World Cup 2026 Opening Ceremony
The most-watched sporting event on earth begins with a spectacular opening ceremony. Here is everything you need to know about the date, venue, performers and show schedule before the first ball is kicked.
Ceremony Overview
Date & Time
The FIFA World Cup 2026 Opening Ceremony is expected to take place on 11 June 2026, immediately before the opening match. FIFA traditionally schedules the ceremony on the same day as the opening game, giving billions of viewers worldwide a seamless entertainment experience before the first kick-off. Exact start time will be confirmed by FIFA in the lead-up to the tournament.
Host Venue
The Opening Ceremony is expected to be staged at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles/Inglewood, California — one of the most modern sports venues in the world with a capacity of 70,000 and an iconic translucent roof. Los Angeles is a global entertainment capital, making it the ideal stage for an opening ceremony that FIFA will want to rival any Super Bowl halftime show.
What to Expect
Music & Performances
FIFA traditionally partners with major music acts for the opening ceremony. The 2026 edition — held in the USA — is expected to draw on American and Latin music talent to reflect the tri-nation hosting and the global audience. An official anthem was composed for each of the last four World Cups.
Flag Bearer Ceremony
Each of the 48 competing nations will be represented in the parade of nations. Captains or nominated players carry their national flags into the stadium, echoing the Olympic tradition. The ceremony typically features a dazzling light show, fireworks and a cultural showcase reflecting the host nations.
Visual Spectacle
The 2022 Qatar ceremony set a high benchmark with laser projections, drone shows and cultural performances. In 2026, with the resources of three nations and the world's biggest entertainment industry in Los Angeles, the visual production is expected to be on a completely different scale.
Cultural Representation
With three host nations — the USA, Mexico and Canada — the ceremony is expected to weave together North American cultural threads: indigenous traditions, Latino heritage, and the diverse immigrant cultures that define modern North America. The mascot, Cisco (a North American mountain lion), will play a central role.
The Opening Match
The opening match is expected to feature a host nation — likely the USA — against a group opponent to maximise the spectacle and home crowd atmosphere. FIFA has historically given host nations the honour of playing the very first game. The match follows immediately after the ceremony.
Thousands of fans without ceremony tickets will still be able to watch the opening game inside SoFi Stadium, while millions more tune in globally across broadcast partners including Fox Sports, BBC, ITV, and equivalents in 200+ countries.
