The Opening Ceremony & First Kick-Off
The Azteca has hosted two previous World Cup finals — 1970 and 1986. Brazil beat Italy in 1970 and Argentina famously defeated West Germany in 1986. No other stadium has hosted two World Cup finals. Now it hosts the 2026 curtain-raiser.

History at the Azteca
The Estadio Azteca is home to football's most legendary moments — Diego Maradona's Hand of God and Goal of the Century both happened here in 1986. Pelé lifted the trophy here in 1970. No other ground carries that weight of history for the World Cup.
The Expanded 2026 Format
For the first time, 48 nations compete at a World Cup. The group stage is bigger, the knockout rounds more dramatic. The 2026 tournament runs across 16 host cities in USA, Canada and Mexico — with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 19.
Opening Game Curse?
Host nations in the opening game carry enormous pressure. Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018, Qatar in 2022 — all stumbled at various points. USA under Gregg Berhalter's replacement will need to deliver on home soil. The pressure of an opening game at a packed Azteca is enormous.
