The INEOS midfield recruitment strategy is lopsided
Manchester United have already secured Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, yet the engine room remains the primary focus of their business this summer. Recent reports confirm United are tracking Sander Berge as a third addition to that specific zone.
Bringing in three distinct profiles for the center of the park suggests a lack of a cohesive tactical blueprint. Tielemans provides technical progression, but Berge is a defensive-minded pivot whose arrival would complicate the hierarchy of Kobbie Mainoo and the newly signed Santos.
The squad balance is starting to tilt
Spending up to 45 million pounds on a new World Cup star while leaving other departments threadbare is a dangerous gamble. While United look to bolster their ranks, the club needs to be careful with their remaining budget allocation. Hoarding depth in midfield does not fix a lack of defensive transitions or a clear lack of lethal output in the final third.
Meanwhile, other clubs are being much more surgical. Chelseaโs interest in squad turnover, specifically the recent rumors regarding a potential replacement for Alejandro Garnacho, shows a commitment to retooling their attack rather than over-saturating the middle of the pitch. As noted in recent reports, Chelsea are aiming for a 40 million pound pivot that aligns with a specific stylistic transition.
Why the Berge approach will likely backfire
Trying to deploy Tielemans, Santos, and potentially Berge creates a bottleneck. If all three are on the wage bill, only one or two can realistically start in a double-pivot system. This is poor resource management for a team that historically struggles with high-value contracts on underutilized players.
The defensive metrics for Berge are fine on paper, but he lacks the line-breaking passing range required to elevate a United side that is often stuck in a low-tempo recycle cycle. His arrival would signal that INEOS is prioritizing quantity over the necessary high-ceiling profiles that win titles. United will likely secure a move here, but they will regret the redundancy by the time the winter window opens.
