Saudi Pro League 2026 — World Football's New Power
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has spent over £1 billion acquiring top stars since 2022. Three years into the grand experiment — what has it changed, what has it failed to achieve, and is the product improving?
The PIF Takeover — How Saudi Football Was Engineered
The Saudi Pro League's transformation did not happen organically. In June 2022, the Saudi government's Public Investment Fund — the same sovereign wealth vehicle that owns stakes in Uber, Lucid Motors and a swathe of global real estate — acquired majority control of four of Saudi Arabia's biggest clubs: Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, Al Hilal and Al Ahli. Overnight, these clubs gained access to essentially unlimited transfer budgets, with the SPL's governing body acting as coordinator to ensure the biggest signings were distributed across all four rather than one club monopolising the talent.
The first mega-signing was Cristiano Ronaldo to Al Nassr in January 2023. His reported annual salary of £175 million — paid partly through commercial and tourism deals with Saudi state entities — was immediately mocked in European football circles. By the summer of 2023, the mockery had quietened: Karim Benzema signed for Al Ittihad from Real Madrid for a reported £430m package over three years. Neymar followed to Al Hilal. Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Roberto Firmino and a wave of Premier League and La Liga players followed.
The criticism from European clubs was loudest because it was economically self-interested: the SPL was paying wages that inflated market rates across global football. A central midfielder worth £40m in the Premier League could now demand Saudi interest as a negotiating lever, pushing wages up even for players who had no intention of moving to Riyadh. Football agents quickly identified Saudi bids as a tool for extracting contract extensions from reluctant clubs.
Ronaldo, Benzema, Neymar — The Star Era Assessed
Three years on, the verdicts on the Saudi golden generation are mixed. Ronaldo has continued to score prolifically — his goal-per-game ratio at Al Nassr remains outstanding by any statistical measure and he has twice won the SPL Golden Boot. Whether this reflects genuine quality or inflated numbers against lower-level opposition is a debate that divides analysts. His matches against Al Ittihad and Al Hilal — the Saudi Derby equivalent — draw television audiences across the Middle East that rival mid-tier European league games.
Benzema's spell at Al Ittihad was more troubled. Injuries blighted his first season, and he made only 14 appearances before a contractual dispute that was widely reported but never fully confirmed. He departed Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2025, ending the experiment on ambiguous terms. Neymar's time at Al Hilal was ended prematurely by a catastrophic knee injury sustained in his first Brazil international after signing — he played just five SPL matches before returning to Brazil.
The more nuanced success stories have come from players like Rúben Neves and Marcelo Brozovic, who arrived with points left to prove and delivered consistent performances in a physically demanding league. Henderson and Fabinho faced withering criticism — primarily from English media — for the perception that they were betraying high-minded principles around sportswashing by accepting Saudi wages. Both departed within 12 months, arguably vindicating those who said the league was not yet at the level to satisfy players still in their prime.
Is the Product Actually Improving?
In 2026, the Saudi Pro League has a genuinely improved product compared to 2022. Average stadium attendances for the four PIF clubs have risen significantly — Al Hilal regularly fills its 47,000-capacity Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium, and the SPL's domestic broadcast deal has been renegotiated at a substantially higher value. International rights have been sold to broadcasters in over 60 countries, compared to virtually none in 2021.
The infrastructure investment is visible: training facilities at the PIF clubs now rival Bundesliga and Premier League standards, with multi-pitch complexes, sports science departments and youth academies receiving proper funding for the first time. Saudi youth international representation at AFC tournaments has improved — a direct consequence of better coaching infrastructure trickle-down.
The sportswashing criticism remains substantive and is not going away. Saudi Arabia's human rights record, its treatment of migrant workers and restrictions on women's and LGBTQ+ rights are documented and widely reported. The SPL's growth strategy is explicitly tied to Vision 2030 — Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's programme to diversify the kingdom's economy and, critics argue, launder its international reputation through sport. For European fans, the league's existence as a talent drain is unwelcome; for the global football economy, the wages it pays have changed the transfer market permanently.
