Rodri 2025-26
In 2024, Rodri won the Ballon d'Or — and few argued. The Manchester City midfielder had been the heartbeat of one of the greatest club sides in history, and his performances in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph were simply sublime. Then came the ACL injury that robbed him of much of 2024-25. Now, with the World Cup approaching, Rodri's return to full fitness is one of the most important storylines in world football — for City, for Spain, for everyone.
The Rodri Story
Ballon d'Or 2024: The Most Deserving Winner in Years
When Rodri lifted the 2024 Ballon d'Or, it was met with near-universal acclaim — a rare consensus in a sport notorious for its debates. His case was overwhelming. He had been the controlling force behind Manchester City's greatest era, a four-time Premier League winner whose influence extended far beyond interceptions and tackles. His passing range, positional intelligence and ability to slow or accelerate play made him the closest modern analogue to the great holding midfielders of the previous generation. At Euro 2024, he was Spain's best player in their triumphant campaign. The Ballon d'Or was simply confirmation of what the football world already knew.
The ACL Injury: A Race Against Time for the World Cup
Rodri's ACL injury in late 2024 sent shockwaves through both Manchester City and the Spanish national team. City's form without him collapsed dramatically, underlining just how central he is to Guardiola's system. The race to return for the 2026 World Cup — held in the United States, Canada and Mexico — became one of the most-watched rehabilitation stories in football. His return to fitness in 2025-26 is being monitored by fans across two continents. Spain without Rodri is a different, lesser team. Spain with him — even at 80% — is among the tournament favourites.
Rodri and City: The Perfect Partnership
Pep Guardiola has managed some of the greatest midfielders who have ever lived. He coached Xavi and Andres Iniesta at Barcelona. He had Sergio Busquets in his prime. At City he worked with David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne. Yet Rodri stands apart for how completely he embodies Guardiola's footballing philosophy — control, press-resistance, structure, verticality. The pair have forged one of the most successful manager-player relationships in football history. In 2025-26, with Rodri returning, City dare to believe they can challenge again.
