Athletic Club Bilbao 2025-26
Only three clubs have never been relegated from La Liga — Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Club. That statistic alone tells you everything about what this club represents. Operating exclusively with Basque players under their unique cantera policy, Athletic have defied commercial logic for over a century. San Mamés — the Cathedral — is one of Europe’s great cauldrons, and a Copa del Rey in recent seasons proves the tradition of winning silverware is very much alive.
The Athletic Club Story 2025-26
San Mamés — The Cathedral That Never Sleeps
San Mamés is not just a stadium — it is a living monument to Basque football culture. The new ground, opened in 2013, preserved everything that made the original sacred while adding modern comfort and spectacle. On a European night or a Copa del Rey knockout tie, the roar from 53,000 Bilbao voices can feel elemental. The red-and-white stripes, the passion, the unyielding belief that Basque blood can compete with the world’s best — this is what San Mamés is about.
The Williams Brothers: Basque Football’s Most Electric Duo
Iñaki and Nico Williams are the jewels of Athletic’s remarkable generation. Born in Pamplona and Bilbao respectively to Ghanaian parents, both brothers chose Basque nationality and Athletic over more lucrative paths elsewhere. Iñaki is the workhorse — relentless, brave, technically gifted. Nico is the sparkplug — explosive, quick-thinking, a joy to watch at full sprint. Together they represent everything Athletic’s Basque-only policy was meant to produce.
Copa del Rey Champions: The Tradition of Winning
Athletic have won the Copa del Rey 24 times — more than any other club except Barcelona. The competition feels almost made for Athletic: knockout football, regional passion, and the possibility of one giant-killing night ending a season in glory. Ernesto Valverde’s tactical nous and the squad’s extraordinary cohesion make Athletic formidable in the cups even in seasons where La Liga points prove harder to accumulate against the traditional titans.
