Gabriel Magalhães 2025-26
When Arsenal signed Gabriel Magalhães from Lille for £27m in 2020, it looked like smart recruitment. What followed exceeded all expectations. The Brazilian centre-back has become the rock at the heart of Arsenal’s defence, partnering William Saliba to form one of the most dominant defensive partnerships in the Premier League. His reading of the game, aerial dominance and vocal leadership make him indispensable to Arteta’s system.
The Gabriel Story
From Lille to the Emirates
Gabriel’s journey to Arsenal began in Brazil, took him through the French lower divisions, and blossomed at Lille under Christophe Galtier. His performances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League made him one of the most sought-after centre-backs in Europe. Arsenal, competing against several top clubs, won the race for his signature in August 2020. At £27m, it has proved to be one of the Premier League era’s great defensive signings.
The Gabriel-Saliba Partnership
When William Saliba returned from his loan spell in France and established himself at Arsenal, the defensive partnership formed with Gabriel Magalhães quickly became regarded as the best in the Premier League. Their complementary qualities — Saliba’s composure and ball-playing ability, Gabriel’s aggression and aerial authority — create a defensive unit that consistently gives Arsenal a foundation to build title challenges upon. Together, they have conceded fewer goals than almost any other pairing in English football’s top flight.
Brazil’s Defensive Backbone
Brazil’s traditionally attack-minded squads have often been accused of defensive vulnerability, but Gabriel Magalhães offers something different: a centre-back who competes at the very highest level week after week in England’s most demanding league. For the 2026 World Cup, Gabriel’s experience in Premier League title races gives him a competitive edge over most other Brazilian defenders. If the Selecao are to go deep in the tournament on North American soil, Gabriel’s reliability at the back will be fundamental.
