Ollie Watkins 2025-26
Dortmund, 90th minute, Netherlands 1-1 England. The ball drops to Ollie Watkins, who had been on the pitch for less than five minutes. One touch, one finish, and England were in the final of Euro 2024. That moment encapsulated everything about Watkins — his composure under the ultimate pressure, his instinct in the box, and his ability to deliver when the stage is biggest. At Aston Villa under Unai Emery, he has been the perfect forward: hard-working, intelligent, lethal. World Cup 2026 is next.
The Ollie Watkins Story
The Euro 2024 Hero: Semifinal Winner off the Bench
There are moments in football that define careers, and Ollie Watkins has already had his. Germany, Euro 2024 semifinal. England trailing Netherlands with minutes to go. Gareth Southgate turns to his bench and sends on Watkins. Less than five minutes later, Cole Palmer lays off a ball and Watkins, with the neatest of finishes into the far corner, sends England to a final they had not reached since 1966. The composure. The technique. The timing. One of the great substitute cameos in tournament football history — and it was only the beginning.
Unai Emery’s Secret Weapon at Villa
Emery’s arrival at Aston Villa coincided with Watkins discovering his best form. The Spanish manager recognised in Watkins a striker who could be more than a goalscorer — a pressing trigger, a reference point, a player who could make the system work from the front. Watkins’ work rate off the ball is exceptional; his ability to hold up possession and bring teammates into play elevates those around him. Villa’s Champions League qualification in 2023-24 was built on the platform Watkins created with 27 goals and assists in all competitions.
Why Harry Kane’s Shadow Matters for World Cup 2026
The central question surrounding England’s World Cup 2026 campaign is whether Harry Kane — still the nation’s record scorer — can be displaced by Watkins as the starting centre-forward. Kane’s goals at Bayern Munich remain prolific, but Watkins brings movement, pressing intensity, and a dynamism that Kane no longer offers at the highest level. The debate is respectful but genuine. England are heading to North America with Kane as captain and Watkins as perhaps the most dangerous player they have — and the manager may have to choose.
