Scott McTominay 2025-26
He was a Manchester United academy product who never quite fulfilled his potential in England. Then he moved to Napoli in summer 2024 and became one of Serie A’s most important players almost overnight. McTominay’s box-to-box energy, his goals from midfield, and his sheer will to win made him an instant favourite at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona — and the skipper of Scotland’s national team.
The McTominay Story
From Old Trafford to San Paolo
Scott McTominay spent his entire senior career to 2024 at Manchester United, coming through the academy, making over 250 appearances, and becoming a fan favourite through sheer determination. But Serie A called in summer 2024, and Napoli’s €30m investment in the Scotland captain proved to be an inspired piece of business. Within months of arriving in Naples, McTominay had scored crucial goals and established himself as the heartbeat of Antonio Conte’s midfield.
Scotland’s Most Important Player
McTominay is not merely Scotland’s best player — he is the nation’s most important footballer in a generation. His goals in EURO 2024 qualifying breathed life into Steve Clarke’s side at crucial moments. As captain, he leads by example: work rate, leadership, goals from midfield. Playing regularly in Serie A at a high level has only sharpened his performances for the national team, and Scotland hopes he can inspire them to future tournament qualification.
The Box-to-Box Engine
What makes McTominay so valuable is his combination of defensive reliability and attacking contribution. He covers enormous ground, wins second balls, breaks up attacks — and then arrives late into the box to score goals that seem to defy his defensive-minded role. At Napoli, Antonio Conte has given him licence to express himself: to be the box-to-box midfielder he always had the potential to become, rather than being restricted to a purely defensive brief.
