. A financial outlay exceeding £300 million typically guarantees squad depth, yet Tottenham's recruitment strategy appears to have accumulated talent without establishing functional complementarity. Redknapp's analogy of an expensive jigsaw puzzle missing key pieces captures the core issue: Spurs possess an abundance of ball-dominant flair players, but lack the structural connective tissue required to convert possession into penetration.

In modern football roster construction, profile diversity is mandatory. An elite attacking unit requires a precise distribution of roles: wide stretchers who hold maximum width, interior manipulators who operate between the lines, and vertical runners who relentlessly attack the space behind the defensive line. Tottenham's current frontline features an over-representation of ball-to-feet operators. Players like Savinho, Mohammed Kudus, and James Maddison excel when receiving the ball facing play, but each demands the ball directly into their feet to initiate actions. When multiple players share this exact operational profile, attacking sequences become static, as opponents can maintain compact defensive lines without fearing vertical runs in behind.

Furthermore, structural asymmetry on the left flank has exacerbated Tottenham's predictability. The pre-match injury to Mykhailo Mudryk deprived De Zerbi of his primary natural left-sided winger capable of stretching the pitch through raw speed and direct dribbling. In response, De Zerbi was forced into continuous tactical shifts—deploying Mathys Tel out of position on the left wing, later shifting him central, and introducing Kudus into central attacking midfield roles. This constant positional rotation during matches reflects a manager searching desperately for balance mid-game, creating operational confusion among players who have yet to master basic positional chemistry.

3.2 The 74-Entry Paradox: High-Volume Possession vs. Zero High-Value Creation

Perhaps the most startling statistical insight from the podcast came directly from Roberto De Zerbi, who revealed that Tottenham registered 74 entries into Everton's defensive "gallery"—the penalty area and immediate half-space corridors. In classical analytics, 74 box entries would typically indicate an overwhelming offensive bombardment that ought to yield multiple goals. Yet, Spurs ended the match with zero goals and a critically low expected goals (xG) return per entry.

This disconnect highlights the concept of non-threatening spatial control. Entering the opponent's 18-yard box is only valuable if the entry destabilizes the defensive shape or leads to high-probability shooting conditions. Against Everton, Tottenham's box entries were predominantly low-risk, perimeter-based movements. As Redknapp highlighted in his detailed match commentary, Spurs' attacking players repeatedly chose safety over audacity:

  • Predictable Cut-Back Automations: Savinho consistently received the ball in wide areas against Everton's full-backs but declined opportunities to drive down the exterior line. Instead, he repeatedly checked back onto his stronger left foot, recycling play laterally into an already congested central corridor.
  • Penetration Refusal in Central Corridors: When passes were successfully broken into the feet of central players inside the box—such as a key sequence involving Mathys Tel—the receiving player immediately opted to lay the ball back outside the 18-yard box rather than turning, driving into space, or taking a shot on goal.
  • Lack of Box Occupation: Dominic Solanke found himself isolated among Everton's physically commanding center-backs. Without secondary runners making destabilizing third-man runs into the six-yard box, Everton's central defenders were able to clear wide crosses without breaking shape.

The result was a continuous loop of sterile possession: Spurs would manipulate the ball around Everton's defensive shell, enter the outer boundary of the box ("the gallery"), encounter a wall of blue shirts, and immediately retreat to reset the pattern. Risk-aversion became the defining trait of Tottenham's attacking play.

3.3 De Zerbismo Under Fire: Process, Pressure, and the Pragmatism Dilemma

The post-match remarks from Roberto De Zerbi offer a window into the tactical dogma that defines his coaching ideology. When questioned about mounting supporter discontent and media criticism, De Zerbi offered a sharp defense of his domain: "I'm not a journalist, I don't write on social media. I just coach and I have to analyze the performances." He went on to express sympathy for the fans while insisting their frustrated reaction was entirely normal given the scoreline.

De Zerbi's response underscores the fundamental tension between process-oriented tactical coaching and the pragmatic realities of elite football management. From De Zerbi's perspective, the process is functioning in terms of territorial dominance and build-up execution. He sees 74 box entries and superior possession metrics as proof that his structural mechanics are successfully moving the team into the final third. In his view, the failure lies purely in the execution of the final action—the final pass, shot, or decision.

However, this analytical perspective overlooks how De Zerbi's rigid system can strip players of individual spontaneity. When players are trained to follow strict positional automations, they can become hesitant to take individual risks that deviate from the blueprint. In the Premier League, where physical compression and defensive recovery speeds are elite, relying purely on pre-programmed combinations without individual brilliance or unpredictable risk-taking leads directly to the paralysis observed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. De Zerbi faces a growing pragmatism dilemma: must he modify his dogmatic build-up structures to allow more direct, high-tempo attacking play, or does he double down on his process until the execution improves?

3.4 Everton's Low-Block Blueprint: Tarkowski, Branthwaite, and Low-xG Containment

While Tottenham's struggles dominated the narrative, Everton's defensive performance provided a masterclass in modern low-block resilience. Speaking live on the podcast following the final whistle, Everton captain James Tarkowski outlined the tactical clarity with which Sean Dyche's side approached the fixture. Tarkowski candidly admitted that Everton were well aware of Spurs' goal drought entering the match, and targeted Tottenham's fragile confidence as a psychological leverage point.

Tarkowski described an initial 20-minute period of extreme intensity where Tottenham played at "a hundred miles an hour," pressing aggressively and forcing Everton into hasty clearances and unforced errors. However, Everton's game plan hinged on structural composure: absorbing the initial emotional charge, maintaining tight distances between the midfield and defensive lines, and waiting for Spurs' tempo to naturally decay.

The central defensive partnership of James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite was fundamental to this strategy. Branthwaite's athletic recovery speed complemented Tarkowski's aerial dominance and positional reading. Together, they neutralized Tottenham's delivery into the box through several key defensive mechanics:

  • Channel Closure: Everton allowed Spurs to pass freely in front of their defensive line but aggressively collapsed as soon as the ball entered the half-spaces or central box area.
  • Aerial Supremacy: Tarkowski and Branthwaite dominated high balls into the penalty box, reducing Solanke's impact as a target man and winning secondary second-ball duels.
  • Selective Counter-Attacking: As the match progressed, Everton grew in confidence, creating clean transition chances through Keenan, Beto, and Barry that could easily have secured all three points for the visitors.

Tarkowski's post-match analysis confirmed that Everton felt comfortable managing Tottenham's possession because Spurs rarely threatened the space behind them. By keeping the play in front of their defensive line, Everton maintained total control over shot quality, leaving Jordan Pickford with a comfortable evening despite Tottenham's high pass counts.

3.5 The Wider Premier League Landscape: Early Season Volatility

The goalless outcome between Tottenham and Everton must also be viewed within the broader context of a volatile Matchday 4 across the Premier League. The weekend results reflected a growing tactical parity across the league, where well-drilled defensive structures and tactical clarity frequently nullify vast wage and transfer budget differentials.

Elsewhere across the league, Oliver Glasner secured his first victory with Crystal Palace in a hard-fought contest against Aston Villa, while Ipswich Town triumphed 3-2 over Palace in a thrilling encounter featuring goals from Liam Delap, Igor Jesus, and Fleming. Meanwhile, newly promoted Hull City produced a remarkable performance to hold Chelsea to a 2-2 draw, leading twice through a Balumi brace before Joao Pedro rescued a point for the Londoners. Even at Anfield, Fulham held Liverpool to a scoreless draw. These results demonstrate that early-season chemistry and defensive cohesion are currently outperforming expensive, newly assembled rosters across the top flight.

4. Speaker Perspectives & Analytical Contrast

The post-match discussion on the Sky Sports Premier League Podcast brought into sharp relief three distinct footballing worldviews: the pragmatic media pundit (Jamie Redknapp), the dogmatic head coach (Roberto De Zerbi), and the battle-tested defensive operator (James Tarkowski). Examining their perspectives highlights the multi-dimensional nature of Tottenham's crisis.

Speaker Diagnostic Focus Assessment of Squad & Performance Primary Remediation Strategy
Jamie Redknapp
(Sky Sports Pundit)
Player responsibility, risk-aversion, and unbalanced squad assembly. Labels 6-hour goal drought "diabolical." Describes £300M squad as an incomplete jigsaw puzzle lacking balance. Demands players take individual risks, drive past full-backs, play forward into striker's feet, and add missing squad pieces.
Roberto De Zerbi
(Spurs Head Coach)
Structural execution, process validation, and final-third refinement. Cites 74 box entries as evidence of good tactical play; accepts fan frustration as normal reaction to missing goals. Focuses on continuous coaching, analyzing film, refining positional automations, and converting spatial dominance into chances.
James Tarkowski
(Everton Captain)
Defensive organization, spatial compression, and game management. Acknowledges Spurs' individual talent but notes Everton successfully weathered early high-tempo pressure. Maintain low-block compactness, force wide recycling, and exploit psychological fragility as opponent confidence dips.

Redknapp's critique is fundamentally human and observational. He focuses on the psychological burden weighing on Tottenham's players, identifying a fear of failure that manifests as safe, lateral passing. When Redknapp notes that Tel received the ball in the box and played it straight back out, or that Savinho refused to go down the outside, he is pointing to a breakdown in athletic confidence. For Redknapp, no amount of tactical drill work can replace individual courage and raw directness.

De Zerbi, by contrast, operates through a clinical, system-first lens. He views the match not as an emotional narrative of fear, but as a series of structural interactions. To De Zerbi, penetrating the opponent's gallery 74 times proves that the system works. His defense of his role—"I just coach and I have to analyze the performances"—reveals a belief that if the team continues to execute his patterns, the goals will inevitably follow. This intellectual stance creates a stark contrast with the emotional reality of the supporters in the stands who demand immediate, tangible goalscoring entertainment.

Tarkowski provides the essential bridge between these two perspectives. As an opponent, he experienced De Zerbi's system in real-time. His observation that Tottenham were "all over us" for the first 20 minutes validates De Zerbi's claim of initial dominance. However, Tarkowski's ability to remain calm derived from his recognition that Spurs' dominance was non-lethal. Once Everton established their low-block rhythm, they felt in complete command of the penalty area, proving Redknapp's point that Spurs lacked the specific profile tools to break them down.

5. Strategic & Industry Implications

The tactical and operational dilemma facing Tottenham Hotspur carries profound implications for squad building and tactical management in modern elite football. The core lessons emerging from Spurs' early-season collapse offer a case study in the perils of modern recruitment and tactical dogmatism.

5.1 The Limits of Capital Expenditure Without Structural Balance

Tottenham's summer spending spree illustrates a recurring trap in elite football: mistaking financial outlay for squad construction. Spending £300 million guarantees high market-value assets, but it does not guarantee a functioning tactical ecosystem. When recruitment focuses heavily on acquiring individual talent without strict alignment to positional synergy, clubs risk building unbalanced rosters.

Spurs currently suffer from acute profile redundancy. Acquiring multiple ball-dominant attacking midfielders and wide isolators without pairing them with elite off-ball runners, dynamic overlap options, or complementary central forwards creates functional gridlock. Roster architects must prioritize functional complementary roles—balancing creators with runners, and ball-recorders with box-occupiers—rather than simply hoarding high-value technical talent.

5.2 The Evolution of Anti-De Zerbi Low-Blocks

Roberto De Zerbi's tactical fame was built on enticing opponents into pressing his teams high up the pitch, thereby creating vast spaces behind the press to exploit. However, the Premier League is a highly reactive tactical laboratory. Elite and mid-table managers alike have realized that the most effective counter-measure to De Zerbismo is simple refusal: refusing to press high, refusing to leave space behind, and defending deep with disciplined compact banks.

When opponents refuse to engage in press-baiting, De Zerbi's build-up mechanics lose their primary trigger. Without high space to attack, Spurs are forced into playing against set low-blocks—a phase of play that requires patient, high-risk creative individual actions rather than pre-planned build-up automations. If De Zerbi cannot evolve his tactical toolkit to dismantle low-blocks through varied attacking dynamics, his teams will continue to suffer from high possession and zero conversion against deep-defending sides.

6. Looking Ahead: Unresolved Questions & Next Milestones

As Tottenham Hotspur navigate this early-season storm, several critical questions remain unanswered. The coming weeks will determine whether Roberto De Zerbi can adapt his operational philosophy to salvage Spurs' domestic campaign or whether the club's financial investment will remain trapped in structural stagnation.

  • Can De Zerbi Integrate Profile Complementarity? Will the return of injured players like Mykhailo Mudryk provide the necessary width and vertical pace to unbalance low-blocks, or must De Zerbi fundamentally adjust his central combinations?
  • Psychological Recovery and Risk Tolerance: How quickly can De Zerbi unlock the confidence of players like Savinho and Mathys Tel, encouraging them to take high-risk dribbling and shooting options in the box rather than retreating into safe lateral passing?
  • Squad Balance in the Next Transfer Window: Will the Spurs board be forced to re-enter the transfer market to recruit the "two or three missing pieces" highlighted by Jamie Redknapp, specifically a penetration-focused midfielder and a dynamic box-running attacker?
  • Critical Milestones to Monitor: Analysts will be scrutinizing key underlying metrics over Tottenham's next five fixtures—specifically expected goals (xG) per 90, shot distance average, percentage of forward passes inside the box, and big chances created. Failure to improve these metrics will intensify supporter unrest and place immense pressure on De Zerbi's position.

Tottenham Hotspur stand at a critical fork in the road. The talent is present, the financial commitment has been made, and the tactical framework is established. Yet, until Spurs can synthesize their expensive individual parts into a cohesive, risk-taking, and lethal attacking force, their £300 million jigsaw puzzle will remain a monument to unfulfilled potential in the Premier League.

Thanks for joining us on the Sky Sports Premier League podcast. We were at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Saturday night football, as Spurs went up against Everton. Here's how the evening unfolded. The first schoolers Premier League match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and booze ring around. It's symptomatic of the problems faced by Roberto Deservi, whose team are now heading towards seven hours without a Premier League goal since they beat Everton at the back end of last season. Savio Sparkle, but at truth, the chances were few and far between Jan Paul Van Hecker's early attempt, not really followed up too consistently. And Everton will be pleased that their unbeaten record at the start of this season is extended, but for Spurs with only two points from their opening four Premier League matches, the worries continue to grow. Tottenham Nell, Everton Nell. Coaching goes on. Roberto Deservi is wasting no time trying to get some important messages to his players. I guess that's frustration of what he's witnessed. He made the substitutions. They didn't have the impact that he hoped and desired. And hence why those Spurs fans are booing again at full time. Jamie Redden at Propossus Goals. Yep. So it's your fault, James. That's one of Michael's shares. Not Michael, it's actually his fault. That's two Nilsie's at on the Saturday night football game. Last week, Paul last week. Yeah, it's not Michael's fault. But they were challenging that game. There weren't too many tonight, were there? I didn't have it on my phone. Great point for them. Wait, what is he thinking now, Jamie? Well, out of all the things that they've done spending 300 million, why are the problems I thought when they assembled this one would be a lack of gold? I didn't see that one. I thought that they might struggle to win games, just a little bit of team, few teaming problems. I thought about the players I've got in the field, in the field, Fernandez, Tanali, Marmousse, Savinia. I thought, surely even Kudos come off the bed. Surely they have goals in this team, but to not score in the Premier League into football, I mean, our games are six hours now. Six hours of football is absolutely diabolical, whatever way you look at it. They defended better today. I thought the two set the backs were better than what they had been, but just not enough. It's a lanky up front. I looked at the team, well, that started to take shape, but no, they have to find it, but actually not score in six hours of football. That's absolutely incredible. What did you make of them, actually? I thought they were poor, second half. You know, I think the first 20 minutes, they showed signs that they were going to come out and they were going to be on front foot and they were in great chances, but, you know, towards the end of the first half, I think, ever and grew into it. And then the second half you thought, right, this is the opportunity, they're going to come out now and they're going to create more and more chances. You know, we spoke about Saviour a half time and, you know, I didn't see him go past him with the lanky. You know, he kept from coming back on his left foot and playing it inside. I think it was, it was just taking the easy option. You know, when you want to see a midfielder or a forward, you know, take on a full back court, you know, play a ball into the striker's feet, you're in the box. There was one pass into Tell, and he played it, back out the box, you know, it's just too safe. There needs to be more risk to be in take him. You've been part of teams which have been expected to be assembled with big pressure, big expectation. How do they get through this? They need to work on it and keep working on it. You know, you sort of managed it after the game there, talking to Tell, I don't know what you're saying about taking it on your back foot, but, you know, as a professional, you're going to, you're going to look at that and think, right, six hours, we've not scored a goal. It's a disgrace. It's not good enough at all. And there needs to be a big conversation amongst players, players will talk and say, you know, we've got to take this on ourself, you know, we've brought in players and we're just not scoring goals, we're not creating the chances and we're not looking like a team that's going to score. They can't believe it, can they, 17th twice? And now this, having spent over 300 million pounds, this expensively assembled team, so far, has not delivered, it's down to this season. That sums it up. That says it all, doesn't it? That was to have made that two weeks ago. Never mind that, four weeks ago. Oh, God. Done. But it's incredibly, like, you know, you spend, well, 300 million pounds, it's the money and most expensive jigsaw puzzles in Premier League, probably assembling that. But it looks beautiful. We opened it up and there's two or three pieces missing. They've not got the right balance in that team, you know, I know they're probably unfortunate this week. Mudric picks up an injury. You might have been out of come on that left-hand side. But try to fit people in, that will be driving the manager mad because you can see he's trying different formations. He's trying to throw everything into it, he's bringing Madison into 10, Kudos into the 10, he puts 10 on the left wing, then he puts him up front, takes off Salanki, there's so many different problems that he's trying to solve in a game, just to find a goal. But he just couldn't do it. It was nothing they did. It made you think that they was really going to open up or have a bit of quality. Sometimes you've got too many skillful players, too many flare players that want to try and go past people. But that face sums it up, it's an honest and that one. That's fantastic. They just stunned and Emerson fans, delighted their team is still unbeaten, picked up another point away from home against a team that beat them twice last season. We did get goals elsewhere today and plenty of them as well and a first forest swim for Oliver Glasner, Villa beating again. Just like last year, it's a really tricky start for them. Igor Jesus with the late winner after Liam Delapid scored for Forest, Alison had got the goal from Villa's perspective as the end Fleming off the mark for Ipswich Town. Someone who won away for the first time under Garry O'Neal this time at Sellhurst Park and why not. Big celebration in front of their fans. They've had a really good start to the season. As have Hull City, this extraordinary start for them continues. They had Chelsea frightened today. Two goals from Balumi had them leading until Shurao Pedro's late equaliser. Really good start from them. Eight points on the board already for Hull City, were only four games in and everyone had written them off. Four goals shared between Bournemouth and Brentford. Chelsea conceding two again. Ipswich has been seen beating Palace 3-2. Fullen with the first point of the season, it came at Anfield in a game of few chances and another goal that's drawn here between Spurs and Everton. You can scan that QR code. First ever goal to straw in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hot Spurs stadium, Spurs fans shaking their heads but another clean sheet for Jordan Pickford and Wild Spurs wishes are clear. Everton remain unbeaten four games into this season and I'm very pleased to say that James Tarkovsky was marshaling that back for is going to speak to us live on the Tottenham Hot Spurs stadium. Congratulations James, how was it from your perspective? It's tough early, very tough I thought they started and it really well made it really difficult for ourselves but we stuck in there, punny blocks, punny tackles. I think as the game went on we sort of grew into it, built into the game and then pointed me in a couple of chances where I feel like we could have took three points but on the road we'll always take a clean sheet and a point, especially going to a place like this one. And all of that had a great start to the season but they made a lot of good signings, a lot of quality players and to say clean sheets nice. So in that early stage, how were they making life difficult for you? The game felt a hundred mile an hour, it felt like you didn't have a moment to breathe. Every time they give it away they were just in your face immediately, won the ball back and we made some bad decisions, didn't make a good pass, poor touch but there were all over us to be fair and we just managed to stick in there. It was always going to settle down at some point and on set it did we started growing to the game and started to create our own chances. What do you spoke before the game about the fact that this spurs team hadn't scored yet and if you could get through that first part of the game that maybe their confidence would dip? We were aware of the fact that they're not scored but still, if you look at their plays and their team and even the subs that they brought on, they were top-top side so also not in great form at the minute themselves but they're always dangerous and you start today how good they can be with the chances they created but we managed to get bodies on the line and stop the ball going in on it. It's a lucky, young year mate, good to see you. Hello Ashley. How are you mate? How are you mate? I'm better than seeing you. That's the smile of the lights. I know it seemed it was tough tonight like you said and I'm sure the game plan was to stay in it from the first 15 or 20 minutes but did you think that the chances that you created you could have gone on in one of the game? I do, yeah. I can't remember all of them but when you sit down in the dressing room there you start to reflect on the game briefly. I remember Keenan where he nicked it on the edge of the box, had an opportunity. We had a couple of pullbacks, Keenan putting it over the bar, Barry had a header so we've never been a team that creates lots and lots of chances but we need to be clinical when we can be and today we think managed to do that but as I said, point on the road, unbeaten so far in the season then we're going to a week now, we've got a cook game and Ipswich at home and hope we can have a really good week. James Jamie, red nap, congratulations. I don't know how to shoot back your defensive partnership. I think you and John Brownthweight really complement each other well obviously, he's that injuries but if he gets a run in the team, it feels like you two could be formidable. Good in both boxes, defend well, if one's at a place you always seem to find that time to help each other, you've just got a really good balance. Yeah, we've sort of worked on that at the time and Judd is an amazing partner to have next to him, he's as strong as an ox, rapid, brilliant on the ball, two-footed, communicates really well and we've sort of grew together last year, it was difficult for him, he didn't play many games and missed a lot of football but he's come back, fit and flying and you see tonight, the quality's got the matter tackles on box and X but also very composed and comfortable on the ball so hopefully that continues for him. I know you've come out and spoken to us but what did the Gaffer say after? Was he pleased at that point or did he feel that maybe he could have got the three? I mean we always want to win a game and obviously we did have an opportunity to score goals on when you've kept a clean shake, you're hoping you can get one from somewhere but with a point on the ball he's pleased and he talked about that everton spirit before the game and I think we showed that today and we know all the noise that was up in the round as over these last couple of weeks, the squad's not massive but it's a strong squad, there's lads in there that are young but have had a year to grow last season and we're pretty confident ourselves so there's a lot of noise but internally we're striding to be ambitious and push and not too concerned about that noise on the outside. Yeah, like you say James, a lot of noise from the outside but as someone who's the elder statesman of this team if you like now, what was your reflection looking on those last couple of days of the transfer window when you saw big players exit and perhaps not too much come the other way? Yeah, I mean it's obvious what happened, we missed out on a striker so we know we're short on that department at the minute but people just got a chip in and do a job when they have to. As I just said we had some young players last year who were sort of growing and building and this season they've really kicked on, I think Ty reeks the biggest show of that, he's come back a different player this year, he's exciting, strong, runs with the ball really well creative and he's not the only one that's four or five in there just like that so as I said internally we're ambitious and we're not too concerned about that right now, we've got enough players to go and play as long as we've got 11 to field on the pitch, we're happy to go and as I said tonight we've got a point on the road and we've got a got free for the took on my chances. Tarky just me with the last one, I see you smile when you heard the elder states when they're you say that's me all the time in the dressing room didn't you? As if I'll be on that side hey? I'm in the oldest one which is quite concerned to be honest but I still feel young at heart, that's what they say, young at heart, I'm mixing with the young boys all the time to keep myself feeling young but it's nice it's a bit yeah a bit of being experienced, trying to give a bit of wisdom like I used to do with me and then look after the younger boys and give them a stick when they need it. Do you get to keep going mate listen he's been talking about golf here today, you're much better doing what you're doing mate than the way you're playing so stay at players as long as you can. I'm sticking out I'm sticking out. I'm doing very well in the process James thank you so much for talking to us well thanks guys see you actually. See you mate. It's very sweet the way he talks. Trust me it'll be time so he won't talk to me like that when we played together but he's a great player. Does that back for a need him? Yeah he's one of them that has got that confidence in himself like I said he's one of the oldest statesmen now but you know he's been at the club he knows the club the inside and out club captain now when you know he's taken over from shameless and even when we was there you know that the seniors that were needed at times to dig deep when things weren't going right at the club but you know Tarky day he's fantastic for the older players and the younger players and you know even the staff around the place. And you've been involved I'm sure in so many games like this tonight playing for Everton tight games where one chance if it goes your way then you walk away with the three points never mind what? Yeah of course enough I think they would have come here thinking right listen let's not fly at Tottenham's chances but when we get our chances then you know you you've got to take him and you know it's unfortunate this one here that the Barry header you know I think the goalkeeper turns his head and it just literally hits his head and goes out of play but you know I think the way to Everton grew into it you know I think they could have gone and got a free pitch the one with it. Jews we all you know wherever he sees Barry can slide to the left and then you know just play him in but they were patient here you know you just see him waiting it goes to the left but then goes right quickly he falls the keeper and it's you know it's unfortunate he's very relieved he was there yeah and this is great play here and do you know the pullback you see if you know for me when he's running Johnson get wrong here he's a player of course low on confidence but it's everything you know the way you see the side foot you know he's foot's far too open he's got a score for me he's got a score but like he says when players are low on confidence there without a goal I think that's what it is he's low on confidence he's there's a bad guy who's going around top them that's what it is they want to associate he's going to be disappointed with that after the game it's just a technique he gets it wrong he got to get over the ball cover it and he just leans back and he obviously then balloons out to the right big opportunity for him but they had a couple of really good chances and I think that's what probably David Moise will be saying to the players we've got to be a bit more clinical I think Tyrick George I like I like listening to James Ebb's he was talking about Tyrick George because hasn't always been easy for him when he came in that opportunity is in on of the bench but then he's obviously come back preseason and thoughts just sort of got to come back quick I've got to come back stronger got to come back and really challenge and as I go in probably gives him a bit more of an opportunity to play as well so I thought you did well to that times you know he had the beating of the the right back and actually great times there's a good battle down that side but it's good to see him doing well more everton reaction for you now two more members of the back four Michelin go and Jared Brantwe both with David Craig. Jared Vitale another big everton performance Jared will be spoke before the game we talked about this mentality of this small group back against the wall did we see again what that can achieve with the right attitude and mentality yeah 100% I think you know you look at the game from the start they've came up fast to run the pressure for I would say 15 20 minutes of the first half and you know we dug deep to stay in the game you know putting our body on the line and we grew into the game I thought in the first half towards the end of it and then I think you see it in the second half we've shown that mentality again but also we've had chances to win the game I think as well so yeah I think like I say that bucks the wall mentality he's going to get as long with what he's getting a long way is the partnership between you four at the back two of you are stood here how close and knit a group are you and how much work has gone into that drilling yeah I think you know if you can keep clean sheets you'll go a long way in the league and I think you'll you pick up lots of points and you know as a back for it's not just not just does it's the whole team you know from the wingers the midfielders and strikers all working hard so yeah to team effort Vitaly how good is this group and how much are you enjoying playing in your role in contributing what you are at this moment in time this group a group is so good a few weeks ago I said in interview like this is probably the best group wherever I see in in Everton since I came so I'm happy to play with them and also I'm happy to see Jared back this season and I enjoy to play with him he's going to be very complimentary about you in a moment but how good is the big man being alongside you he's supporting always he always at the back and like I know he will he will tackle the debacle if I lose the ball or lose my winger so thank you so much for help I know you're a bit frustrating he's going to get another award but come on he deserves it yeah he was very very good today I think you know the wingers wings of spurs are very tricky one V1 and I think you know Miko dealt with whoever came on his side all game and you know the quality has defensively and going forward as well it's a massive bonus for us as a team and I think you're seeing that Vitaly obviously we know it's not the biggest group but if you can all keep your fitness how big a surprise could you be in the Premier League this year given that the troubles you're causing one or two teams this year we've spent big money hopefully we'll we'll get your Europe this season with this small group it's it's hard yeah I know about our target it's European European cups Jared you go along with that is that something that's very achievable as I said you know you've got to keep fit we know that it's a long season yeah definitely I think you know last season I wasn't part of the group a lot and I've seen how close we came to to achieving that last season so I think this season it's got to be our aim again like I say it's going to be tough the leagues the leagues lots of for this season teams of bought plenty of players for expensive amounts of money so you know like I said it's that mentality we have to have to go into every game and see what that takes us well we're all going to enjoy watching see how it develops Vitaly well done well done Jared but Jared hand over that trophy you so desperately wanted well done Vitaly you are the player of the man thank you thank you thank you at sky dot UK there you go Alan dot Smith at sky dot UK poor old Alan Smith he works in IT he's going to get hundreds of emails on Monday morning and he's going to have a clue what he's going to be gone but it's one of those isn't it when there's a clean sheet the defenders start sniffing there there might be a player of the match award for someone in that in that defense of course there were I'm glad it's gone to to meco he's such a nice filler it was fantastic today really good serve and prayer but sin hasn't he yeah he really has the fans loving do you know what they can't love them as much as the players because you know you speak to every player that's in that squad at all the staff everybody loves him he comes in does his work goes home loves to go fishing comes back in does his work like he is he's he's fantastic I know you was obviously predominantly a full play but when you went to as a fallback what's it like in a game when the first action you know you've got a problem because Savio for the first two or three times went past him get a bit of opposite movement when he'd be on how then how important is it you just stay calm staying measured in your defending don't get too tight I think you heard when they said about your mentality that's that's where you got to be switched on because obviously you know he's done him a couple times and he's thinking right he's he's gone and got in behind you know he's chopped me he's got a crossing his left foot he's got a crossing his right foot but you know what meco is one of them that you know you you've got to stay aware of what else is he going to do I now need to grow into to the game first 20 minutes you saw what what Tom I'm going to do that was going to be obvious what what they were going to come out talking said it as well that they were going to be on the front foot it's standing the game and staying like I say mentally focused on right he's not going to go past me again like say I was I went to make sure you don't get too tight because Savio's quick yeah like you get to someone tight he's going to knock it in behind he's he's gone so meco he's smart he's clever and he's always that he comes up against the best wingers but he's he's so clever in the way that he goes about his job and I think you see at times when he knows to get tight he'll go out and get tight when he needs to give himself a bit of distance he does that as well and he was brilliant all right are you talking about great servants for everything what about the goalkeeper 100 clean sheets in the Premier League now after that tonight and give us an idea of what it's like actually to play in a back full with Jordan Pickford behind you there he is this is the the fifth Englishman to keep 100 clean sheets in the Premier League I'm hoping he's going to give me a pounder back to give him some of them clean sheets anyway but you know when you when you've got a goalkeeper behind you're you're so confident because he's so loud and seriously he's a goalkeeper that shouts at everyone on the pitch you shout out the fans you see what he's like there's a reason why he's England's number one he's been fantastic for years and years and like I say he's he's a fantastic son for this club but you know like I say you know he's good for his feet he's good for his hands there's so many question marks that have been about picks and he always stands up to him and again and again I don't think anybody can say anything about him 100 clean sheets is phenomenal what do the Everton players think of him that is crazy but he is crazy but everyone knows when he comes into training he's on it you know he's hard to be in training wants to do the right things every day day in day out and you know that's why I think he's England's number one and he will be for as long as he wants to be good ever to actually surprise people then yeah I do think so you know I said before David Moise knows that he's got a small squad but he's worked with small squads before and I think you you see wherever and are now that there's something in the table that if you'd said that at the start of season or when the window shot you're going to be seventh kept two clean sheets they'd be more than happy with that like I say I think that you know they've got to take the the positives out of today obviously getting a draw but be a bit more clinical in front of the goal yeah and go and get them and have the opportunities to say I don't know what we're coming to win not just staying with men behind the ball but I think you're going to be very happy with with a point here they've got a similar problem to maybe what Tottenham have had I know that's not been at this stadium for a long time now but he's still haven't found like a consistent season there being at home and turning that home because I remember you know going to good as him's that fortress it was horrible it was always difficult to play it how important is it to get their home form going that's going that that feels like could be a make a difference for him as well I think that's going to be massive from you know I've seen teams go to hill dicks and stadium and it's it's tough they want to make hill dicks and exactly like what good as some was like I say it was the tough place to go I went there as an opposition and I hate going there it was horrible as long as they've got the fans with them the fans will be backing them as they see people running you know working their heart out for the badge and you know it is a brilliant place that speaks to the boys where they've said you know playing at hill dicks and stadium is brilliant when the fans are with you so I think if they they build on their their home form you know I think away from home they're going to play a lot of men behind a ball and try and play countertacking football especially when they're at home I finally get on the front foot they go out teams and you know when they've got the roar that crowd behind them I think it's going to be difficult for everything that goes there let's talk about spurs now and this this wait for a goal unfortunately goes on for them it's now four games and six hours at the start of this season without scoring but still some way short of the record it's in 2718 by that Crystal Palace side which was under Frank DeBore and then Roy Hodgson came in and managed to have an incredible impact on the team Jamie did you sense I mean James Sarkovsky spoke about it there how tough that opening was yeah did you sense this was when we watched those opening ten minutes that this was going to be the night for spurs yeah well I said it before having I still can't really want to have them hasn't been a goal but I did feel there were they came out really fast which they haven't done in previous games obviously been coached the last couple of weeks because not a midweek game so much and there were a lot of positives I thought look at Savino going in behind the a good bit of opposite movement but can you play the ball across your right foot now he checks back but then you see this sort of thing he takes a touch did it first time there's your opportunity it's wasted and I think a lot of the Tottenham Hotspur players right now are just second guessing themselves Van Hecker plays the ball into them there brilliant shoot shoot instead two three four touches takes too long and I think that was like indicative of what they were playing like today just second guessing themselves Roberson was playing obviously high this is a this is a good block brilliant bright brand right there this one here this was the chance you can see Bergfeld gets it into a position opens his body up tries to bend in that corner and that's what Pickford is in goal four keep saving you three points you sets that out perfectly look he thinks that's going to drift in great goalkeeping there and he just obviously gets himself a put gets his team a point there but that was really probably their one moment there spark but the first 20 minutes I was like yeah that's more like what I want to see but and after that they lose a bit of confidence there was a moment I think it was 50 odd minutes when someone had a shot and all the crowds start going it's not great you know that connection with the fans and the players is not there now I don't know when they're going to get their first home win it might even go on for longer this but I do still see some positives I it cannot stay this way with the players they have in a disposal there are things that I don't like and it's obvious to see down that left-hand side Andy Robertson was your wide left player he was your left-back and your wide left my move wanted to come inside as well and play with Solanki that balance didn't really work so I think you're very lopsided in what you're trying to do obviously if you have mudrick playing out on the left that might be an option he's going to be out for a while so trying to get the best squad and the best team at the moment is what the problem he's has to solve in midfield I think that the balance isn't right up you know we're Bensoncker sitting and then you've got Fernandez and Tanali three similar sorts of players in a way I think somehow you've got to find a way of getting a kudos into the 10 or you've maybe got to get Madison if he gets fit I'm not sure I could have Chesky's going to be but he would be one that I would certainly fit into the team once he gets fit but he's going to be out for a while it seems as well so trying to find the right balance and even as a like we played with we know we know we understand football to a large degree but even I'm looking to thinking how would I change it what how can I get the best out of this team there are at the moment more questions and answers and I'm sure he's in there thinking like he tried everything today every he flipping over that coaching manual non-stop trying to find a way a system to open up and get a goal for Everton he couldn't find it the quality wasn't there but they have got quality players they're not just they're not playing anywhere near as well as well as what they can goal the straw the first ever in the Premier League there but we will hear from Deserby in just a moment on Sky Sports Premier League introducing a Beko state of mind dinners in the oven sweetie dad I need my PE kit washed dried and the Sky Sports Premier League podcast it's time to get more analysis of today's match and head back to the studio the weight goes on for a victory and indeed for a goal at the start of this season nil nil tonight with Everton and the headaches continue for a burto deserving who's giving it oh and the yorns for the fans as well he's giving his reaction to David Craig Roberto this is a tough moment for you for the players for the supporters for the club but how do you assess oh it's not a tough moment they stop at you because not a tough moment tough moment was last season in sanderland last season when we we were like eating now is is not normal moment but is one of the moment in football when you rebuild the team when you start late because we started together with marmouche with Savio with Solanki with a medicine last two first day ago and now we have the I think we played very well the first 30 minutes and then we lost maybe energy because our physical condition is not the best and we are working for that we didn't shoot for the quality of the play we showed we have to shoot more times in goals we came we went inside of the gallery of Everton 74 times but but we didn't create the chance the normal chance the chance enough to explain the quality of the play we did we have to work for sure we have to analyze the last decision because we we made too many wrong decision but I think we played well a lot of things to pick out from what you've said there let's start with what you're talking about about the physical condition of the players is this because you've not had the opportunity to work with a lot of them like you say coming in or other other issues you're having to deal with it because after they work up with many players involved in work up is like this because we suffered two free injuries Mateusz Fernández Miki van de Ven in Australia and they couldn't work and other injuries Solanki but I'm not positive I'm not negative I realistic and I think if you play like this 30 minutes it's because you you you are capable to play football we have to extend that 30 minutes in 60 65 70 80 and 90 and then we have to stay focused more focused on the last 25 meters and because today we would have won now we we would speak about a different completely different game first you it's the first time this club has started a season and gone four games without scoring a goal you've invested very heavily in attacking talents some that while you've been here some that was brought here before you were here how frustrating is it when you look at the names in your squad within six hours of football you've yet to score a Premier League? I'm not journalist I don't write in the social media I just coach and I have to analyze the performances I have to analyze the qualities of my player and then I have to analyze the potential situation where we could shoot where we could score where we could make better decisions you've used the word courage a lot lately in your in your price comments are your strikers needing to have more courage more belief shoot on side I forgot to say one thing's important I think the first 30 minutes were very very but we didn't find the goal and I think in that moment we we suffer we we suffer too much as a confidence in ourselves and this is another important part for us in this moment also in the second dive in many parts of the second dive I I observe it my players little bit with less confidence and they don't like for this because they have to not to be happy because we didn't win we didn't score but happy to understand and to believe that we are in the in the right way what do you put that lack of confidence down to because you by nature are always very positive and from the front and lead from the front why is it the players can't follow what you show yes because the players are human and they they have sensitive they have emotions and they think with their head normal with my head my my my position is to help them to to stay focused on the improvement we have to do because if we play 90 minutes like the first 30 the first 30 minutes I think we're going to win many games are you seeing something different on the training ground week to week than you're seeing out here no no today I was I I saw right players especially in the first 30 minutes and just finally obviously it's never nice for managers coaches players to hear booing at the end of a game at any time what do you say to those fans who were showing that frustration this early in the season sorry for the fans we are sorry for the fans they they were fantastic today especially in the first part of the game because when they when they when they see the team is playing well is pushing is tried to find the solution to score they they were inside of the pitcher with my players and then it's normal no the reaction of the fans is normal we have to say thanks all time and this will change what change you believe this this run that your own will change your confident that it will change my confidence yeah I already said I'm realistic and non-negative and no positive thank you Roberto appreciate you as always yeah it's difficult a lot of questions will come Roberto deserving's way the first time ever that Spurs have failed to score in the first four games of a new season Jamie sort of talked about some of the possibilities of trying to think about how this might resolve itself he's not looking for scapegoats at this stage but what do you make of his explanation for for where we're at I thought he was talking about you know players are not fit enough you know they've just come out of four five six weeks of pretty season that's where you you build up your fitness to go into a season okay my moves come late Savio come late as well but you know there's other players there he mentioned Dominic Selanki Selanki has been at the club for years now so I've done in which way he's going of course he's the manager wants to take the players and I think that as players you've got to think to yourself we're not doing enough it's that simple that I don't think the players are doing enough I don't think they're they're threatening to even look like they're going to score I kind of created chances first 20 minutes of course like does Erwin said they look like there was a threat but then that just goes so it is I think there's a lack of confidence all throughout the whole team and that's got to come back straight away they've got games coming up where they're going to be tough everything now for Tottenham whatever game it is they're going in to a game that's going to be extremely tough and you know they've got to start you know threatening you know making a ball get into the striker's feet and getting runners around getting runners in behind it they didn't look like they was going to score to the having made all these signings and plenty and forward positions as well Jamie they decided well I guess they thought that Richellerson was going to leave he was the only player of this list of supposed current attacking options who managed to get double figures whether for Spurs or for their previous clubs last season were they hasty in making the decision that he would not be part of the Premier League squad who Richellerson yes no no I don't think so for me he's he's had his time at Tottenham he wanted to leave now what we don't we're not privy to them he's still there he's still that's what I'm saying but he wanted to leave he didn't want to be there and the manager's probably thinking right now only players that want to play want to be around the squad so I don't look at that as a as a as a bad mistake well I think did surprise me actually got 11 goals last year because he didn't feel like he had 11 goals season but he's never going to be prolific they've got other players there I still think they're one or two players short because didn't have spent as much money they have the balance of the squad isn't quite right you know my move didn't play a lot of football last year you know it's very difficult for me you're you're you're playing up against Harlan Harlan's obviously a better player than what he is you know Matthias for that there's not a lot of goals in him he didn't go to the World Cup imagine a lured into the fact the players go into the World Cup he didn't go to now he didn't go to the World Cup so these players should relatively be fit so now I didn't score for Newcastle last season so if you're looking at midfield as an area that might be a problem as well so I asked the same question now I've been watching another 90 minutes another 90 minutes of evidence who's going to get the goals for spurs this season well you've got a real happy reliant on people as like Marmouche you've got to look at him as a goal as a nine or playing off the side I mean he played he had one year in Germany as a nine which was obviously prolific at Frankfurt was he I'd track Frankfurt I think it was then he went and had a good season then he goes to Man City and he looked really good in his first season but Pep sort of thought fell out of love of him whatever whatever reason which is understandable because of the options that they've got is he an out and out fox in the box is he like a vanist or was he one of those players are going to be getting scruffy goals no you know it feels like his best goals are always from distance because he's a wonderful striker of a ball so they haven't perhaps really got that side of it right you know I don't really look at Kudas as an out and out goal scorer he's a creator you know he can jink in and out you know Madison maybe but they haven't really got that out and out goal scorer because I look at Solanki you know 15 appearances last year as an injury he's your focal point he's your number nine that is those numbers are not good enough in this day and age and if you're looking at other strikers at smaller clubs getting a lot more goals than that so that is a there they have to fix the only positive one of the positives I will say is clean sheets because the last few games I did a new castle game when they were really poor at the back I thought and I was very critical on a Mickey van de Venne of what he was excellent today and that partnership at the back looked a lot better than what it has previously so they are the positives and if you can keep clean sheets you know inevitably you will score goals I do believe they've got enough quality to score goals it will have they can't keep not scoring goals is just not going to happen but next week they go Liverpool midweek then they've got Aston Villa at home we were obviously in transition themselves they've got to find a way with that group hash to get goals let's have a look at those those games that they have got coming up do you think that Liverpool one is it is a big game yeah definitely now I think that you know when you you haven't been scoring goals you go into that competition you're like this this is a chance to to get through into another round that competition but also for players to get confidence to go and you know get them plans go and get them goals get assists to then build on that for the next few fixtures that you've got coming up you got Aston Villa at home again you got you know it away a villa desperate for the points given Esther which is which is going to be another tough game I don't see an easy game to be honest for no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no
