Killian Phillips shows why Craig McLeish's St Mirren will refuse to go quietly

The Falkirk trap that failed to spring

Opening day in the Scottish Premiership is rarely a canvas for tactical masterpieces, but St Mirren’s 2-0 victory at Falkirk Stadium provided an immediate look into Craig McLeish’s recalibrated side. Bookmakers had tipped Saints as prime candidates for the drop after surviving last season’s drop zone via a nerve-shredding play-off against Partick. Yet McLeish’s men looked far more refined than relegation fodder, controlling space and breaking with clinical speed.

Falkirk boss John McGlynn entered the match needing to offset the departures of Dylan Tait, Calvin Miller, and Barney Stewart, while also navigating captain Brad Spencer’s suspension. The Bairns tried to set an early tempo, creating their best opening in the 5th minute when Ethan Laidlaw’s clever turn and pass found Jack McMillan for a half-volley. But once St Mirren settled their mid-block, Falkirk’s central midfield struggled to disrupt Saints' buildup phase.

Killian Phillips operates in the half-spaces

The defining feature of McLeish’s tactics is a shift toward a more deliberate passing game than predecessor Stephen Robinson employed. With defender Samuel Ramos dictating play from deep, St Mirren repeatedly bypassed Falkirk's first line of engagement. Ramos nearly unlocked the host defense after 9 minutes with a long diagonal to Killian Phillips, forcing Scott Bain into his first save of the afternoon.

Saints broke the deadlock in the 11th minute through a beautifully executed wide combination. Ramos picked out Chris Mochrie between the lines, who promptly fed Henry Fieldson charging down the left flank. Fieldson’s first-time delivery into the near post caught Deniss Melniks flat-footed, allowing Phillips to dart in front and divert a close-range finish past Bain. It was a textbook exploitation of Falkirk’s static defensive line.

Wastefulness and VAR drama in the second half

Despite their tactical control, St Mirren almost paid for a glaring lack of composure in front of goal. Eseosa Sule was presented with two high-grade chances early in the second half. Fieldson fizzed another low cross across the six-yard box that Sule failed to convert, before the 20-year-old forward was gifted a clean look from a misplaced Melniks pass. Bain denied Sule, and Phillips could not turn in the rebound, leaving the visitors clinging to a slender lead before Sule was withdrawn in the 62nd minute.

That inefficiency nearly proved fatal when Falkirk substitute Ben Parkinson bundled the ball into the net with his first touch in the 71st minute following a Ryan Strain set-piece. However, referee Duncan Nicholson was called to the VAR monitor, revealing that Melniks had knocked the ball down with his arm. The goal was rightly chalked off, sparing Saints from an unearned collapse.

Sealing the points on the counter

Falkirk pushed men forward in search of an equalizer, leaving vast expanses of space in their transition defense. St Mirren exploited this vulnerability in the 87th minute when substitute Roland Idowu led a swift counter-attack down the right corridor. Idowu released the unwearied Phillips, whose low drive deflected off Leon McCann and trickled past Bain into the bottom corner.

St Mirren still have clear operational flaws — Sule’s finishing must sharpen, and their late-game defensive line dropped alarmingly deep under pressure. Yet this performance showed a team with clear structural identity, press-resistant midfield mechanics, and a match-winner in Phillips who understands space. If McLeish continues to refine this system, St Mirren will make a mockery of those pre-season relegation odds.
