FC Nantes 2025-26
The yellow and green of Nantes have been part of French football’s fabric since 1943. Eight Ligue 1 titles, a Coupe de France, and a playing style at their peak that made the world take notice — the jeu à la nantaise, a fluid passing game decades ahead of its time. The Stade de la Beaujoire may have quietened since those golden decades, but FC Nantes remains a club with genuine football soul and a fanbase that has never stopped believing.
The FC Nantes Story 2025-26
Le Jeu à la Nantaise: Football’s Most Beautiful Philosophy
The concept of jeu à la nantaise was developed by coach José Arribas in the 1960s — a total football philosophy emphasising short passing, movement, and collective intelligence that predated the Dutch model by a decade. At its peak under Miroslav Blažević and then Jean-Claude Suaudeau, Nantes produced football that was genuinely ahead of its time: fluid, unpredictable, joyful. It won them five league titles in a generation and inspired a generation of French football thinkers.
Les Canaris: The Yellow-Green Identity
The canary yellow and Loire green of FC Nantes is one of French football’s most distinctive colour combinations. It represents a club rooted in its city — a port city with industrial heritage and genuine civic pride. Nantes supporters have seen triumph and near-extinction in equal measure, including a near-bankruptcy in the early 2000s that almost ended the club. The survival and subsequent return to the top flight is a testament to what loyal supporters can achieve when properly motivated.
The Sala Legacy and Renewed Ambition
Emiliano Sala’s tragic death in 2019 — en route to join Cardiff City after a €17M sale — cast a shadow over Nantes that the club has worked hard to honour through continued improvement. A Coupe de France triumph in 2021-22 provided a release of emotion and proved the club could still produce special moments. With Waldemar Kita’s ownership controversial but the squad developing under clear tactical direction, Nantes aim to recapture mid-table Ligue 1 stability and occasional European runs.
