Mehdi Taremi — Iran's Captain and Talisman

9

Mehdi Taremi

Inter Milan | Striker | Captain | Age: 32

Mehdi Taremi is the most accomplished Iranian footballer playing in Europe today. After establishing himself as one of the Primeira Liga's most clinical strikers at Porto — where he scored 100+ goals and became famous for an audacious bicycle kick in the Champions League — he earned a dream free transfer to Inter Milan in the summer of 2024.

At Inter, Taremi has adapted to the demands of Serie A and the Champions League while maintaining the scoring touch that made him one of Europe's most underrated strikers. His technical ability, aerial dominance and willingness to track back make him the complete modern centre-forward. For Iran, he is captain, leader and the focal point of every attacking move.

At 32, World Cup 2026 is likely his final major tournament. His career trajectory — from Iranian domestic football to Porto to Inter Milan — represents one of the great journeys in contemporary football. Iran need goals at WC2026, and Taremi is the man they rely on to deliver them.

Sardar Azmoun — The Iranian Messi

11

Sardar Azmoun

AS Roma (Serie A) | Striker/Second Striker | Age: 29

Nicknamed "the Iranian Messi" — a label that captures his graceful technique rather than a direct comparison — Sardar Azmoun has carved out a remarkable career across multiple top European leagues. After breaking through at Rubin Kazan and Zenit St Petersburg, where he won multiple Russian Premier League titles, Azmoun moved to Bayer Leverkusen and eventually Roma.

His combination of pace, technical finesse and intelligent movement make him the perfect partner for Taremi. While Taremi holds the line and draws defenders, Azmoun exploits the space with incisive runs. Together they form one of Asia's most dangerous striking partnerships and give Iran a real threat at the 2026 World Cup.

Key Players

Goalkeepers

Alireza Beiranvand
Persepolis FC | GK | Age: 31

One of the most powerful goalkeepers in Asian football with a remarkable story — he grew up homeless and sleeping in a park before becoming Iran's first-choice keeper. Known for his extraordinary long kick, which was once measured as one of the longest goal kicks in football history. His shot-stopping at set pieces is exceptional.

Amir Abedzadeh
Persepolis FC | GK | Age: 29

The backup goalkeeper who has experience in European football after spells in Portugal. Technically accomplished and a reliable option should Beiranvand be unavailable. His reflexes and command of the area make him a credible challenger for the starting position.

Defenders

Ramin Rezaeian
Al-Qadsiah | RB | Age: 34

Iran's experienced right-back who has been a senior squad regular for over a decade. Rezaeian brings international pedigree and defensive reliability on the flank. His experience across multiple World Cups makes him a stabilising presence in the back line.

Shoja Khalilzadeh
Esteghlal FC | CB | Age: 33

A no-nonsense centre-back who is among the most capped Iranian defenders of his generation. Dominant in the air and strong in the tackle, Khalilzadeh organises Iran's backline from the centre and is trusted in the biggest games.

Majid Hosseini
Trabzonspor (Süper Lig) | CB | Age: 26

The most exciting young defender in the Iranian squad. Hosseini made his mark in Turkish football with his composed defending and ability on the ball. His pace and reading of the game make him a modern centre-back who can cover ground quickly and play out from the back.

Midfielders

Saman Ghoddos
Brentford (Premier League) | AM/Winger | Age: 30

One of the few Iranian players performing consistently in England's Premier League. Ghoddos provides creativity and direct running from wide positions for Brentford, and brings that Premier League tempo and quality to the Iran setup. A key creative outlet in the final third.

Saeid Ezatolahi
Cadiz CF (La Liga) | DM/CM | Age: 27

Iran's midfield anchor and a technically gifted defensive midfielder who combines hard work with quality on the ball. Ezatolahi's performances in Spain have underlined his quality as a European-level player. He screens the defence and starts attacks from deep.

Ali Gholizadeh
Charleroi / Belgian Pro League | Winger | Age: 27

A pacey winger who has been a consistent performer for Iran from the right flank. Gholizadeh's direct running and ability to beat defenders in one-on-one situations provide Iran with width and a different threat from Azmoun's more central play.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh
Feyenoord (Eredivisie) | Winger/FW | Age: 30

A versatile attacker who has had a long career across Europe, including spells at AZ Alkmaar, Brighton and Feyenoord. Jahanbakhsh's dribbling ability and set-piece delivery make him a useful option from the right flank. He adds veteran experience to Iran's attacking options.

Iran's World Cup History

2018 — Group Stage

Russia 2018 saw Iran produce one of their strongest group stage campaigns. They held Portugal to a draw in a dramatic final group game and beat Morocco 1-0. Qualification was agonisingly close as they finished third. Queiroz's defensive organisation made them difficult to beat.

2022 — Group Stage

Qatar 2022 delivered Iran's finest World Cup moments in decades. They beat Wales 2-0 with two late goals and sensationally defeated the United States 1-0 in a politically charged match. They ultimately missed out on the Round of 16, finishing third behind England and USA on goal difference.

1978 — First Appearance

Iran made their World Cup debut in Argentina 1978, drawing with Scotland 1-1 in one of the tournament's memorable upsets. It was the beginning of Iran's World Cup story — a country that has qualified consistently since their return in 1998 and continues to grow in stature at each tournament.

Coaching Legacy

The Queiroz Era

Carlos Queiroz's two spells as Iran manager (2011–2019 and returning later) transformed Team Melli into one of Asia's most organised and tactically disciplined sides. The Portuguese coach — formerly Manchester United's assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson — brought European professionalism to Iranian football and made them genuinely hard to beat.

His 4-5-1 defensive system, built around hard work and set-piece threat, became synonymous with Iran. The results were consistent: qualification for consecutive World Cups, wins against top Asian opposition and competitive performances against much stronger nations on the global stage.

Iran's current management setup continues Queiroz's legacy of defensive organisation while attempting to give players like Taremi and Azmoun more freedom to express their attacking quality at the 2026 tournament.

AFC Qualifying Campaign

Iran are one of Asia's most reliable World Cup qualifiers. The AFC third-round format for 2026 qualifying grouped the top Asian nations together, and Iran navigated the campaign with characteristic defensive efficiency and contributions from Taremi and Azmoun in attack.

The expanded format — with 8.5 AFC spots for the 48-team tournament — gives Iran greater comfort in qualification. They have now qualified for their fourth consecutive World Cup, a remarkable achievement that reflects the strength of Iranian football infrastructure.

Iran's key strength remains AFC qualifying performances. They are typically the second strongest side in Asia behind Japan and ahead of South Korea, Australia and Saudi Arabia.

WC2026 Expectations

The Round of 16 is Iran's realistic target at World Cup 2026. With the expanded 48-team format ensuring 32 qualifiers from the group stage, a team of Iran's quality should advance comfortably. The real question is whether Taremi and Azmoun can produce their club form on the biggest stage.

The 2022 World Cup — where Iran beat both Wales and the USA before missing out on goal difference — showed the level Team Melli can reach when performing at their best. The difference in 2026 is that Taremi now plays for Inter Milan, giving him Champions League exposure that should sharpen him for the tournament's demands.
