Folarin Balogun
Born in New York, raised in London, trained at Arsenal — Folarin Balogun's choice to represent the United States over England was one of the most consequential decisions in recent American soccer history. His class and clinical finishing could define USMNT's 2026.
The Decision That Changed Everything
Folarin Balogun's decision to commit to the United States national team over England in 2023 was one of the most significant moments in recent USMNT history. Born in Brooklyn but raised in south London and developed through Arsenal's academy, Balogun had represented England at youth level and appeared on track to compete for an England senior call-up.
His decision to switch to the USA — for which he qualified through his American birth — sparked significant debate in both countries. For American soccer fans, it represented a landmark: a player of genuine Premier League pedigree, developed by one of England's elite clubs, choosing to represent the USMNT at the biggest tournament in history.
The choice made sense strategically. The USA's wealth of attacking talent means fierce competition at the top; but a player of Balogun's quality was always going to be central to Pochettino's plans. His technical sophistication — the product of Arsenal's academy system — brings something qualitatively different to the USMNT attack.
Key Themes
Arsenal Pedigree
Balogun's development at Arsenal's famous Hale End academy gave him the technical foundation that distinguishes him from more physically imposing forwards. His movement, first touch and understanding of space reflect the Arteta era's emphasis on intelligent football. His record loan season at Reims in Ligue 1 (22 goals) demonstrated his ability to deliver at a high level away from north London.
Monaco Career
Balogun's transfer to Monaco provided the sustained European first-team experience he needed to realise his potential. The Ligue 1 environment, with its technical demands and competitive intensity, has sharpened his game significantly. Monaco's tradition of developing young attacking talent — Mbappe, Henry — provides an ideal environment for his continued growth.
Partnership with Pepi
Whether deployed alongside Ricardo Pepi or competing for the same role, Balogun's relationship with America's other top striker will shape USMNT's World Cup options. The two forwards offer complementary qualities: Balogun's guile and technical precision complement Pepi's power and pressing intensity — together they could give Pochettino flexibility to adapt tactically as the tournament progresses.
