La Liga 2025-26
Season Review
The eternal battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona. The rise of Atletico. Sevilla rebuilding. Another dramatic relegation fight at the bottom. Spain's top flight never stops delivering — here is the full story of La Liga 2025-26.
The Title Race — Madrid vs Barcelona
La Liga's defining story is always the same: can anyone end Real Madrid's dominance, and can Barcelona rediscover the form that made them back-to-back champions under Xavi? The 2025-26 season followed the same dramatic pattern — two giants pulling away from the field, every El Clásico acting as a potential title-deciding moment.
Madrid enter every La Liga season as the reference point. Their squad depth — Vinicius, Bellingham, Mbappé, and a revamped defence — gives them the tools to rotate without losing quality. Even in difficult European campaigns, they find a way to win points on weekends when it matters.
- • World-class front three with interchangeable roles
- • Experience of title-race pressure at every position
- • Bernabéu fortress advantage in must-win home games
Barcelona's 2025-26 squad is built around a core of Yamal, Pedri, Gavi, and emerging talents from La Masia. Financial constraints required squad creativity — but the football philosophy remains intact. Under Flick or his successor, Barça play with pace, intensity, and technical precision.
- • Lamine Yamal — one of Europe's most dangerous young wingers
- • Strong home record at the Estadi Olímpic (while Spotify Camp Nou rebuilt)
- • Tactical flexibility from midfield to attack
Diego Simeone's Atlético remain the most reliable disruption to the Madrid-Barça duopoly. Their defensive discipline, set-piece threat, and ability to grind results on big occasions means that in any year where the top two stumble, Atlético are ready to pounce on the title.
La Liga 2025-26 Top Scorers
La Liga has historically produced some of world football's most prolific goal scorers. Since Ronaldo and Messi's era of 50+ goal seasons, the competition for the Pichichi award — the trophy for the division's top scorer — has been fiercely contested among a wider pool of top-class forwards.
Relegation Battle 2025-26
While the top of La Liga generates headlines, the bottom three positions are where the human drama is at its most intense. Clubs with generations of history have survived relegation battles in recent years — and 2025-26 is no different. Three clubs will drop to the Segunda División when the season concludes.
Automatic relegation. No playoff, no second chance — finish in the bottom three and you're down to the Segunda División.
Automatic relegation. Historically, the 19th-placed team is confirmed down with 4-6 weeks remaining when the gap becomes insurmountable.
Automatic relegation. Finishing last means the longest rebuild from a new division — lower TV money, smaller squad, and the challenge of rebuilding over multiple seasons.
The 2025-26 relegation fight saw several mid-table clubs dragged into danger by poor winter form. The final two months of the season produced the classic last-gasp survival heroics that La Liga regularly delivers — late goals, dramatic turnarounds, and confirmed relegation with the very last matches of the campaign.
European Qualification Races
La Liga's UEFA coefficient is among the highest in Europe, guaranteeing multiple spots in the Champions League and Europa League. The fight for fourth place — the final Champions League berth — regularly produces one of the most intense sub-plots of the season.
Champions League Places (Top 4)
- • 1st & 2nd — automatic UCL group-phase seeding
- • 3rd & 4th — UCL entry, may face league-phase qualification depending on coefficient
- • The battle for 4th typically goes to the final day in La Liga
Europa League & Conference League
- • 5th & 6th — Europa League group stage
- • 7th — UEFA Conference League qualification
- • Copa del Rey winner may also receive a European berth depending on league finish
