Julián Álvarez 2025-26
World Cup winner. Premier League champion. Now La Liga contender. Julián Álvarez’s career trajectory is nothing short of extraordinary. Nicknamed “La Araña” (The Spider) for his ability to weave through defences, the Argentine left Manchester City for Atletico Madrid in summer 2024 in a €75m move that has sent shockwaves through Spanish football.
The Álvarez Story
World Cup Hero — Qatar 2022
Álvarez scored four goals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, including a stunning solo effort against Croatia in the semi-final that sent the football world into a frenzy. Playing alongside Lionel Messi in Argentina’s historic title-winning campaign, La Araña proved he could perform on the biggest stage in the sport. That performance announced him to global audiences in a way his club form alone never could.
Man City to Atletico: The €75m Move
Life at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola was successful — 36 goals in all competitions — but playing time was a constant battle with Haaland and others competing for positions. When Diego Simeone came calling with Atletico Madrid’s €75m offer in summer 2024, Álvarez chose the new challenge. In Madrid, he is the focal point of the attack, given freedom to lead the line in Simeone’s relentless system.
“La Araña” — Why the Name Fits
The nickname “La Araña” captures everything about Álvarez’s playing style. Like a spider, he is patient, intelligent and deadly. He weaves through the lines, appearing in dangerous spaces where defenders least expect him. His intelligent movement pulls centre-backs out of position, creates gaps for teammates and always finds ways to contribute to goals. At Atletico, that intelligence is the perfect complement to Simeone’s collective discipline.
