Premier League season preview: Hull City to Tottenham – Football Weekly

1. Executive Overview: Core Theses & Key Revelations

The annual Premier League preview edition of Guardian Football Weekly serves as far more than mere seasonal forecasting; it acts as an essential diagnostic bellwether for the structural, economic, and tactical shifts reshaping global football. In this milestone episode, the panel—comprising Jordan Jarrett Bryan, Barry Glendending, and Nicky Bandini—unpacks an English football landscape defined by financial compression, managerial turnover, and unprecedented squad volatility. Across an expansive discussion spanning Manchester City’s squad turnover to Hull City’s mathematical anomalies, the conversation establishes several core theses that will dictate the competitive geometry of the upcoming campaign.

Chief among these revelations is the profound sense of fragility surrounding established elite clubs. Manchester City, long regarded as an immutable tactical monolith, faces a structural identity crisis following the high-stakes departure of Rodri—a move Jordan Jarrett Bryan bluntly characterizes as "absolute insanity." Combined with an alarming Community Shield display that exposed systemic off-ball vulnerabilities, City’s projected dominance no longer appears absolute. This instability at the summit is compounded by individual performance regressions, epitomized by Jarrett Bryan’s controversial thesis that Phil Foden’s development curve exhibits "Dele Alli vibes," having plateaued four seasons after his initial competitive peak.

Concurrently, Liverpool stands at a pivotal tactical crossroads. The transition to Andoni Iraola heralds an aggressive move away from what Glendending categorizes as last season's "slow, ponderous side-to-side" possession phase toward a high-intensity, vertical transition model. However, as Bandini highlights, this ideological shift is severely threatened by unaddressed depth deficits across the defensive line, particularly at full-back, alongside the historical precedent of Iraola’s slow onboarding cycles at previous clubs.

At the bottom of the table, the panel identifies severe statistical anomalies among the promoted cohort. Hull City enters the top flight burdened by an extreme disparity between results and underlying metrics, having posted a +19.9 expected points (xPTS) overperformance while logging the fourth-worst expected goals against (xGA) record in the Championship. Conversely, Ipswich Town presents a calculated gamble: following Kieran McKenna’s departure, Gary O'Neil inherits a heavily remodeled squad backed by significant expenditure, setting up a high-stakes test of pragmatism versus momentum.

Finally, the episode highlights how continental schedule burdens create asymmetric domestic opportunities. Leeds United, bolstered by significant recruitment under Daniel Farke, benefits from complete calendar purity. Unburdened by European mid-week travel, Leeds is positioned to exploit the physical and tactical fatigue of established mid-table rivals competing across multiple fronts.

2. Context & Background: The Landscape Leading to This Conversation

Understanding the weight of the panel’s observations requires examining the broader macroeconomic and tactical environment of modern elite football. The current era is defined by the strict enforcement of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which has fundamentally altered squad building across the English football pyramid. High-spending clubs are no longer capable of hoarding multi-layered squad depth without offloading key assets, creating unprecedented roster churn and sudden structural vulnerabilities even within elite institutions.

Tactically, the Premier League is undergoing a widespread departure from low-tempo, sterile possession models. For nearly a decade, positional play (Juego de Posición) emphasized controlled build-up and extreme risk aversion during the first two phases of play. Today, the competitive meta has shifted aggressively toward dynamic pressing, rapid verticality, and explosive transitional moments. Clubs failing to adapt their physical profiles to this high-volume pressing paradigm risk functional obsolescence, regardless of their historical stature or financial footprint.

This tactical transition is further complicated by managerial movement across the league. The departures of transformative figures like Kieran McKenna from Ipswich Town and the arrival of tactical ideologues like Andoni Iraola at Liverpool and Gary O'Neil at Portman Road present major execution risks. Tactical re-engineering requires extensive training ground micro-cycles—a luxury rarely afforded in an era of expanding match calendars and international demands.

Within this environment, the Football Weekly panel provides a critical bridge between statistical analytics and institutional reality. By juxtaposing underlying metrics like expected goals (xG) and expected points (xPTS) against dressing room dynamics and recruitment strategy, the conversation offers a granular look into how clubs are navigating this turbulent landscape.

3. Deep-Dive Thematic Breakdown

3.1 The Manchester City Paradigm Shift: Rodri’s Exit, Foden’s Trajectory, and Community Shield Alarm Bells

The structural equilibrium of Manchester City dominated the top-of-the-table analysis, centering on the seismic ramifications of Rodri’s departure. Jordan Jarrett Bryan’s assertion that the sale represents "absolute insanity" reflects a deep analytical truth: elite single-pivot midfielders who combine press-resistance, elite defensive coverage, and aerial superiority are virtually irreplaceable in modern football. Over recent seasons, City’s expected goals against (xGA) without Rodri anchoring the central midfield zone spiked significantly, exposing their rest-defense structure to rapid central counter-attacks.

Without Rodri’s central commanding presence, City’s ability to sustain suffocating counter-pressing in the opposition half degrades. Rodri's unique profile allowed City to operate with advanced interiors high up the pitch, confident that any clearance would be swept up by his exceptional anticipatory positioning. The loss forces the coaching staff to either adopt a double-pivot structure—which sacrifices an advanced attacking interior—or rely on auxiliary defenders inverting into midfield spaces, thereby compromising lateral defensive coverage. Jarrett Bryan’s emphasis that City management should have been "begging him... give us one more year" underscores the extreme scarcity of tier-one defensive midfielders capable of operating as a solo pivot in a dominant possession scheme.

This central midfield vulnerability was vividly demonstrated in the Community Shield, prompting Barry Glendending’s blunt admission of alarm. While mainstream consensus often dismisses the season curtain-raiser as a glorified friendly, tactical analysts view it as a high-fidelity diagnostic tool. Glendending highlighted an overt breakdown in City's off-ball intensity and mid-block compactness. When an opponent easily bypasses City’s first pressing line, their central defenders are forced into desperate backpedaling actions across vast open spaces—a flaw that was starkly evident during their pre-season outing, where third-man runs penetrated their central core with alarming regularity.

Equally provocative was Jarrett Bryan’s evaluation of Phil Foden’s career trajectory, comparing his recent development curve to that of Dele Alli. Jarrett Bryan observed that "it's been four seasons since he was at his peak, and people forget that form goes really quickly." From an analytical standpoint, this assessment challenges the narrative of linear player progression. While Foden possesses exceptional technical quality, his underlying output metrics—specifically key passes per 90, progressive dribbles, and open-play shot creation—have exhibited periods of stagnation when shifted across multiple roles. The comparison to Dele Alli serves as a stark warning about the fragility of elite performance when positional stability, physical sharpness, or tactical clarity deteriorate across consecutive seasons.

3.2 Liverpool’s Structural Transmutation: Iraola’s High-Intensity Press vs. Squad Depth Fragility

Liverpool’s upcoming campaign represents one of the most radical tactical experiments in recent Premier League history. Barry Glendending’s critique of last season’s football as "slow, ponderous side-to-side" captures the growing tactical fatigue surrounding their previous possession mechanics. The system, while effective at securing territorial control and high passing accuracy, frequently degenerated into predictable U-shaped passing patterns around low blocks, draining matches of tempo and leaving fans visibly frustrated.

The appointment of Andoni Iraola promises an aggressive tactical overhaul. Iraola’s tactical methodology relies on extreme verticality, high-volume counter-pressing, and immediate penalty-area entry upon winning possession. His teams systematically trigger pressing triggers in the opposition half, measuring success through passes allowed per defensive action (PPDA) and high turnover rates. However, Glendending raised a critical historical caveat: during Iraola’s initial stint at Bournemouth, his side failed to secure a victory in their first ten matches as the squad struggled to absorb complex physical and positional demands. At a club like Liverpool, where drop-offs in early-season points yields can permanently derail title ambitions, such an extended tactical adoption curve "won't be tolerated."

Compounding this tactical friction is Liverpool’s squad balance, which Nicky Bandini audited with sharp scrutiny. Bandini noted that the roster has failed to address evident vulnerabilities, particularly at full-back, where depth and positional stability remain major concerns. Under Iraola’s system, full-backs are subjected to immense physical stress, required to sprint expansive vertical corridors to provide width while immediately tucking inside during defensive transitions. Entering a multi-competition campaign without elite, resilient depth in these lateral channels creates a single point of failure that could destabilize the entire defensive architecture during winter fixture congestions.

3.3 The Promoted Anomaly: Hull City’s xG Defiance vs. Ipswich Town’s Calculated Gamble

At the lower end of the table, the panel examined the stark divergence in survival strategies among promoted clubs. Hull City presents one of the most profound statistical paradoxes in recent Championship history. Barry Glendending established direct parallels to Sunderland’s previous campaign, noting that Hull achieved promotion despite conceding the fourth-highest expected goals against (xGA) in the division and running an astounding +19.9 expected points (xPTS) overperformance.

Under manager Sergej Jakirović, Hull showcased remarkable tactical pragmatism—such as shifting from a 4-2-3-1 to a flexible back-three during the playoff semi-final against Millwall to disrupt their opponent's build-up mechanics. To bolster the squad, Hull engaged in aggressive transfer window activity, signing Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano, Constantinos Salakis from Olympiacos, Lucas Harrington from Colorado, Jens Kretto Dahl from Tromsø, Joe Gelhardt from Leeds, Lucas Garner-Douth from Salzburg, Elliott Stroud from Mjällby, Hidemassa Morita from Sporting CP, alongside Ben Targett and Jack Butland. However, relying on massive squad turnover alongside finishing luck is unsustainable in the Premier League. The goalscoring burden falls squarely on Oli McBurnie (who registered 19 goals in the Championship) and Joe Gelhardt. If Hull’s defensive structure continues to yield high-quality chances, no amount of individual overperformance will prevent swift mathematical regression toward the relegation zone.

In contrast, Ipswich Town represents a deliberate, high-expenditure restructuring effort. Following Kieran McKenna’s departure, the club appointed Gary O'Neil—a manager known for pragmatism and organizational discipline in high-pressure relegation fights. The club’s recruitment drive has been aggressive, bringing in technical talent such as Julio Enciso, Emerson, Abdul Fatawu, Florentino, Daichi Maeda, Isa Diop, Kjell Scherpen, Kanye Van With Veilin, and Sasalukic.

Nicky Bandini highlighted the psychological and structural case for Ipswich’s survival, pointing out that their momentum and targeted investment set them apart from traditional promoted sides. However, the squad also features players carrying historical relegation patterns—such as Darragh Lenihan, Abdul Fatawu, and Dara O'Shea—requiring O'Neil to rapidly mold a cohesive defensive unit from a group of newly assembled assets before early-season fixture difficulty undermines team morale.

3.4 Continental Distractions vs. Domestic Purity: Leeds United’s Schedule Advantage

Leeds United’s outlook under Daniel Farke highlighted the critical relationship between squad depth, recruitment quality, and match calendar density. Leeds executed a commanding summer transfer strategy, securing high-profile additions including James Trafford (£40m), Tarik Muharemovic, Nico Elvedi, and Harry Wilson to establish a robust Premier League core.

Jordan Jarrett Bryan articulated a compelling macro-thesis regarding Leeds’ competitive advantage: while direct rivals in the middle tier of the league are burdened by expanded European group stage fixtures, Leeds enjoys complete calendar purity. Competing in a single domestic fixture per week allows Farke to maintain optimal physical freshness, execute comprehensive tactical preparation, and minimize soft-tissue injuries. For a player like Harry Wilson, this structured environment provides the ideal platform to deliver a career-best statistical season in expected goal involvement (xGI), positioning Leeds to comfortably distance themselves from the bottom six.

4. Speaker Perspectives & Analytical Contrast

The strength of Guardian Football Weekly lies in the sharp analytical contrast between its regular panelists. Each contributor approaches squad evaluation, tactical forecasting, and institutional health through a distinct lens, producing a dynamic debate across the episode.

Barry Glendending operates as the panel’s institutional skeptic and historical pragmatist. Unmoved by pre-season optimism or superficial recruitment headlines, Glendending zeroes in on structural red flags and historical precedents. His alarm regarding Manchester City’s Community Shield performance and his empirical breakdown of Hull City’s xG overperformance demonstrate an analytical framework rooted in risk identification and statistical reality. Glendending’s role is to challenge soft consensus and highlight how quickly operational flaws manifest on the pitch when teams step up to top-flight opposition.

Jordan Jarrett Bryan provides high-conviction macro-critique, often delivering bold, iconoclastic declarations that reframe standard media narratives. His passionate condemnation of the Rodri sale as "absolute insanity," his uncompromising assessment of Phil Foden’s four-year output plateau, and his strategic forecasting of Leeds United’s calendar advantage reflect an analytical approach focused on high-level roster management and individual performance trajectories. Jarrett Bryan prioritizes decisive structural factors over comforting footballing tropes.

Nicky Bandini brings a rigorous squad audit methodology to the table. Bandini evaluates teams through roster balance, positional depth ratios, and tactical versatility. Her analysis of Liverpool’s full-back vulnerability under Iraola and her detailed evaluation of Ipswich Town’s summer acquisitions demonstrate a meticulous focus on how tactical systems interface with squad construction. Bandini bridges the gap between coaching philosophy and recruitment execution.

Panelist Primary Analytical Lens Key Tactical/Strategic Focus Risk Assessment Methodology
Barry Glendending Historical Pragmatism & Empirical Risk Off-ball intensity, xG/xPTS anomalies, defensive compacting Identifies structural red flags, pre-season warning signs, and historical adoption curves
Jordan Jarrett Bryan Macro-Roster Critique & Conviction Analysis Single-pivot value, career output arcs, calendar load advantages Evaluates high-level squad construction decisions and individual performance plateaus
Nicky Bandini Positional Audit & Systemic Compatibility Full-back depth, tactical transition friction, recruitment cohesion Analyzes positional depth ratios and squad stability under high-stress tactical schemes

The friction between these methodologies was particularly visible during the discussion on Ipswich Town and Hull City. While Glendending dismissed Hull based on cold underlying metrics, Jarrett Bryan and Bandini explored how managerial adaptability (such as Jakirović’s tactical shifts) and high-spending recruitment (in Ipswich’s case) might defy purely historical expectations. This multi-layered debate ensures that complex tactical transitions are examined from every operational angle.

5. Strategic & Industry Implications

The analytical threads unraveled during the podcast episode extend far beyond individual club predictions; they reflect systemic shifts transforming the broader football industry. As the Premier League continues to expand its financial dominance over global football, the strategic execution required to maintain elite status has become unforgivingly narrow.

First, the enforcement of PSR and financial sustainability frameworks is fundamentally altering how elite clubs manage roster attrition. Manchester City’s willingness to part with Rodri highlights a growing industry reality: even multi-state-backed institutions must carefully balance wage structures and asset sales. However, as Jarrett Bryan noted, sacrificing tier-one positional specialists in the name of roster churn introduces profound operational risk. Moving forward, clubs will be forced to develop superior internal replacement pipelines or face immediate structural degradation when marquee players depart.

Second, the tactical convergence around high-intensity verticality is redefining player valuation profiles. Liverpool’s pivot under Andoni Iraola reflects a league-wide recognition that slow, low-tempo possession no longer yields consistent high-value chances against well-drilled mid-blocks. As a result, market valuation for press-resistant midfielders, ball-carrying full-backs, and high-volume sprinters has skyrocketed. Clubs that fail to align their recruitment pipelines with these physical demands risk spending heavily on incompatible talent—a trap Ipswich Town has actively tried to avoid through their targeted summer window.

Third, the expanding international fixture calendar is creating a sharp divide between European competitors and domestically focused clubs. As Leeds United’s outlook demonstrates, unburdened micro-cycles allow mid-table clubs to optimize physical preparation and tactical consistency. Over an 11-month campaign, this physical advantage can bridge significant financial gaps, allowing disciplined single-competition teams to outperform bloated, European-burdened squads in the domestic standings.

6. Looking Ahead: Unresolved Questions & Next Milestones

As the campaign unfolds, analysts and club executives must monitor several quantitative and qualitative benchmarks to evaluate the accuracy of the panel’s diagnoses. The early weeks of the season will quickly reveal whether these structural anxieties materialize into on-pitch crises or dissolve under successful managerial adaptation.

The primary diagnostic focal points over Matchdays 1 through 10 include:

  • Manchester City’s Central Rest-Defense: Tracking City’s expected goals conceded per shot (xG/shot) and central transition counter-attacks conceded following Rodri’s exit. Can a double-pivot or inverted full-back system restore mid-block stability?
  • Phil Foden’s Metric Output: Monitoring Foden’s open-play shot creation, expected assists (xA), and progressive carry frequency to determine whether his development curve is rebounding or validating Jarrett Bryan’s plateau thesis.
  • Liverpool’s Early Points Yield Under Iraola: Auditing Liverpool’s points-per-game return across the opening ten matches. Will Iraola experience a turbulent onboarding phase similar to his Bournemouth tenure, or can individual quality mask initial tactical friction?
  • Hull City’s Defensive Regression Rate: Observing Hull’s xGA metrics under Sergej Jakirović. Will their underlying defensive vulnerabilities lead to rapid mathematical regression, or can McBurnie and Gelhardt sustain an anomalous finishing efficiency?
  • Ipswich Town’s Defensive Cohesion: Measuring the integration speed of Gary O'Neil’s remodeled squad, particularly observing whether their high-profile recruitment can overcome historical relegation dynamics among key defenders.
  • Leeds United’s Domestic Point Efficiency: Tracking Leeds’ points-per-match yield against opponents engaged in European midweek competition, testing the hypothesis that calendar purity drives domestic overperformance.

In summary, the upcoming Premier League season promises to be one of the most volatile and analytically captivating in recent memory. From the structural recalculations at Manchester City to the tactical experiment at Anfield and the mathematical survival battles at the bottom, the insights articulated on Guardian Football Weekly provide the definitive roadmap for understanding the tactical and operational battles ahead.

This is the Guardian. Hello and welcome to Guardian Football Weekly, Premierly Preview Part 2. We begin with Whole City. They've signed a lot of players. Have an interesting manager in Sergey Gakirovich, but we'll do well to stop anyone putting them rock bottom. Maybe to switch to have no Kira McKenna, so bring in Gary O'Neal, who is sometimes really good at managing a side near at the foot of the table. Leads were great for the second half of last season, can Daniel Farca push on, and then Liverpool, one of the sides who could push for the title, Iriole is a famously slow starter, and they've lost a lot of experience in the summer. All of our Manchester City predictions have plummeted after the community shield. Following Pep is so, so, so, so hard. How will Enzo Moresco do? Meanwhile, the difficult first bull season for Michael Carricka, Old Trafford. Newcastle have sold all their players and any house gone. Forest have Glazner, him and Marinacke sounds like fun. Sunderland surprised us all last year. Can they go again? And Spurs had the chance to finish 17th for the third season running. I mean, who knows? This is the Guardian Football Weekly. On the panel today, Jordan Jarrett Bryan, welcome. Hello, mate. Hello, Nikki Bandini. Morning. And welcome, Barry Glendending. Hello. And I think that intro got all the teams in the right places, Barry, compared to the first half of the... Couldn't have been worse than yesterday. Absolutely right. We are recording on a Tuesday, in case there's some dramatic news between now and when this comes out on a Thursday. We begin with Hull City. So managed by Sergo, Yokeeravitch, they bought in a bucket load of players. Nobel Mendy from Varicano, Constantinos Salakis, from Olympiacos, Lucas Harrington, very highly rated Aussie, from Colorado, Jens, Kretto Dahl, from Tromzzo, Joe Gellhart, finally someone I've heard of, from Leeds, Lucas Garner Douth, from Salzburg, Elliott Stroud, from Malby, Hidemassa Morita, from Sporting Leeds, Ben Matt Target, and Jack Buttlander in, they've let 2-4-6-8 go as well. They begin at home to Manchester United, then they go to Coventry, home to Villa, away to Chelsea, away to Newcastle, then when the playoffs last year after finishing sixth in the championship, Barry. I've gotten big sondalum vibes off Hull this season. It's a manager, I think a lot of, most people outside of Hull don't know a huge amount about. They've signed an awful lot of players. I haven't heard of quite a few of them. Joe Gellhart was with them last season, on loan from Leeds. That's been made permanent. Look, Hull are weird in that. Most people expected them to get relegated from the championship last season. They conceded the fourth, highest number of goals in the championship's last season. The XG, against, I think, would have had them relegated last season. And this somehow got promoted. Make it make sense. So they're in the Premier League now, and I think like sondalum last season, everyone is expecting them to go straight back down. Sondalum has showed what can be done with astute signings in the transfer market, because very few of the players that got sondalum up contributed to their cause last season. And it looks like Hull might be trying a similar approach, whether it'll work or not. I don't think it will, but I'm not going to write them off after what sondalum did last season. I think much will hinge on whether Ali McBernie and Joe Gellhardt can score goals in the Premier League. I think they might struggle. But McBernie got 19 last season. I think that's brilliant effort. He was a free transfer. They also played most last season. I think under a transfer of Bimbara they couldn't spend any money on players. So just for them to bring in the Premier League is just, it's almost incredible. I don't think they'll stay in it. But I hope they prove... I'd love if they proved me wrong. Well, they had to sell players in June. Didn't they just avoid a points penalty? So they've already won. They already got six points in the bag. They might not have had. But it's really hard to predict with a team like this. I think Baza's made very eloquently the case of why most people looking at them and thinking they're doomed. It was like 19.9 points more than their expected points was the number I saw throw around if we want to go into the XG and the XG goes against. You just have these things that happen in football stories that happen that sometimes feel like magic but actually come down to things like good management and you're Caravitch. I think it was the playoff semi-final against Mill and he swapped from a 4-2-3-1 to playing back-3 and wing backs. And that just really, like, threw Mill all off their game. So he's obviously a county manager. He knows what he's doing. Baza's already mentioned that Bernie who has banged them in the championship. I think he said two goes before and the top flight and scored six each time, which obviously isn't a great return. But I'm always the one who bangs on about players careers aren't static. You reach different points in your career. You have different levels of confidence. You're more certain of your game. So you never know. But I think on paper, it's hard to make the case that this is not a team that's going to struggle a lot in the top flight. Yeah, I don't get something in vibes about Hall of Talk. I find it very difficult to put an argument as to why they could stay in the Premier League this season. Like Nikki said, looking through their squad, a lot of the players that have been the Premier League before weren't good enough then. And this is two, three, four, five years ago. So I fear for some of those players in the squads now. I did speak to one of my friends over last night in doing a bit of research on Hall. It wasn't feel proud. It wasn't feel proud. But it was a friend of mine whose dad is a massive whole family. Okay. And he's talking of sign. I checked to the signs. This young defender is Australian. Yeah, Herrington. Yeah. Who's very young, but they're very excited about what he could become. How much he plays this season? We don't know. But it could be a thing of in two, three years. He's a world card, a good one as well. And everyone in Australian football is so excited about him. And I don't know if that's because there aren't any good. It gets underbought. May I ask Australian football is at the moment? Or he genuinely is the absolute real deal. But yeah, he's like a, you know, sort of language cultured centre back. And he could be great. Remember the name. Yeah. I think he says so much about this. Unfortunately about the demographic we have on our panel that we've immediately used mentioned Phil Brown. It's the first thing I think we'll have to wait for very little. Of course. It's Phil Brown on Boxing Day. He's sat with all of his players out. And it's really unfair because they've had a whole time in the Premier League since then. Yeah, I have them 19th. And I mainly put them there because I knew everyone else would put them 20th. But where have you put them buried? Correct. Nicky. 20th. 20th. It was his town then. I managed my Gary O'Neill after Kira McKenna left. They brought in Julia and Ciso. Emerson, Abdul Fatalu. Florentino. My aid has come in from Celtics. That's a Luke Hitch. And ESAD have come in from Fulham. Kels Sherpen is a keeper who's coming from Union, so I'm sure it was. And another keeper they brought in from FC Vollandam called Kanye Van With Veilin. They haven't lost that many semi-Shamish modics with Burns and Harry Clarke have gone. They begin at home to Sunland and then go to Old Trafford. Home to Liverpool. A way to Palace. A way to Everton. They came second in the championship last year. I think Neil Nicky is sort of strange. I think he's sort of harshly treated. Because he's sort of quite dour, you know. And he's not Gary O'Neillio. Perhaps we don't, like, nobody goes, oh my god, it's Gary O'Neill. But actually, it might be a Kanye appointment. Yes, it's a really tough gig to follow, isn't it? Kira McKenna obviously has brought them up twice, having brought them up from lead one, and who has so much good will with the fans. I feel like anyone who comes into that is going to have a hard time. And probably having the, I don't know, for one to better way of putting it, the straight man coming in the best, you can do at that point have someone who's just going to be no nonsense about it and get on with the job. And it's obviously meaningless until they start playing games and you see what's actually happening. But he's projecting that level of confidence, I feel like at the moment, that makes me feel like he at least thinks that this big investment they've done, bringing in this backbone of players with ESA Dupand and Luke Hitch and Florentino has helped them and that they might actually be able to do something with that. And I don't know, I've been trying, I think part of this is I've been trying to convince myself, because it's more interesting, that one of these newly promoted teams has to stay up. And between the spend and that general sense of momentum about the club that has done this before, learned some lessons from it and come back again, I'm trying to make the case in my own head for it, so it's to be the team that stays up. Yeah, I've put them 17. Do you get Sondland vibes from them? More so, more so, some good acquisitions over the summer. And to Nicky's point earlier on about the importance of good management, this could be an example of where good management could override an average squad, he could really get something out of them. And I know a lot of people who know him very well, Gary, I know him this big, very highly of him. He's not one of these guys that will just stick to, this is my philosophy, this is how I'm going to play, he will be flexible, and I think in a team that's promoted, I think you need that as well. My fear for all the promoted teams always is goal scorer. I think you need to score goals if you're coming up. Well, they brought in the big guy. They brought in Emerson, the first ever Brazilian to play for Rips, which, apart from Alan Brazill, of course, they're record signing 24 million. They've got these little guys, you know, and see so, like the only Paraguayan to actually kick the ball and the other players at the World Cup for Tawu and my Ada, so those little guys can get around Emerson, there's a sort of vibe there. Yeah, two back palm as well, my score goals for them. I'm looking at the signings now, but I think Isa Diopens, who's the other one. That's a look at Sasaluki, I think they're good signings, or will be good signings if they can stay fit. My concern for Rips, which is, they also brought in Abdel for Tawu, who is looking to avoid his thorough consecutive relegation, and they have Daro Shae, who has been relegated three times with three different teams in the last five seasons. So, you know, get those Jonas out of here. But I have them 19th, and I think maybe I... They might actually be better than 19th, but I'll stick with 9th. No, I mean, it's hard, isn't it? Because, you know, it's hard to come into the Premier League. I've got them 17th, Nicky. I put them all the way up in 16th, about yeah. 17th as well. Leeds United, then, under Daniel Farca, have bought in James Trafford for a club where I called 40 million in goal. I sent him back from Saswolo, called Tarrick Muharamovic, at Niko Elvady, as another center back coming from mentioned Gladbach, and Harry Wilson has come in, which I learned last night. Joe Gellhart, Jack Harrison, Max Boba, Karl Darlo, and Pascal Strike have gone. They begin at Forrest, then home to Brentford, away to Brighton, home to Newcastle, home to Palace. Jordan, they're like... Recruitment last season was, get big lads, and they've got some other big lads, you know, Trafford, I mean, keep it slightly different, but Muharamovic and Elvady are pretty big as well. And then Harry Wilson, I think it's a really good time. And they did him early as well in the summer, as well, I think it's a very good bit of business. I think he's going to have a very good season this year, and I think a lot of the teams are going to be competing in the part of the table, have European football, and they don't, which I think could massively... Real nodding. Yeah, really great. I know I'm really weird to end on this side. I think I think I have a really good year. I liked how their second half of the season went. There was that, people took game against Manchester City, I think it was... Was it a home? Away. They were losing, and they changed formation. That's right. And I think from then they could just, they kicked on. Also, I'm banking on them doing well, but I've got some of their attackers, Nonto, Kafforo, Namitsha, and Kavit Lumin. If they can keep all those guys fit, there's a lot of goals there. It's a big if. Sure. But if they can keep those guys fit, I think he's going to have a really good season. And Harry Wilson behind them, yeah. Ten goals last season. Seven assists as well. Muharamovic, the defender they signed from Saswolo, I think he's really, really good player. And he was another of these, Juventus next-gen players. He, for some reason, they let go too easily, and then he had a great season at Saswolo, and I think he was one of the steals of the summer, honestly. I think he's going to be a player destined for more big things. I think he's a really great defender. Had a whole rap song dedicated to him at Saswolo. Muharamovic. Would you like to do it for us? No, it's all for good. And see the first player in Premier League history to have all five vowels in his tournament. Yeah. I mean, let me just open my database. Open my database. It's a good question, and I don't know the answer. Yeah, I don't know either. I probably should do this. Let's see, yes. No, I've got to see. Listeners can do some work for the weekly at the Guardian.com. Yeah. Well, I've got them 13th, but what about you, Bows, before these guys put them into Europe? I understand the optimism around them. I'm not convinced they'll be as brilliant as everyone. There are a lot of people seem to think, but I think they'll be fine. I have them 15th. I've got them all open 7th. 7th. Wow. Wow. That'll be interesting. All right, that'll do for part one. Part two will begin with Liverpool. Welcome to part two of the Guardian Football Weekly. So Liverpool then managed by Andoni Eriola from Bournemouth. They bought in Jeremy's Jacque, Avicta Munoz, and Ronald Arralho. Obviously, no salad. No canata, no Andy Robertson. A lot of experience leaving there. Again at Newcastle, then home to Forrest, a way to whip switch, home to full and a way to Bournemouth. So not an unpleasant start. They came 5th last year. It looks so interesting, Nicky, to see. Is one of those complete unknowables, below Arsenal, of these sides that could challenge, or it could be really par going? It's really a tough one, because I think so highly of Eriola, and I think that the project may well, if he's given the time, have legs. But at the moment, when I look at what's happened this summer, I don't feel hugely confident about it. It feels like they've said goodbye to some pretty big players. Obviously, Salarba, but also Andy Robertson, canata. It feels like the squad has not addressed positions of weakness at full back in particular. It just feels like there's a lot of questions still, when I look at this team and ask, where's the depth, where's the stability, and some of the signings, I mean, Arralho is a really interesting signing, a fascinating signing, because of course, he was catching a Barcelona, took that break in the middle of last season, and didn't start a lot of games afterwards, and is he, at his best version of himself, without, it's a really difficult thing to even talk about, because I don't want to speculate, at all, about a guy's personal situation, of course, and to take that break. But you still, purely in a footballing sense, just wonder, is he, is he where he needs to be to play at the levels he's capable of? Because he's capable of very good levels. And then the defence, and Jamie Jacque, who, 60 to even, I mean, Euros, I think it was, obviously, a play they think very highly of. But you've got Van Dyke, he's getting older. You've got Giovanni Leone, this kid they signed from, from Parama, who's been injured, basically, the entire time, since he's been there. It just feels a bit, all uncertain, and maybe Arralho is good enough to bring it together, but I just think it might take a minute. Sure. I hear the notoriously slow starter. I mean, you do think Barry, even though they were signed last year, it's like, it's almost like the first season for Isaac Vits, Frimpon Kirk is, those guys, and if they can, have a better second season, and lots of players do, that could be a good idea. Yeah, I, I have faith in Florian Vert, a lot of people don't, and I can understand their residents, but I think he will be a fine player for Liverpool, Isaac, obviously, his season was ruined, but by injury, we know he's a good player, and Kirk has been reunited with the former manager, and you talk about Eureola's slow start. I mean, the football Liverpool player were playing last season, was slow, ponderous side to side, fans aged with it. That's going to change under Eureola, but when he took over a Bournemouth, they didn't win any of the first ten matches, that won't be tolerated. No, that's hard to answer. Yeah. And there's no doubt in my mind he will be a success, but he has to be given time the fans have to be patient. I mean, they may well start superbly and roar out of the traps, but precedent with Eureola suggests it takes players a while to get the hang of what he wants them to do. I think they're a mess. I think they're a real mess. I think they're banking right back on, Bradley being fit, and I just don't see that happening. Van Dyke is a year old, as we mentioned, they have a replaced seller on the right. Isaac, let's see how he comes back, but I have concerns about whether he can manage being the main man at a team, the size of the Liverpool Football Club. Floring versus a crazy good talent, but I just worry about the physical demands of this league on someone like him. I think he might get swallowed up. I think there's real issues in that, in that squad. I think it's the right manager with the wrong squad, and I take Barry's point about how he wants to play. I don't think he's got the players to play that way. I don't think the fans were turning him quickly, because they took a while to turn on Slot, and the fans don't like turning on their manager. That's not how to, you know, title or anything. He did, you know. True. I don't think there'll be any rush to kind of get him out if it goes poorly quickly, but I think we're going to finish low than a lot of people think. Right. I mean, I've put them fifth. I've got the... six. Okay. I feel like Jordan and I cop in each other's home, like I put them sixth as well. Six, four. Fourth? Okay. I didn't play in the World Cup, so he should be free. He was like brilliant last year, wasn't he? But yeah, there's just so much unknown. And then we go to Manchester City under Enzyme Moreska. Boranelia Anderson. Jeremy Monger as well. Matthias Ditto Bay. Players will come in. You know, we're... There is a possibility of more happening. Acay Stones, Bernardo, Roderie, all leaving. A lot of experience there. Bournemouth at home. Palace away. Commentary at home. Many night away. They came second last year. Did Winnie FA Cup and The League Cup? We talked about it a bit on Monday, because we had the community shield. But Barry, again, it's just impossible to know how this will go. Yeah, I... I feel it won't go particularly well from Moreska, because I think just being the guy that takes over from the guy is too hard. And that was my opinion before the community shield. I'm not going to read too much into the community shield, but I was genuinely alarmed by what I saw there. If I was a city fan, I'd get it just to the curtain razor and glorified friendly, but that was worrying how bad they were. Maybe it was just a one-off. I know you discussed it yesterday. They've lost a lot of experience in Roderie, Bernardo Silver, and Stones to lesser extent Acay, and it canjee's gone as well. I think much will depend on Phil Foden, who is due a good season after two very underwhelming ones. But they still have plenty of terrific players. It looks like the Maloo Savino as well. I think Tottenham are after him, are they? Yeah. An answer for about five. He's good, thank you. Okay. But again, I... It's hard to tell. There's so much uncertainty. One of those teams has so much uncertainty surrounding them. I have them third, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were outside the top five. I agree with the difficulty predicting them. I think it's so easy to jerk our knees a bit too much after that community shield, right? Because it's still Erling Harland up front. It's still... So many were docking, right? Exactly. When you dock Foden, I mean, a hundred players behind the mural world class. They've got so much quality. But I do think what Barry was just saying, it's not just the names and the types of players that you've lost. Obviously, they really are screaming out for a rotary type. They haven't got that in the squad right now. It feels like to replace them. I don't think any answers are the same kind of player. Why are they kinging on for that? Yeah. And clearly, the transfer window isn't over. And by the time people listen to this, maybe we'll be out of date. But I do think that more... The point for me right now is, when you say goodbye to as big of an overarching figure as Pep Guardio, and not just a manager, but someone who is really defined a whole chapter to club, my next question is, so who are the leaders who are still there? Who are the people who are going to give you some continuity? And that's what I think is going to be go with those players. Who are the leaders in this city team? I don't know. Harlan, probably. And also, you know, you're the president of Seralic Sleaving, or slightly more venga, but even venga leaving like it just... There's just naturally just takes time. Yeah. But I think that's as big of a question for me as anything is, who's going to... Because it is very, very hard. Seven-toe shoes from Roscoe. It doesn't matter who it is, it's a very hard job. Who in the squad is going to pull this all together and say, listen, guys, we need to help here. We need to make this work. And maybe someone will, but I think that was the alarm bell that was ringing you for the last time. I mean, I suppose slot came in after club, and did win the link. It's possible. But even with that example, slot came in with a squad that was sure. I just don't know what I mean. It's set. There's changes here. This screams massively of, you can't have what to do. You're not my real dad. I think there's going to be massive concerns from a lot of those players. Many of whom might not have played on the pep for very long, whether it's for very long. But I think sitting here or in trouble here, I think the rotary cell is absolute insanity. I know people will say, if a player wants to leave, you can't keep him. I would be begging him. Give us one more year. You can go next summer. You can go wherever you want. You can get more money. I think it's crazy. After pep, silver, and stones have all left to let the guys, just want the World Cup and the Ballon door winner leave. And it's the kind of, the hub of everything good about your team. Go. I think it's absolute insanity. I think it's crazy. I mean, field of Anderson, who I think is overrated. And to be clear, I like him. I just think a hundred, is it 14 million? I think his double, what I think he should have been paid for him, but is what it is, I guess. I think he makes the priority, potentially, midfield, I think, is going to be very difficult. But I get the sense that they're thinking, let's build a team to win the title next season. So almost. Just get top four this year. Get, you know, a Champions League football and plan for next year. And lastly, I'm feeling further than it's a massive year. And lastly, I'm feeling further than it's a massive year. Because for people to talk about field folding as this great talent, which he is, I get Delhi Ali vibes about him. And people will talk about, I've been doing the show and talk sport years ago for co-hosts. I won't mention his name. He was saying, yeah, Delhi Ali will come back to form and be really good. Be really, really good. And I'm like, it's been four seasons. And people forget that he goes really quickly. And I really feel feel further than he's a season this year, where there's no De Bruyne announced, there's no David Silver, there's no excuse for you to not be the guy that can re-returns that form of two years ago. So I think it's a huge year for him. I think City are going to struggle a little bit this year. Where do you have them? Third. But I think, but I think there'll be a massive gap between third and the top two. Right. Okay. I mean, it sounded like you had about 15 from that. No, I've got them fourth. Third. I've got them fourth, but I wouldn't be spreading that below Liverpool, which is put sick. Sure. So I think it's up in the air. I managed it there. Michael Carrick, the manager of the Boranandre Santos from Chelsea Centre Miduri, and I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air. I think it's up in the air.
